As stated in a the Pew Research Center for People & the Press taken in September 2010, “Half of Americans think state and local government should be able to pass gun control laws”(“Statistics”).
Hidden carry laws tells us the practice of carrying a weapon, such as a handgun, in public in a hidden way. Currently, there is no law created by the federal government covering the problem of hidden carry permits; instead it is covered by the states. All fifty states have laws in the books allowing people that serve a specific function, educational institutions, hospitals, churches, and businesses where you can purchase alcohol. Some states allow private property to post signs forbidding concealed carry. Supporters of these “gun free zones” contend they lower the chance of criminal activity

After the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Sen. Robert Kennedy in 1968, made the gun control act more reasonable (“Timeline”). Even when a firearm is used in protecting one’s self, but it is rare, research shows that it is no more likely to lower an individual’s chance of being hurt during a moment of a crime than different other forms of protective action (“Open Carrying Policy”). In due time a University of Pennsylvania Study in the American Journal of Public Health during Oct. 2009 showed that people carrying a firearm in an assault raises the chance of getting shot by four times or more. 2 years later on July 12th the Obama administration implemented new gun measures which tells dealers in four southwestern states to disclose any sales of multiple semi-automatic weapons to the federal firearms bureau. Presently, in Dec. 19 2015, new federal data, for the first time in American history, shows that it is more likely to be shot by a firearm than to be in a traffic accident
Imagine a situation where a big event was taken place and among the many people a mass shooting breaks out killing hundreds until the police shown up 12 minutes later. Concealed carry laws save lives. To start off, it is an Americans constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense. Second, concealed carry is effective and proven to keep civilians safer. “In truth, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Chong 27).
Gun control has been a prevalent issue in the United States since its early years, but has recently taken the spotlight as one of the most controversial, and debated topics in the country with the rise of alarming cases and accessible statistics. Because of our constitution, the right to bear arms has endured throughout the years with little revision. Republicans tend to argue strongly in favor of this amendment on the basis of constitutional right and the need for self-defense. (Waldman, 2017). However, the current lax system of background checks requirements for purchase of a firearm have contributed to numerous casualties and cannot stand without reform. In 2017 alone, 13,899 deaths have occurred at the expense of a gun in the United
Some States have enacted their own laws. Florida has allowed its citizens to carry a concealed weapon. Since this law was enacted the murder rate has dropped by 29%. Over the same period of time the nationwide murder rate increased by 11%. This clearly shows that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens can prevent crime.
Each state gets to determine if they will allow concealed weapons. If the state does permit concealed carry then people have to go through a long process before they can receive their concealed weapons permit. A person must first fill out the application, then "State police post the names to a private website for local law enforcement agencies to review and object to if police feel there
Gun control laws do not deter crime; gun ownership deters crime. A Nov. 26, 2013 study found that, between 1980 and 2009, "assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level" and "states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murders." While gun ownership doubled in the twentieth century, the murder rate decreased. John R. Lott, Jr., PhD, author of More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws, stated, "States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes... The effect on 'shall-issue' [concealed gun] laws on these crimes [where two or more people were killed] has been dramatic. When states passed these laws, the number of multiple-victim shootings declined by 84 percent. Deaths from these shootings plummeted on average by 90 percent and injuries by 82 percent." A Dec. 10, 2014 Pew survey found that 57% of people believe that owning a gun protects
Concealed carry has been in news for a while now and is a hot topic. Concealed carry means more guns around us. Those who not paying attention might assume that open concealed carry is something new, something rare, perhaps reckless at best and dangerous at worst, but that is far from the truth. The Daily Caller newspaper states that, “concealed carry is currently legal in 44 states, and in 30 states you don’t need a license to openly carry a holstered pistol.” The norm states that one had to be licensed to hide the licensed gun. Over the years various restrictive gun laws have been created state by state, largely in an effort to suppress the ability of minorities and criminals to carry guns. The ability to lawfully carry a hidden gun became
In the past six months, there have been a total of 19,635 gun incidents. Out of those 19,635 incidents, 107 were mass shootings, 829 were home invasions, and 604 were for defensive use, according to Gunviolencearchive.org. It is unbelievable to see the number of gun related incidents that have happened in just the past six months. What is even more unbelievable to imagine is that so many of those incidents could have been avoided if people were allowed to carry concealed guns in certain places. Concealed carry, or concealed weapons, is the practice of carrying weapons, such as a handgun, in public in a concealed manner. All fifty states in the United States allow concealed carry in public places to some degree. But, some places, for example, schools, restaurants, and stores, prohibit concealed weapons. The controversy about whether concealed weapons should be prohibited in certain locations has been debated for years, and more often in the past decade. On one side of the debate, supporters of the “gun-free zones” claim that prohibiting concealed weapons in certain locations will reduce crime and ensure that the location is free of gun violence, allowing concealed weapons can result to more guns landing in the hands of criminals, and some even insist that public safety should be left to professional, qualified police officers, not ignorant citizens with little to no expert training. However, it is absolutely necessary to know that prohibiting weapons in certain locations
The question of banning or permitting concealed guns evokes many more questions. According to Lott (2013), when the state legislative hearings were processed about concealed-handgun laws, the most usual concerns involved the problem of armed citizens who may possibly attack each other in the affected state that could follow car accidents, or even may accidentally shoot a dutiful police officer. However, the author argues, the evidence does not show the grounds for such fears: although 31 states have already had such concealed-handgun laws for many decades, there was only one case of a concealed handgun used in a shooting after a traffic accident. Moreover, that incident involved self-defense (Lott, 2013, p. 13).
Citizens have the right to carry weapons without those around them knowing they do. That right, clearly stated in the 2nd amendment goes as follows; “The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” To infringe is to “wrongly
Many Americans tend to be on opposing sides when dealing with such a controversial issue such as gun control. A more specific category of such a broad topic as gun control is the practice that some Americans participate in, called concealed carry. Concealed carry is the practice of carrying a weapon, typically a handgun, on one’s body that is hidden from the public. This political issue hits many different institutions within America, such as many special interest groups, the constitution and Judicial branch of the government, and also the principle of Federalism.
In 1968, the Gun Control Act was passed after the assassinations of major political figures such as President Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King. This Act expanded regulations on the sale and distributions of firearms, including banning the sales of guns to individuals with a criminal background. In 1993, The Brady Law was an amendment added to The Gun Control Act 1986. This particular law required manufacturers to wait five days before hand guns were allowed to be sold to a person. In the last two decades gun violence and mass shootings have led politicians to re-evaluate the legislature regarding the legal accessibility to firearms by the public, especially military style assault rifles. The goal of reforming gun control is to
There is a small percentage of the population that has a concealed weapons permit. In that small percentage everyone is a law abiding citizen, except for a few here and there. They are a set of citizens hard to tell apart in a crowd because of their normality. This meaning that they do not plan on doing harm with their weapon. They respect the fact that having a concealed weapon is serious business. They are willing to go through the tests and classes that one must go through to obtain their permit. They know all the laws, which they must fallow, with that one could safely say that a concealed weapon would be handled safely by this set of people.
Texas is about to pass an open carry bills, which will loosen the restriction on carrying handguns that started on the reconstruction. Many gun owners will be able to expose their guns without being questions by law enforcement. Texas has the reputation of one of the most gun-friendly states in the nation. The state does not require its residents to have permit or registration to purchase or own shotguns or rifles, but it requires its residents to have permits to buy handguns. Despite the fact of being a gun-friendly state, Texas does not allow handgun owners to display their guns to others in any manners, which means that their guns need to be concealed when they carry them to public places. The open carry law, if passed, will lift that restriction. Gun owners will be able to display their shotguns to the public in a non-threatening manner. The law will most likely be passed this year legislative session since Texas governor, Greg Abbott, already said that he will sign any bills that help expanding the Second Amendment including the open carry law(Root, 2015). This paper will examine open carry law’s advantages and disadvantages and provide possible solutions for problems that the current gun laws cannot solve.
A concealed weapon is a firearm hidden on a person. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that "laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man"(Lee 147). "In Florida, 315,000 permits had been issued to citizens for concealed weapons by December 31, 1995. Only five have been revoked because the permit holder committed a violent crime with a gun" ( Kopel 129).
The U.S cannot by law completely bane the ownership of guns due to the Second Amendment that gives the people the right to bear arms, this does not mean you can bear arms anywhere any time you want to. In some states, citizens are allowed to carry concealed handguns, but there are restrictions. These laws are now referred to as concealed carry where the gun cannot be seen. There are also open carry laws where the pistol is visible depending on the State, where rather than trying to conceal or hide the handgun on your person the pistol can be showing. This would allow you to strap the gun to your leg or your side allowing the pistol to remain visible. Open carry has its disadvantages because the criminals can see who is armed. With concealed carry criminals will be more on edge because they have no clue who are the people armed and which ones are the ones that are not armed. Also many people don’t feel comfortable seeing a pistol on someone’s person such as open carry. It has been proven time after time that when people can defend themselves, the outcome is almost always better and having a gun provides a sense of safety and security for many people.
