Handling those work for exposure calls
Trying to keep those costs down and still reaching out many magicians think of free exposure. Let me begin saying there is nothing wrong with this approach. But many forget to make it stretch. They work with the opportunity as explained by the caller. Those calls go something like this.
“We are having a craft fair at the local middle school next Saturday. We thought it would be nice to have a magician either do a short show or walking around doing magic. As you might remember this is the element many magicians forget. I tell them I am interested but need more help with exposure than just passing out my cards. This usually stops them in their tracks and they look at me like they just were hit with a water balloon. So, I make a few suggestions:
1. Will my name be included with your flyers and other advertisements you distribute?
2. Will there be a place I can mount a banner or signage about me at the event?
3. If you have voice amplification and will be making periodic announcements are you going to read a message I prepare for you? Will you “plug” me many times during the event?
4. Can I have some brochures at the registration table people can take with them?
5. If I am doing a couple shows can I have a table set aside? I would like to sell some simple magic tricks.
6. If there will be a remote broadcast, news story or radio, will I be mentioned or included in the video shot?
7. If someone will be interviewed during the marketing will my magic be mentioned?
8. If selling tickets will I be reference on the ticket? If so can I include my contact information?
9. If there will be raffles or door prize drawings will I be included in the awards as they are announced? (I want to be in the public eye, even if all I do is hand the award to the recipient.)
10. Will you recommend me to other organizations you work with? I will provide brochures you can pass along

Sexton explains how the main difference between stage and street magic is that for street magic, the magician creates this small-scale and intimate illusion by using pure sleight of hand, while stage magic is performed in front of a large audience and the commotion caused from the audience helps cover up anything that the magician is setting up.
