There are seven words that the Trump administration has allegedly banned the policy analysts at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in preparing the 2019 budget. However, CDC Director Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald issued a statement to deny the agency was prohibited from using the seven words or phrases.
The Washington Post identified the seven words or phrases as vulnerable, entitlement, diversity, transgender, fetus, evidence-based, and science-based. The instructions were given at a meeting on Thursday with senior CDC officials who are in charge of budget preparation, according to an analyst who participated in the 90-minute briefing.
Alternative phrases
But the analysts were reportedly provided alternative phrases to use. In

The report identified Allison Kelly, a senior leader in the CDC’s Office of Financial Services, as the one who banned the use of those seven words or phrases. However, Kelly did not explain to them the rationale behind the alleged prohibition, Snopes reported. Kelly was merely the one who relayed the order which was conveyed to her verbally.
Significant visibility
These issues, such as gender identity, abortion rights, and sexual orientation, were significantly visible during the administration of Barack Obama, the predecessor of Trump. After the Trump administration took over the White House, some key government departments – such as the HHS, the Departments of Justice, Education, and Housing and Urban Development – altered some federal policies and the manner of collection of information about gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual Americans.
In two polls of seniors that HHS conducted in March, questions about sexual orientation and gender identity were removed. The Department likewise excluded information about LGBT Americans from its portal.
The page on federal services for LGBT people and their families, which used to be a part of the HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, was archived. The outline included how members of the LGBT community can adopt and get help if they have been victimized by sex
Medical system in the world have defined Health in their own ways since time immemorial. Winslow (1920) defines public health as “ The science and art of preventing disease , prolonging life and promoting physical and mental efficiency through organised community effort for the sanitation of the environment , the control of communicable infections , the education of the individual in personal hygiene , the organisation medical and nursing services for the early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease ”.
It was now potentially unlawful for a plan to deny coverage for services that are included in a plan solely because of an individual’s gender identity or because of the gender used to enroll in a plan (NCTE, n.d.). It was a federal court ruling in 2015 (Rumble v. Fairview Health Services) that confirmed the ACA prohibits discrimination based on gender identity. The decision clarified that health care providers and hospitals accepting federal Medicare or Medicaid funds are subject to the ACA's prohibition of discrimination based on sex, which extends to transgender individuals (Kellaway, 2015). Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a rule confirming that the ACA prohibits discrimination based on gender identity, specifically in health care. Plans could no longer deny coverage for medically appropriate service simply because of a transgender identity or because of the gender listed on an insurance record (Albeni, 2015). Yet with these protections, there still remains a gap in transgender male reproductive

The 2014 executive order prohibited federal hiring practices from discriminating on the basis of gender identity (the policy already barred discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation). It also prohibited contractors that do business with the government
In 2010, the Affordable Care Act invoked a $75 millon dollar demonstration project known as the Medicad Emergency Psychiatric Demonstration that was amended in section 2707 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The change seemed to be just what the nation needed, however, there was fine print added to the amendment that changed the interpretation. The fine print stated, patients who are on Medicaid from the ages of 21-65 seeking inpatient mental health care can receive treatment under the law. However, the inpatient facility will receive no
Marriage and military service have been two of the biggest issues that have been pushed. These issues, unlike homelessness and police violence, are not usually the problems that are of the utmost importance to lower-class queer people and queer people of color. These two issues are also mostly only beneficial to middle-class white cisgender gays. Cis-hetero politicians will not discuss less “mainstream” issues unless there is an appetite for it in the base of voters that they are trying to win over. Unless queer people mobilize, cis-hetero politicians will continue to ignore vital issues that affect marginalized people within the LGBTQ+
Assessing the needs of the LGBT elderly population is essential, they are independent and it is hard for them to seek assistance. Furthermore utilizing various assessment tools within the geriatric LGBT population can provide insightful information regarding the type of care needed. The assessment measurement tools that can be used include the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), The Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale, and the Alcohol Use Screening and Assessment for Older Adults. In addition information will be provided regarding organizations such as SAGE (Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders) and the Griot Circle. These organizations can assist the patient with housing, social adult day programs, social services, health and wellness programs and many other services. Overall, we should treat people, the way that we like to be treated. Treat people with respect, courtesy and be culturally
n and Gay individuals with time had made quite an impact on healthcare policy and vice versa. It went from prohibited to being legal statewide since 2011. Many activists, interest groups, individuals, etc. have pushed to make an influence on policymaking for these Lesbian and Gay individuals to have the same level of quality as any other person in healthcare. There are individuals whom are for it, and against it. I shall explain further by providing both point of views and by using (3) three different resources. ACA (Accountability Care Act) opened its door to provide the proper assistance for the Lesbian and Gay individuals to be free of any disparities is simply just the beginning more needs to be done before they start to finally receive the quality care that these individuals deserve.
There is a confluence of factors that is related to providing adequate health care on a systemic basis within virtually any population setting. While attempting to address the health care needs of such a setting is always a challenge, this challenge becomes exacerbated by varieties in social and economic conditions, as well as those that apply to race and ethnicity. The problems that plague contemporary health care coverage in the United States are myriad and even more complicated by the fact that many of these issues are interrelated. Three of the most salient of these difficulties concern health care coverage, health inequities, and ineffective health promotion. However, prudent analysis of this topic indicates that of these three areas, the one that is most problematic is that of healthcare coverage. The logic behind this fact is fairly simple; improved health care coverage can ameliorate many of the issues that stem from ineffective health promotion and health inequities.
“Discrimination and inequality faced by gays and lesbians in the United States are widespread, and the social movement to end such with the principles of equality and fairness.”( Blackwell, C. W., Ricks, J. L., & Dziegielewski, S. F. (2004). I do feel that we as society has come a long way since the Stonewall Riots of 1969 when it comes to obtaining equal rights for the GLBTQ community. However, there are still segments of today's population that hold personal prejudices against gays and lesbians. With these prejudices, it’s important to understand that there is a direct correlation between discriminatory practices within the state and federal systems and public policy drafting. As I have mentioned, we have come a long way in regards to changing policy and practices with our Country. However, there is still much work to be done regarding issues that affect the gay and lesbian population when it comes addressing lifestyles and equal rights. Here are just some examples of rights that many take for granted. However they are not always afforded to the gay and lesbian population and their
One of the campaigns is lung cancer campaign ‘got a cough, get a check!’ it shows the symptoms of lung cancer, saying that if you are coughing a lot or if you cough up blood, neck pain and shortness of breath to see your doctor. This will mean that people can be checked earlier than leaving it for it to just get worse. Lung cancer is the most common cause of death ‘’it is known that smokers and ex-smokers have a particularly high risk of developing the disease: although most lung cancers are related to smoking, 10% of people with lung cancer have never smoked.’’ (http://lungcancercampaign.org/patient-information/). Which links to the smoking
For example, the Department of Homelands Security (2010) came up with a list of DHS risk Lexicon that was an advancement of the 2008 version. The definition of the words that are relevant to the work of the Department of Homeland Security delimits the scope of its operations. It also improves the communication among all the concerned parties and facilitates the exchange of structured
“The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of Americans by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services.” (Secretary, 2014). Given the mission statement of the HHS, the question becomes whether the Trump administration’s goals and political appointments within the HHS ranks are in furtherance of, or in contradiction to, the HHS’s stated purpose. The short answer is both yes, and no.
Mr. Sessions’ order replaced the order from December 2014, given by Eric Holder, the previous Attorney General. In Mr. Holder’s directive, the Justice Department was to view “sex” as encompassing gender identity while including transgender protection (Savage, 2017).
The 21st Century has seen the healthcare system struggle with challenges such as an increase in chronic conditions, an increase in government spending on public health, and emerging threats such as global health security and antibiotic resistance. On the positive side, more people have gained access to care. To deal with these emerging issues as well as existing challenges, we need an effective public health workforce. The public health has the role of protecting the health of citizens. This could be through health promotion and lobbying for increased access to care. To address the problem of the rise in chronic ailments, public health has a role of creating awareness on chronic conditions, their symptoms and management. This is because these conditions are expensive to treat and drain the resources of patients and their families. Public health should therefore educate the public on the importance of screening and conduct these screening services for early diagnosis and prevention of chronic diseases. Another role of public health in the 21st Century is to provide and use evidence based practice in providing clinical services. This would help in addressing some of the emerging challenges such as antibiotic resistance.
