The Importance Of Education

There is a famous quote by Miles Kingston that states, "knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad." Often people use the words Knowledge, Wisdom, and Education interchangeably. However, this is far from appropriate. Currently, being an educated individual does not necessarily mean that that individual is wise or knowledgeable but simply that he or she has had an "education" and therefore carries a level of status and qualification.

Education is a necessary asset as it prepares children for adult life teaching them critical thinking skills as well as providing access to knowledge about the world they live in. Education imparts life tools, developing intellect as well as personal character, largely impacting many students lives, biasing their roles and lifestyles as adults. Black children suffer from an inadequate education as a result of an issue we legally eliminated sixty years ago, race. Since whites have been given the upper hand black children struggle for equal access to quality education. Over the years white influence has caused hardships that limit blacks from access to equal education. Black children are deprived of a quality education because of the lack of choice available to them caused by the restrictions associated with their race, lowering their likelihood to succeed. Being in this predicament ignites little belief and causes profuse sacrifices, resulting in defining freedom in a country where freedom is supposedly accessible to all, rather as something that is not complimentary but must be worked for.

In an idealistic world, one’s education would not be determined by their social class or living environment. Instead, those who live in the low class outskirts of an urban industrial population to those who live in ritzy suburban homes and are part of the private school system would be learning the same values and have similar if not equal curricula. However, we as a society have not managed to make this ideal applicable. Instead we find ourselves with an education system that seems to benefit those with favourable living conditions. As discussed in Anyon’s “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work”, depending on your economic status, you may be taught to just “Follow the steps in a procedure” as per the working class schools or how to independently carry out your creative activities as found in the affluent professional school. These very different extremes have an effect on one’s future by setting you up for a life as a factory worker or as a lawyer. It is this economical and social structure that I had to overcome to get to where I am today.

America has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave since Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star Spangled Banner.” The extent of America’s global influence is unparalleled. The country that advocates freedom and justice for all does not appear to include quality of life under that umbrella. A country’s Quality of Life (QOL) is a summation of the quality of education, health care, violence, and income. Unfortunately, because the United States is a vast, diverse nation, many problems still persist. While one may argue America is the best country in the world, quality of life is not considered when making that statement. America very well may be the best country in the world; however-- it does not have the best quality of life in the world.

Education, a necessity for many people to become successful later in life. When the option for education is taken away from a person, it is more difficult to progress in a career. Many people that aren’t allowed to go to school are not executing their full potential and no one would ever know if that person would have amounted to greatness that our country needed. There are many reasons that people are not allowed to go to school, it is commonly because of sex, race or where someone’s from. That’s is why, “The only way we can fight back is to excel” an article by D. Russakoff has multiple testimonies from Dreamers that can no longer do things they were once able to do. The only way I feel like I can relate to this is where I grew up and how much harder for people to get an education.

Public education began in the nineteenth century, now the majority of people have received some sort of public education. Whether someone has received a middle school education or a college education, any education will impact someone's life. Throughout educations existence, many people have come to believe there are many flaws with its methods, which is limiting students. However, public education helps to promote students to gain educational knowledge, the knowledge someone gains will positively affect their future.

The way you grow up directly affects how successful you are in the future. Many parents can’t provide as much to their children to give them the necessities they need for school, medical care, and even the basic needs. When it comes down to it, the way a kid is taken care of shapes who they are as a person and their development in this world.

According to the book on page 363, “education is a social institution through which a society’s children are taught basic academic knowledge, learning skills, and cultural norms.” Every nation has some sort of educational system which teaches all of these thing and each system varies greatly. What affects the educational systems the most is the money that goes into supporting each system. Many factors come into the amount of money that is spent on educations. A main one is the wealth of the country that particular system is in. The countries that have little to nothing are barely able to support any kind of education, if any. This is a social concern for many countries.

Parents put their children through the educational system with the hope that their education will lead to real world success. Many skills and lessons are taught and learned in the average 12-year education that children are required to undergo. Although schools teach many subjects such as math, science, and English; many would criticize that they do not adequately prepare students for real life. Some, if not most, classes that are required during grade school teach useless life lessons that are not transferable to the real world. These classes are tested and graded by a system that is not visible in real life. All throughout a student’s education, teachers who may not care about the students, train them to pick a degree and get a job, without offering more creative life plans. This letter is being written to inform you, the school board, of the flaws in the public school’s curriculum and ways to improve them.

Why school? Throughout life, we always tend to wonder whether or not having an education is beneficial and can end up leading to a life of success. As students, we always search for the deliverance that will help us to answer this question. When we are young, we view school as a place to meet new people and a place that we go to have fun. But once we grow out of this stage, we wonder what the true reasoning behind education actually is. We as students tend to outgrow the day to day lifestyle of forcing ourselves out of bed every morning to go to a place we have no idea to interpret what we are learning and how to apply it to our lives. I was driving to an art performance on a Friday night with my eight-year-old daughter strapped in the backseat, and we were talking about where I was going once she was dropped off at her friend’s house. I explained to her that there had been several hurricanes that left the island of Puerto Rico in need of resources and help, and that the money raised at the event that night was going to will help aid the effort. Education is a very important tool you need to live a successful life, Those students who actually take advantage of the education given to them are usually the ones with the most success. The students who don’t take advantage of the education given to them are the ones working a minimum wage 9-5 job. With some students, the education they’re receiving isn’t enough, nowadays most students worry about their elective classes, sports, and after-school activities more than their common core classes. Which are Math, English, Science, and History. In order to increase student success at school all around Anaheim, students should spend more time in their common core classes, rather than spending the same amount of time in their elective classes.
