Mobile devices have highly evolved over time. In fact, in todays’ world almost everyone has some sort of device in hands reach. Whether it be a computer, cell phone, or even a television remote. But although devices were devised to benefit our society, it also brought along many flaws. In recent discussions about mobile devices, a controversial issue has been whether spending a large amount of time on mobile devices are a bad thing. However, some argue that mobile devices are good daily tools for learning and other aspects. In a recent study Hilao (2017) states that Mobile devices plays a big role on students’ lives in the digital age by offering different types of learning, such as open-ended questions, SMS background knowledge, and engaging the students in learning. My own view is that, Mobile devices play an important role in most peoples’ lives. Computers, phones, and other types of devices have become very common. This issue is important because the number of students around the world gaining technology is rapidly growing and with the fixture of distraction, Lack of sleep, performance in school, and social skills students will have a positive outcome from mobile technology. Sleep schedules are an important aspect in a college students’ life, mobile devices may affect students’ sleep but by fixing this, students’ have a better chance of being successful in their education and careers. For example, most college students’ lay in bed either watching a video on their
Phones are easy to use and very accessible by both students and teachers. “Smartphones allow us to take down notes any time, any place.” “smartphones allows you to access resources and material quickly before an exam.” “not only can we make videos, but we can also edit them, add text, filters, effects and more.” This is true because smartphones really do work in a way that is helpful to students and teachers. This evidence is supporting it by just stating that there are many cool and useful ways to use them.
In order to communicate an important subject to readers, the structure of the paper must be well done so that it can be well used when defending a certain point of view. In this case, Jacobs’ work would be a strong resource to use to support the argument that teachers should use innovative devices. Jacobs’ defended the argument that mobile devices in the classroom should be used as learning tools, instead of being viewed as distractions. People would have never expected a cell phone to help students’ engage in the classroom more, so think twice before making a judgement or defining the use of a particular object, they should take a closer look, analyze and determine if it is really worth
In the past few years, cell phones and tablets have begun to take over people’s lives. Cell phones hold our entire lives on them, from what time we wake up in the morning to directions to get everywhere. People spend the majority of their lives on their cell phones, texting, tweeting, or even just playing games. Not only do these devices effect our social lives, but they also affect how we sleep at night and how much sleep we get. Sleep is very important in maintaining homeostasis and proper health, in order to function properly, “healthy adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep each night” (helpguide). If a person does not get the amount of sleep- they need, then they will become groggy and less efficient at work or school.
Education: When devices were introduced years ago at schools, and students were allowed to use their personal devices at the classrooms, it was considered a big advantage in the learning environment. For Turkle, this situation has added not only distraction to the classrooms, also has contributed to the atrophy of the ability for taking notes and reading. According to the studies, when students are in classes multitasking on laptops or smartphones, everyone around them learns less. They are doing different things at the same time, and even when they think are being more productive, are less. According to the author, multitasking is depleting focus on the main point.
Many students focus on their cellphones instead of their education during school. Source 2 states that, “ While smartphones can lower educational costs and enhance student satisfaction, they are not shown to improve academic performance.” Source 1 explains that, “ Students believe they are capable of multitasking with smartphones, but they are not and earn lower grades as a result.” On the darker side source 5 tells that, “ Some students use their
As we learned in lecture, sleep is an important component in improving a person’s overall health. Because sleep is vital for cognitive function and available time to spend sleeping is limited for college students, like myself, it is advantageous to change sleeping behaviors to maximize the benefits sleep can provide. After tracking my sleeping schedule for a week, I have noticed some patterns and behavior that may be affecting the quality of sleep I am getting. Based on my sleep journal, I could improve my sleep by cutting back on the amount of caffeine I intake and the time spent on electronics before bed to try to reduce the amount of time needed for me to fall asleep.
Many people believe that bringing cell phones to school may cause distractions. However, a recent study leads more and more people to believe that mobile phones could in fact be a “powerful learning tool” (Docksai), serving as a mobile computer ("Cell Phones in the Classroom” ). Elizabeth Hartnell- Young, a research fellow from the University of Nottingham tracked 331 students from 14 to 16 years old, for learning through cell phones. They used cell phones to make short videos, set homework reminders, record poems, and transfer files from home to school (Docksai). Students described their learning experience as “motivated” (Docksai). Many experts pointed out that students have a “deep comfort level” with mobile phones (Docksai). In other words, students could learn more if they enjoyed what they were doing. An increasing number of teachers have changed their point of view towards cell phones, many now believe that cell phones would exert positive effects on education. For example, some teachers have already started to collect homework online and answer questions through text- messaging. A school in Saskatchewan encouraged students to read and share thoughts about books through their cell phones (Docksai). Furthermore, according to a recent survey, the majority of students could refrain from using cell phones and not be distracted by them in class. In fact, over 71% of students didn’t
Everywhere you look technology is all around us, it follow us to our homes to our schools as well as the younger generation. Cell phones has been a big part of everyone’s daily life, as to planning or scheduling there days, texting others, social media, and calling their love ones. However, having these wonderful technology it can be a distraction to others as well as the owner of that phone. In these readings, “The use and abuse of cell phones and text messaging in the classroom: A survey of college students” by Deborah R. Tindell and Robert W. Bohlander and “Rude texting students say they’re only multitasking” by Mike Cronin and finally an article called “Views on use of cellphones in college classrooms” by Mclean Bennett. These three article
In today’s world, electronic devices are becoming increasingly conventional and accessible. With the advancement of technology, the people advance along with it by cultivating and using technology. It is not surprising that laptops, phones, tablets, and televisions are common in this era. Consequently, people may engross themselves in these appliances, distracting themselves from other tasks such as school or work. Technology takes residence in schools, offices, and homes, making it hard to escape the grasps of it. It is convenient, therefore, it will have use. Thus, it can lead to problems such as losing quality time on studying, losing focus, and texting while driving. Technology is essential in today’s
Some people think that phones should stay in school but doing this is basically allowing students to do non school related things on them. “Critics believe, however, that allowing these devices will only encourage their non-educational use in school, to the point, where they will be a significant distraction for teachers and students and a potential tool for cheating”, says Kinjo Kiema. Nowadays people are starting to come up with new ways to cheat on school related things and most of it is done on cell
The rewards from using cell phones can be great, but by using them we may not reach whatever goal we have set because they can hinder us from making it there. Cell phones being used as educational tools can be a helpful thing if we decide to take the necessary steps to ensure that students are doing what they are supposed to. Although cell phones can be used in ways to benefit us in the learning environment, they still play a major part in why they grades and test scores look the way do. This is exactly why cell phones shouldn’t be used as educational
In conclusion, it is clear that mobile phones are not necessary tool for education beside that they can be used as learning, researching, and communicating devices. They can produce many problems that make learners distract from education, feel sick and experience cheating. So it is our responsibilities to choose which one is good or bad about our lives. It is necessary to us to choose the good one which can
Schools are the traditional driving forces for young socialisation. The main problems raised by students using mobiles at school have been widely documented from “concerns over unacceptable social behaviour and txt-bullying, to problems with literacy and learning distractions”. (Twiss, 2009 p.70).
In Tamara Brenner’s article, “The Use of Mobile Devices in the College Classroom”, she stresses that the use of cell phones is distracting in a college classroom setting. This article was published by the Bok Center by Harvard University. Brenner has a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology, and taught undergraduate life science classes at Harvard. Today’s day and age is almost completely dependent on technology. Teenagers and students today have a completely new problem to deal with as far as how to balance cell phone time and lecture time in classrooms. Anybody in a college classroom setting should pay attention to what is in this article, especially students and teachers. Brenner uses strong studies and research papers to inform the reader about the issue as well as looks at all sides of the argument on how distracting mobile devices are in the college classroom.
Mobile telephones, sometimes called cellular telephone, is a type of short-wave analog or digital telecommunication in which a subscriber has a wireless connection from a mobile phone to a relatively nearby transmitter. The transmitter's span of coverage is called a cell. As the cellular telephone user moves from one cell or area of coverage to another, the telephone is effectively passed on to the local cell transmitter. A mobile phone is a wireless handheld device that allows users to make calls and send text messages, among other features. The earliest generation of mobile phones could only make and receive calls. Today’s mobile phones, however, are packed with many additional features, such as web browsers, games, cameras, video players and even navigational systems. A smartphone is a device that lets you make telephone calls, but also adds in features that, in the past, you would have found only on a personal digital assistant or a computer--such as the ability to send and receive e-mail and edit Office documents, for example. In general, a smartphone will be based on an operating system that allows it to run applications. Apple's iPhone runs the iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones run the BlackBerry OS. Other devices run Google's Android OS, HP's webOS, and Microsoft's Windows Phone. While almost all cell phones include some sort of software (even the most basic models these days include an address book or some sort of contact manager, for example), a smartphone will have
