Do you wonder why your classmates are always jittery? Most likely it’s because you don’t have recess or a good break in between classes. Yeah, yeah it sounds kind of kiddish but it’s really not. Recess can benefit children and adults, but more specifically teens. If you attend a middle school most likely you don’t have recess. Recess benefits teens because it gives an opportunity for teens to stay healthy, mentally and physically. Another reason recess benefits teens is because it increases teens focus stability.
I have reviewed five research articles that have done studies on the benefits of physical education and recess may have on elementary students, and their performance and in some reviews on behavior as well.
When thinking back to Elementary as a little kid the first thing you remember is having recess, a time for kids to socialize get out energy and help burn off the fat they just ate in their meal, since recess is normally after lunch. So why not have recess in Middle school?
In “Project Classroom Makeover” by Cathy Davidson, has many great ideas and facts about why should the school system should change. Although i may agree in some points as like the school system is working as a factory. I believe that changing some aspects like the way we learn things can and may keep the kids coming to school. For example, in my classes some of my classmates struggle the way the teacher teaches us so when they ask for my help i have tried different methods and it works. They start to understand instead of struggling but that’s because i didn’t choose to teach it the same way as the teacher. And with this experience i noticed that teaching the same way all the time won’t work students will be struggling because they learn in
Why kids deserve to have recess and not sit on the couch and watch tv all day when they could be outside and spend time burning enger and spending time with friends. Most kids have been on phones, tablets,tv,ipads, and why that is bad is because if kids are to spend more than,4 hours on tv they could grow up to be overweight. Also if kids watch violent shows they can show aggressive behavior. After kids show that behavior they will become addicted to tv and devices which then if you don't stop them and take it away for a while then the kids will still show that behavior.
Middle school students should have a 20 minute or more recess because not only would kids be happier and healthier but they would do better in school. One reason middle schools should have recess is that kids are supposed to exercise 30 minutes every day to stay healthy. If kids don’t get enough exercise, they become obese and unhealthy. Adding on, when kids are outside their bodies get Vitamin D from the sun and this gives their bodies nutrition and when they are inside they do not get this nutrition that is needed to keep them healthy. Vitamin D helps kids develop muscles and grow, so it is very important for the to get enough. Also, a third reason middle schools should have a 20 minute recess is that kids get very stressed over homework and school projects and if they are outside for 20 minutes studies show that kids forget about their homework and enjoy socializing with other people.
A change this drastic can only be called a revolution; a revolution of our perceptions of school. In order for this to happen it has to start from the top, the seniors, and more specifically, myself. I plan to take the first step in this revolution, hopefully inspiring those younger than me to follow.
Recess is a scheduled break in every student’s day that students use for unorganized sports and socializing with friends. Having recess teaches Middle Schools and High School students to learn to relax and not be in such a hurry all the time. Students ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade perform a lot better in their academics when given a 15-30 min break. Having that 15-30 minute break also helps students to pay attention and work harder in the class. Student’s need recess because it not only helps them physically but also mentally.
Class time is over, and it is finally time for recess! Thousands of children all over the world go out for recess in the middle of their school day. They go outside and just have fun! The younger children play on the playground, while older kids and teens either play athletic games or socialize. But, after 15 to 20 minutes, the whistle blows. It is the end of recess. “Awwwww!” most kids and teens say when they hear the whistle. “We need more time!” other kids say. Well, children and teens are exactly right. They do need a longer recess. According to researchers, studies have shown that children and teens need more recess time. A longer recess time would be helpful because it would help children and teens with many things.
No Child Left Behind has created a multitude of emotions and high stress situations throughout schools nationwide. Getting students to perform well on standardized tests seems to be the goal at whatever cost it takes to get there. Administrators have turned to slashing teacher prep time and much needed breaks as well as taking away physical activity from those that need it most, our young students. This writing will look at why recess is being taken away and the many benefits children get from recess. Information will be presented about the different benefits children get from recess and connections will be made as to how that may benefit them in future years.
Research has been found that it helps kids succeed more on test, and helps them get in better shape . Recess is a fun time to do what you want to do. It is important for kids to have recess because it gives them time to relax, It helps them focus better, and gives them time to Socialize
The first reason why kids need recess is they will be more focused and less fidgety. A no recess school was studied by a doctor from Georgia State University’s Department of Early Childhood Education, Doctor Olga Jarret, to see if giving the kids recess would affect their behavior. 60% of the children, including 5 special needs kids, proved that recess gave them more focus and they were less fidgety, or moving a lot, on the day they knew they had recess. Kids build up energy throughout the school day leading them to lose focus, fidgety, and lose focus. Giving the kids recess releases some of their energy, giving them enough to focus for the rest of the day. Letting them have recess not only releases energy, but feeds the brain for more focus.
What needs to be changed about the structure of the school? One thing that needs to be changes about the school would have to be the arrival. Most kids say this because of how they sometimes don’t get enough sleep, so the are really tired when their at school. Also if kids are sleepy at school then they are most likely to not pay attention to the teachers because of how tired they are. Kids also need more time to get ready and eat breakfast, because some of the times people are late to their bus stops cause of not having much time to get ready. Another thing that should be changed about the structure of the school is to have shorter periods. One example could be to have the days be shorter so they can have time for other activities in or out of the school. Another example could be to have shorter periods so we can add in another class or activity. Third thing that can be changed about the structure of the school could be to have a recess or a free time period. There
So far high school is working for me. If I could redesign the high school I would have a way to make the students more creative. I would try to design it in a way where students aren't afraid of their answer. They don't try to see if it is right or wrong. I would like my students to be confident in their answers. I would prepare students for college by having some college classes and teach them about college and sometimes treat them like college students.
I don’t see any changes I would make, but something I would talk to the class about to make the classroom become more of a community would be respect. I would plan a mini lesson on respect and how we treat others for another day.
