The Importance Of School Schedules In Stratford Public Schools

The two middle schools in Stratford, Wooster and Flood, formed a joint committee to discuss revamping the school schedules. The philosophy of the scheduling committee is to organize instructional time in a way that will be conducive to the initiatives of the district’s five-year strategic plan. In future years, the district plans to eliminate honors classes and create heterogeneous groupings in all classes except mathematics. Such a change will require daily differentiated instruction by teachers to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Stratford Public Schools is also moving towards Master Based Learning so that students receive applicable, real-life learning experiences and so that their academic achievement is measurable. …show more content…

Receiving input from all members of the meeting allowed us to get an idea of the many variables and restrictions that would challenge us while creating a new school schedule. While the makeup of the scheduling committee was definitely well-planned, it also caused the meeting get sidetracked often by a multitude of issues that pertain to only one member. For example, the music teacher was fixated on the fact that her select choir students could not meet during a potential flex period since the choir consists of students from different grade levels and teams. The issue was discussed for a disproportionate amount of time and took away from other more pressing concerns of the committee. It was also concerning that there was no planned agenda or talking points planned in advance. The first meeting was extremely casual. Members had side conversations and it was difficult to determine which concerns of the committee should take precedence when creating the schedule. It would have been helpful if we delegated a person as committee chair to help keep the flow of the meeting and increase productivity. Lastly, I was surprised that no sample schedules from surrounding districts were shared by administration in order to give us a good starting point.
