The National Collegiate Athletic Association, or the NCAA, is a non profit organization that organizes and regulates the student athletes of 1,281 institutions. According to the NCAA website, it hosts over 460,000 athletes, all of which work an average of 43.3 hours a week.
My partner and I affirm the resolution resolved; NCAA Student Athletes ought to be recognized as employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act for three main contentions;
Contention 1: The NCAA’s games and tournaments bring in revenue and requires students to miss school.
Contention 2: NCAA coaches get paid an average of $823,000 annually, why shouldn’t the players be paid?
Contention 3: Success in college sports steeply increase the rate at which students apply for a

According to collegesportsscholarships.com, the average NCAA coach will receive an $823,000 salary per year with the top five coaches will receive $440 million a year, when the schools hand out only $426 million on average in scholarships. Coaches are an essential component to college sporting teams, but so are the players. Why shouldn’t the players be paid?
And as brought up in my first contention, schools can afford to play their players, so why should only the coaches see the profit? This leads us to my third and final contention; Success in college sports steeply increases the rate at which students apply for a college, and athletes should receive credit for that. According to jstor.org, college level football and basketball (seperate if asked in rebuttal) raise the quantity of college applications by anywhere from 2% to 8% annually. So why shouldn’t the athletes get credit for helping their schools? They bring so much exposure to their colleges, which in turn brings more students to a college, the least a college can do is pay them back. Additionally, according to InfoBase’s Issues and Controversies database, colleges put their athlete’s names and faces on video games and merchandise, yet the players won’t see a penny. That seems pretty unfair considering professional athletes get paid thousands every time their name or face is used in some sort of media. Exposure in the media is also a driving factor that causes more application rates to a certain
College athletes are taken advantage of and deserve to be compensated for their services while playing sports. These students are exploited and used to make money and out of everything that particular school makes, the athlete never given a penny of it. All of the hard works, blood, sweat and tears that they put into that
College sports have a big market on the major school levels. These major schools can bring in 30 to 40 million dollars per year to the school through the athletic programs. The players get none of this share of money even though they are the ones who have to put themselves at risk during these tough games that provide the school profit. You may say that these college athletes are getting a free education at their choice of university but some many say they should get paid. Today as much money that runs in and out of these schools there is a huge controversy to whether or not these student athletes should get rewarded for their hard work on and off the
College athletes should receive some sort of payment for playing for their college. Many people believe that college athletes should be paid financially, because they are considered to be taken advantage of by the NCAA and most other school systems, because they should receive pay. Most college athletes are the main reason for huge profits from many merchandise sales; live events such as the game itself, and media and live coverage also provide sales increases. Differently from the professional sports, the athletes don’t get any type of cut. College teams may not have the same national expectations as the professional ones, but they are just as important, if not, even more important than professional athletes. Millions of dollars of merchandise,
While people may have the opinion that college athletes should be paid, the debate for
Throughout the years college sports have been about the love of the game, filled with adrenaline moments. However, the following question still remains: Should college athletes get paid to play sports in college? Seemingly, this debate has been endless, yet the questions have gone unanswered. The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) plays a vital role in this debate. The NCAA is a billion dollar industry, but yet sees that the athlete should get paid for their hard work and dedication.
But why should a student athlete be paid in the first place? Their just athletes right? They go to school just like everyone else? What makes them so special? What makes a college athlete different than the average student is the amount of revenue that they help bring to their selected colleges. This type of revenue is made up from ticket sales, merchandise, media rights and contributions. “USA today” reported that the University of Texas generated $167.7 million dollars from their athletic programs, and that’s just one school. With this in mind, imagine just how much money other colleges are making from their athletics. Sure one can make the argument that they should not be paid because they are not professionals, but one can’t ignore the fact that they are bringing in millions of dollars and seeing none of it.
They also need to get paid because of how much extra money the colleges have. Most college coaches get paid millions and that 's just for coaching the team, it’s not him that brings in the money it the players. The highest paid coach in college football is Nick Saban getting paid just a bit more than 7 million. (Washington Post) According to USA today their are more than 9 athletic directors that make more than 1 million and about 50 that make around 500,000. Their would be caps for basketball it would be 650,000 and for football it would be 3 million so neither of those are even close to the 11 billion the collages make a year. The amount players would make is 25,000 each and all that added up among the players would not even be more than 1 coach. They
When it comes to college athletics, there always will be a problem that arises. It is one of the most controversial topics there is. One of the main issues within athletics is the idea of whether to pay college athletes or not. Several studies have been done along with articles from various sources. This has been on the rise especially since “March Madness” is coming up. “March Madness” may only consist of three weekends, however, an 11 billion dollar deal is made to televise the games (Wilbon). This is when you have to take the time to sit back and contemplate whether these college athletes really are getting the fair end of the stick. Under NCAA laws it is forbidden to pay these athletes for their performance yet at the same time they
One of the most important reasons why college athletes should not be paid is that most schools just simply can not afford to pay their athletes. Maxwell Strachan from the Huffington post reported that spokeswomen Meghan Durham from the NCAA stated that only about twenty colleges make more money on athletic programs than they spend on athletic programs. This shows that most colleges are not making any money off of their athletic programs and even if a college makes a
For example at the University of Texas an in state tuition is worth around $4,000 while out of state tuition is worth around $11,000. Now as previously stated, Texas football players’ fair market value is at $578,000 per year. So at the very least there is $567,000 per player that we really do not know where it goes. I understand that college athletes do not deserve all the money they bring in but if one really thinks about it there is no where else in the world of economics is there a person that spends over forty hours a week and brings in $500,000 per year for their institution, yet they are only compensated $11,000. The numbers do not match up. (Frommer, 2013) These numbers definitely do not match up when one takes into account coaches salaries. The average coaching salary in NCAA division 1 basketball is a massive $1.47 million per year. With Duke’s head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, making the large sum of $7.2 million per year . While Duke’s athletic director, Kevin White, brings in close $1 million per year. After looking over these stats, one quickly realizes why college athletes are not being paid. In 40 of the 50 states in the United States of America the highest paid public employee is not a government official, but the head coach of a college football or basketball team. In North Carolina the average income per household $45,570 while the tax rate is 5.8%. What this means is that on average each person in
College coaches receive sky high salaries while the booster clubs donate millions of dollars to the university 's athletic program, but those who are actually competing do not get paid. As a former athlete, I do not think college athletes should be paid. The NCAA recently ruled that athletes can receive more than just a full tuition scholarship, they can now also get their entire cost of attendance paid for, which includes money for meals and travel. it can be more than the cost of tuition, books, and room and board.
Kids grow up loving to play sports in their free time. They never get paid to play when they are at a young age. They do it for the love of the game and for the need for competition. This is the way that it is in college right now. College athletes compete with all their hearts to be the best they can for their schools. They don’t get paid a cent. It has been a common debate if that is the right way to do it. Should it be that college athletes do not deserve to get paid for playing a sport? It should not be this way. College athletes certainly should get paid to play.
Horace Mitchell, President of California State University-Bakersfield, NCAA Division I Board of Directors states “Head football coaches at the 44 NCAA Bowl Championship Series schools received on average $2.1 million in salaries. The highest paid public employee in 40 of the 50 U.S. states is the state university's head football or basketball coach. At the University of Alabama, the head football coach, Nick Saban, recently signed a contract paying him $7 million per year -- more than 160 times the average wage of a Tuscaloosa public school teacher.” The amount of pay and benefits that the coaches and universities receive because of the players is so substantial and just plain unfair. The players put the coaches on the radar and make great amounts of endorsement deals while the players themselves still struggle to get through college with hardly any money to spend.
As previously stated, Texas football players’ fair market value yields at $578,000 per year. At the very least there remains a total of $567,000 per player that remains unknown as to where it goes. College athletes do not deserve all the money they bring in, but if one really thinks about it, nowhere else in the world of economics does a person spend over forty hours a week and brings in $500,000 per year for their institution, yet they receive compensation of $11,000. The numbers do not match up. (Frommer, 2013) These numbers definitely do not match up when one takes into account coaches’ salaries. (Berkowitz, 2012) The average coach NCAA division 1 basketball acquires a salary of $1.47 million per year. With Duke’s head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, making the large sum of $7.2 million per year . While Duke’s athletic director, Kevin White, brings in close $1 million per year. After looking over these stats, one quickly realizes why college athletes do not get paid. In 80% of states the head coach of a college football or basketball team has the highest salary. In North Carolina the average income per household comes in at $45,570 while the tax rate comes in at 5.8%. This means that on average each person in North Carolina pays a little over $2,600 in state income taxes each year. Enough money goes into the officials of colleges and college athletics. The NCAA does not pay the people actually doing the service just so these high-ranking
College sports are big business. For many universities, the athletic program serves as a cash-generating machine. Exploited athletes generate millions of dollars for the NCAA and their schools, and never see a dime. In terms of profit, if all ties with the university were eliminated, an athletic program acting as its own separate entity could compete with some fortune 500 companies. So, why do the vital pieces of the machine, the players, fail to receive any compensation for their performance? The answer lies in the money-hungry NCAA and their practice of hoarding all the revenue. College athletes should receive payment for their play to make their college experience more bearable because they create huge profits and
