For the last few months, I have had the pleasure of interning with the Cleaning Validation group at Pfizer. While at Pfizer, I have learned so much about myself and all of the work that is required for the production of a new drug. When I began my internship, I was not sure what I had gotten myself into. Was I going to be a "lab rat"? Or was I going to be a paper pusher? Luckily, I have been able to split my time between the lab and my desk. While in the lab, I have been working on degradations and the 5S process. Before I arrived at Pfizer, my group committed to the 5S process, which is sort, shine, set in place, standardize, and sustain. By the end of the first week, we had all the walls painted, the lights replaced, and all the lab benches and cabinets cleaned. By the end of the second week, we had the floors and sink professionally cleaned. The amount of time that we spent cleaning the lab, took a toll on the timeline for our project. One of the major parts of the 5S process was determining where all the essential equipment was going to be stored. To help solve this problem and speed up our studies, we decided to create designated workstations. Each task, such as degradation and dissolution, spiking, and dilutions, has its own workstations. This makes working in the lab easier because all the consumables that you could possibly need are located right at that station. In the short time that I have been able to work in the new space, I have noticed such a difference. Before we began the process, I ran a couple of degradations and struggled to find he materials that I needed and the space needed to run the degradation. In the new space, I was able to find all of the consumables that I needed within seconds. In addition, there was plenty of space to run the degradations. I never realized how important a well laid out lab was. After working in the labs at school, I figured that I would be able to work in a confined space, however, that
