Some people do not understand what feminism is. Or they just don’t know the importance of feminism. Sadly there are women/men that don’t understand what the true meaning of feminism is and they are the people that go all out and say feminism is women over men. They have granted themselves with the internet name as a “feminazi”. There are some people that spread the message of women over men and say that they don’t support feminism, they can also be classified as sexist because women (or men but it’s mostly women) that are titled with this internet name, often mistreat men and blame everything on men. Feminism is equal rights for men and women. Feminists can be men but are often times women, and they are the people that want women to be treated equal like men. Some people as I have witnessed take that to another level and have included things such as violence to be equal for women as it is with men. We strive to have a better future for generations of women, and that includes equal pay for the same amount and quality of work that a man does, the allowance of breast feeding a child in public no longer being something that is labeled as gross because it is a natural thing, and one more thing that can change in school is pads and tampons being free at schools. I have witnessed an argument on social media about feminism. I have read stories about how men don’t know basic information about periods, I have seen men shaming women on social media for feeding their babies
From reading the summary on “Why We Still Need Feminism”, the writer used the guidelines for writing summaries but missed a few key components. The writer cited the author and title of the text but rarely used any direct quotes or paraphrasing. The summary was more objective but the writer did put their personal opinion in some areas of the summary but overall, the writer conveyed what the author was trying to express in a very factual way. The writer does use author tags throughout the summary, for example, by saying “Cavanaugh asserts” or “Casey Cavanaugh argues”. It is very clear in the summary that the writer is giving the author the credit deserved. My interpretation of the summary was interested. I was very keen to read how the writer
Most people don’t understand the basics of the idea, and the practice of feminism. Feminism is historically a multicultural cause. Today's feminist activists are women and men of all walks of life who seek to combat racism, sexism, classism, etc. Feminism doesn't just liberate women; it also liberates men by breaking down the standards which society has put in place for both women and men. Women are very much still behind men in multiple ways. Furthermore, Feminists not only believe in equality between men and women, but also in equality between every gender, class, race, and sexual
It 's unfortunate that when some people hear the term feminism, they automatically place that as a negative word and it becomes something they don 't want to be associated with. It is unfortunate that people will try to avoid it however, people will still embrace the feminist politics. As feminist scholar Susan A. Mann (2012) describes, when people refuse to identify as a feminist they create the "I 'm-not-a feminist-but" syndrome. This refers to when people understand the importance of struggles with gender issues, such that include the wage gap or domestic violence, but they will still reject the notion that it may actually mean they are a feminist if they are fighting for that cause. Feminism has a simple definition, it means that women seek gender equality through political, social, and economic gain.
Gender is one of the biggest ways we judge someone in our world today. Being a girl is typically a sign of being weak, powerless, and not as important. If a man was called a girl, it means they are being childish, or stupid about a certain situation. On the reverse, being a man comes with many expectations of power and strength as well as just being the bigger, better person. They say boys learn how to be a man from none other than his father, or a father figure none the less. People stick on stereotypes for being both a girl and a boy. Gender even depicts things like being in a rock band, or playing sports. Most girls who are in rock bands are considered childish, almost as if they are playing around and are not any good. Just like boys who do not play sports are known to be sissy and weak. The groups society puts people in do not even make sense half the time, seeing as, for example, there are many sports that are for girls rather than boys. Although gender roles do play an important part in how we treat people, we should not judge people based on their gender. Pearson writes in a way that makes gender constrict and define the characters. Stereotyping someone based on their gender is an awful way to get to know someone.
Many people are often misinformed or given bad first impressions of feminism. However, feminism is equal rights for all people of different race, sex, gender, and sexuality. Many of the people that give feminism a bad name, include a self-proclaimed feminist that is running for presidency, and meninists who are satirical equal rights activists. In reality, feminism is pro-gender equality and opportunities for all types of people.
In today’s society, it’s common to hear the word “feminism” being thrown around. Whether it’s on social media, or in regular conversation. There’s an abundance of people in the United States and abroad that call themselves feminists. Feminists claim to support “equality” and that it is in fact a movement towards women's rights. However, what started out was a woman’s movement, is now a movement that appears to put woman above men. Quite the opposite of equality, if you ask me.
For years, women have been announcing that they are feminists, but some are taking it a little too far. The definition of feminism according to oxford dictionary is “The advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes”. Sarah Miller writes that what seems to be happening in our society is that women are taking a whole new meaning for feminism. They are trying to convey that women deserve even more rights than men and that these men are somehow the enemy, even though feminists should be fighting for equal rights.
Feminism is pro-women and pro-men, and the feminist agenda includes fighting for men’s equality in regards to child custody, rape culture, toxic masculinity, parental leave and gender stereotypes. However, feminism is often incorrectly assumed to be pro-female and anti-male, but feminism is not misandry, or “the dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against men” (Merriam Webster). Feminism is the belief and movement that attempts to raise women to the same societal status as men, not to bring men down. The confusion or misinterpretation is a result of some using feminism in the wrong context or by demonizing the word itself. For example, “femininazi” is a term or slur first popularized and used since the early 1990s by Rush Limbaugh, a conservative radio talk show host (Rudman). The term, a combination of feminist and Nazi, is often used disparagingly to talk about feminists. The political technique has had a good deal of success because many people don’t identify as feminist even though their beliefs on equality align. In some instances, feminism has somewhat become a dirty word without people actually knowing its true meaning. When asked if someone is a feminist, a common response is, “No! I don’t hate men!” This public attitude is partially due to the propaganda that has twisted the meaning of feminism. This technique is just one example of how some with opposing ideologies attempt to discredit feminism, but there has been significant push back from the feminist communities to re-empower the word,
Many people have misconceptions about what feminism is. I believe that if they were to fully understand what feminism really is, with all its complexities, then everyone should be a feminist. Unfortunately, people often relate the word, feminism, with many negative connotations. For example, people will say “Feminists are radical women who believe men are inferior to them, and that their agenda is more important.” The first thing you need to know is that, feminism in its simplest definition is the want for social, economic, and political equality of the sexes.
For hundreds of years feminism woman fought for equality with men. They have been held back and their opportunities taken away from the political, and economic equality of the sexes. Woman have every right to be equal with men and feminism is what is slowly accomplishing this. It is a human right to be equal to others around you and it does not matter if you are male or female. They should both receive the same opportunities and privileges given in life and feminism helps women accomplish this task of equality. Woman should not be paid less in the workforce, or looked at as the weaker sex, or judged for what they or are how they act. And lastly woman should not be shut down for speaking their mind.
A common misconception of the movement is that feminists believe that women are better than men. However, the definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” Feminists are fighting to be granted the same rights and opportunities as men, not to be granted rights and opportunities that surpass those of men.
It is said that the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 is one of the most important events in the history of the Women’s Rights Movement because it “‘unleashed’ the struggle for women’s equality that [continued] into the twenty-first century” (McMillen). The quest for women’s equality has been a hot topic for centuries and have included millions of feminists who share the same ideals, but there have been instances where some women have taken those same ideals and turned them into something new.
Terms such as ‘menist’ and ‘meninism’ have become popularized through social media and online forums within the last few years. Theses terms denote a semi-satirical gender equality and men’s rights movement that voices concern over the way men are ‘victimized’ by modern-day feminism. Although, meninism and its association with men right activist groups (MRAs) is not typically well received within feminist circles, this movement is a part of the larger men’s liberation movement that has been ongoing since the early 1970s. Granted that this movement has been going on for some time, it has picked up steam in recent years due to the accessibility to the internet. Today, the many websites that support a menist agenda are vocal about issues related
Feminism is known for the advocacy of equal rights towards all sexes, however, today society still experiences many inequalities and stereotypes between men and women. (Kelly) From a young age, boys are dressed in blue, given toy cars to play with, and help with the yard work, meanwhile, girls are dressed in pink, play with dolls and help cook and clean. These gender rolls are assigned from a very young age, and children are taught that girls are submissive while boys are assertive. Society has categorized where the man stands in a household and the work place versus a woman, causing unequal opportunities between both sexes. Women are also highly sexualized throughout the media, making women think they need to act, dress, and look a particular way to be accepted into todays society. There is a constant battle between equality of men and
Feminism, when people hear the word, they may want to scamper as quickly and far as they possibly can. First, feminism is defined as "The belief that women are and should be treated as potential intellectual equals and social uniform to men." When I bring the word Feminism up in a discussion with my classmates, many of them want to get away from the conversation. Why is it wrong to want equal rights for all people? Feminist are not against men, feminist want the best for everyone. Saying anything else would make you misogynistic (prejudice against women.) or a misandrist (someone who is prejudice against men.) Second of all, Feminism, by its nature, embraces the belief that all people are entitled to freedom and liberty within reason, including
