English plays a big role in politics as of today public speaking is very important. What you say and what you do gets put out nationally in the world of politics. Being a Political Science major a lot of writing goes into context of what I do in my everyday college career. Political science and English go hand in hand for example, when Politicians write speeches they have to make sure everything they say is perfect and in the right context. In this paper I will analyze why English is imperative to my future college career of Political Science and how writing assignments and certain exercises will help improve my own college experiences.
The first question people ask is what is Political Science and how important it is to me. Answering that, I always tell people that Political Science in basic context is the study of everything. Breaking it down it is the general overview of political institutions. Many things tie into this major moreover, American politics, comparative government, political theory, and law and public policy. Personally, it is very important for everyone to know what goes around in the world and for everyone to know what is going on in our government and the changes that are being made everyday.
There are so many fields one can go into with this major for instance, fields one can go into include Lawyer, Journalist, CIA/FBI Agent, Diplomat, Political Consultant, Campaign Worker, Research Analyst, Lobbyist, Government Worker, Educator, Foreign Service
Political philosophy is the attempt to understand the foundations of society that we are in today. In order to understand current political situation we have to try to read and recognize early writings on political philosophy, Some of the earlier works by Plato called "The Republic", in the piece there are conversations between characters Socrates and Glaucon, Aristophanes, Adeimantus where they try and explain ideas and views of justice and what a truly just man and/or just "state" would appear How we come to the decisions as human beings that would be for the greater good of a man and/or state.
This course also made you think for yourself, which is important in politics. Personally, what I found helpful from the course include learning about certain civic issues, and having to do research on government. In the future, these two things will be prominent in everyday life, and that is part of political thinking. Currently, as a student, political thinking is important because it questions a lot of things I have previously learned, and it helps me form a connection with political parties I agree with. For example, I always believed that suicide was a “sin” due to me being catholic, yet I learned about physician assisted suicide, and changed my opinion. Many politicians change opinions, for many reasons, and this is part of political thinking
Political science is known to be one of the most ignored sciences there are. Over the years, there has not been a demand for everyone to pay attention to politics because people always have their own opinion anyways. Ten Things Political Scientists Know that You Don’t was an article written by Hans Noel. His main objective to writing this was to inform readers of the reasons why politics is something that is important to understand. Many journalists and bloggers became more aware of politics and want to know more about what political scientists actually know. This article also wants to inform many people that political science is something that you can study over a period of time, which is the real reason to pay attention to elections. Hans Noel came up with 10 different things that political scientists know but American citizens do not.
Without a doubt, George Orwell was a visionary during his time. Having endured the period where fascism and authoritarianism as a whole was at its strongest throughout the world, it is unsurprising that he considered its menace the primary problem facing the world. Through his essay, Politics and the English Language, he attempts to express his worry that the transformation of the way in which English is used will have a direct impact on the minds of the general public. Despite the passage of time since this piece was written, his argument certainly has a number of strong points which one can clearly see in the modern era, yet it is not without its flaws.
George Orwell’s essay, Politics and the English Language, first published in 1946, talks about some “bad habits”, which have driven the English language in the wrong direction, that is, away from communicating ideas. In his essay he quotes five passages, each from a different author, which embody the faults he is talking about. He lists dying metaphors, operators, pretentious diction, and meaningless words as things to look out for in your own writing and the writing of others (593-595). He talks about political uses of the English language. Our language has become ugly and the ugliness impedes upon communication. Ugly uses of language have been reinforced and passed down in the population “even among people who should and do know
By the time I got to college, my decision to major in political science came as a surprise to absolutely no one in my life. But I knew that my major was more than just a field of study, it’s essentially a lifestyle. Studying political science requires so much more than reading textbooks and writing papers and doing quantitative analysis, at its very core it’s about how people live their lives. I knew that I would have to make concerted efforts outside of the classroom in order to truly understand the way things worked. My first effort at this was serving on the planning and zoning commission for the City of Coffeyville while attending Coffeyville Community College, which gave me a chance to understand local government at a level that most
Coming into college, I have had experience in writing analytical essays, research papers, and creative writing projects. For two years in a row I had the privilege to be taught by the same honor’s English teacher—Mr. McConahay. Mr. McConahay constantly stressed the importance of writing. He spent the past two years preparing us for college level writing because he knows that in college, writing is a big part of one’s English class. We wrote about American citizenship and what it meant to be a citizen of the world as well as a citizen of one’s community. Mr. McConahay valued structure and a good thesis the most out of anything. This writing was very difficult for me because my mind works more creatively than it does analytically. Academic writing has always been my weakest attribute when it came to schooling. I would much rather write a paper full of opinions or made up people rather than write a research paper. Though his class was hard for me, I noticed a difference in my writing as it improved over the course of the years. Mr.
Harold Dwight Lasswell, leading American political scientist or communication theorist, defined politics as “Politics is who gets what, when, and how.” Although Lasswell definition is broad, I completely agree with him on his thoughts about politics based on the lessons I’ve learned throughout, my major, Political Science. Politics is defined as the “activities associated with governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties trying to achieve power. The task of political science is composed of four parts: a concern for what is right or wrong in politics, research that leads to the task of empirical understanding, the combination of empirical studies, and prudential concerns.
My intended major to complete at the University of Wisconsin Madison is chemistry, but how could that possibly connect with international affairs? Well, my main career path is to be a forensic analyst, specialists that use science to help police investigate crimes. They collect and preserve physical evidence from crime scenes, including blood and other fluids, fingerprints, human tissue, fibers, and weapons-related evidence, such as shell casings. One would imagine that this would be a great help to the CIA, my intended career goal. To incorporate international dimensions, I would study and research conflicts going on all around the world to then keep my country and all of our country’s great leaders safe. And in addition, to participate in the humanitarian programs and missions that the CIA presents helps me come closer to my overall goal of making the world a better place, no matter how small the accomplishment. With my previous, and future, knowledge of different cultures, I will be able to better the world around me.
Though English 102 is a required course for most studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, I hoped for more than just a passing grade. As a business major, I expected to improve my writing and communication skills to better prepare myself for speeches, meetings, and group projects that I will come across during not only my college education, but my professional career as well. I realize that English is essential in my everyday life and for my college classes. English 102 helped me to recognize that it is necessary to know how to construct a well written paper that reveals a purpose to a specifically chosen audience. I have learned that to communicate adequately I must know how to support multiple academic arguments, understand that it is important to incorporate others’ ideas in my own writing, and that rethinking my own ideas, rhetorical choices, and discovering other meanings are all part of the revision process. I have chosen to revise the research essay and edit my rhetorical analysis to demonstrate that I have taken these goals into consideration and was able to provide a well written essay.
Political scientists work in a variety of organizations, such as private think tanks, lobby groups and non-profit organizations. Approximately half are employed by the federal government. They do everything from research relations to collect data to develop and test new theories. They also predict certain political and economic trends. There are four specializations for political scientists: political theory, international relations, comparative politics and American politics. According to
Description: Political scientists can do tasks ranging from researching political issues and subjects to testing theories hypothesized by their team. For such theories to be tested, a political scientist needs to collect data from various sources and be able to analyze older data from previous documents or sources. Most political scientists do not work alone as they are often hired for a company or individual who has a group in mind. Political scientists can specialize in different categories such as current events, historical analysis, and much more.
Throughout my academic career, I haven’t given writing much of a chance. Instead, I gravitated towards math and science subjects. I believed that writing wasn’t one of my strengths, which caused me to not enjoy past composition courses. This opinion changed during my writing process for “Strategic Devices,” my rhetorical analysis of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail. As I analyzed the skillfully crafted letter, I was reminded of how powerful writing can be, and, when used for good, words can transform the situation that they are spoken into. In English 121, I have learned many new aspects of writing, grown as a writer, and developed a fresh perspective towards composition. Through this progress, I hope to become a positive impact in my sphere of influence.
Political science is a broad topic that covers the history, political and geographical aspect of the world. The course started with a revision on the basics of the constitution, types of power and the political scene that happens around us. My first year at the University, one of the compulsory subject that is required for arts taking students is Political Science 1101. After several years of taking social or political course, taking this course opened my knowledge towards politics and the political scene in Canada. It also taught me about how different ways of information taking could lead to one learning differently from others. For example this class gave us the opportunity to use our laptops as a source of note taking, this helped me learn in which whenever a new vocabulary comes up during the class discussions i could search it up. Through “The Road to Patriation” and Kim Campbell “Through the Looking Glass” i would further emphasize my ideas on what i have learnt throughout the course semester.

The general areas of study in political science include American government and politics, political theory, public administration, public law, comparative politics and international relations.
