The two middle schools in Stratford, Wooster and Flood, formed a joint committee to discuss revamping the school schedules. The philosophy of the scheduling committee is to organize instructional time in a way that will be conducive to the initiatives of the district’s five-year strategic plan. In future years, the district plans to eliminate honors classes and create heterogeneous groupings in all classes except mathematics. Such a change will require daily differentiated instruction by teachers to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Stratford Public Schools is also moving towards Master Based Learning so that students receive applicable, real-life learning experiences and so that their academic achievement is measurable. …show more content…
Receiving input from all members of the meeting allowed us to get an idea of the many variables and restrictions that would challenge us while creating a new school schedule. While the makeup of the scheduling committee was definitely well-planned, it also caused the meeting get sidetracked often by a multitude of issues that pertain to only one member. For example, the music teacher was fixated on the fact that her select choir students could not meet during a potential flex period since the choir consists of students from different grade levels and teams. The issue was discussed for a disproportionate amount of time and took away from other more pressing concerns of the committee. It was also concerning that there was no planned agenda or talking points planned in advance. The first meeting was extremely casual. Members had side conversations and it was difficult to determine which concerns of the committee should take precedence when creating the schedule. It would have been helpful if we delegated a person as committee chair to help keep the flow of the meeting and increase productivity. Lastly, I was surprised that no sample schedules from surrounding districts were shared by administration in order to give us a good starting point. While some members did contact other districts prior to our second meeting, I think we wasted significant time attempting to recreate a basic structure suitable to the
One school district, took off 15 school days, and added 30 minutes to each day, all part of a $3 million budget cut. Having the 30 minutes added to the school day,
I believe that the title “ More zzz’s can lead to more A’s: Seattle Schools Move Start Time for Teens”. I believe that Beaumont High School should continue with the start time that the school has. If changed there would be later due to transportation, sports schedules, and the late dismissal. The first quote is “ The Seattle school board voted in November to adopt an 8:45 a.m. start time beginning next year for all high schools and most middle schools. The second quote is “Essentially, across the board, any domain that you look at improved pretty dramatically," said Dr. Judy Owens. The third quote is “The district could not overcome parent complaints about earlier start times for elementary students, which were made necessary because of the new later times for high school students”.
I feel that everything was discussed in a rush that it really did not give the commissioner’s time to really think the issues that were discussed through. The commissioner meetings have an agenda that must be followed and lets them be aware of all the subjects that need to be discussed. I know this meeting was being rushed because there was one time that they even accidently skipped one subject and had to go back to it. I was told that usually commissioner meetings are usually two hours long and this meeting was only one hour and eighteen minutes long. I must also say that not everyone in the council think alike. I felt that some agreed and some disagreed by the comments and suggestions they would give to certain issues.
School board meeting are essential to the everyday operation of school districts. The meeting was called to order by the school board president, the conservator himself, where a quorum was present to start the meeting. Our school board members are elected and can serve a 4 year term, but the district is under the state leadership currently. This is great, because with one individual making the decisions and voting, makes the process of getting things done a smoother approach. With too many individuals making decisions sometimes, they cannot agree or reach consensus.
Despite all the effort and advantages laid out by the district in implementing the Flex Mod schedule,
The authors of the two texts, “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” and “High School Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here's why.” has different claims regarding the school start time for teenagers, mainly high schoolers. The author of the first text advocates that later school start time is beneficial. However, the author of the second text contradicts the later school start time.
There were many different people present at this meeting. The first person I noticed was, Mr. Ford Thompson. Mr. Thompson is the Board President and he did most of the
One is Mr. Dan Aaker mentioning our sports teams. Another good thing is the fact that Mr. Aaker took time out of his announcements to talk about our fine arts, such and band and choir. He didn’t need to do this, but I am happy he did because I feel like the band and choir don’t get recognized by the school as much as they should. I think Mike Calhoon is very good at his job. He speaks clear enough to hear, impartial, and let discussions happen without putting his own input in too much. The board did as much as they could have in the time allowed, because they passed every single motion that was implemented. They also worked quick enough to end the meeting
Green Meadow teachers were feeling frustrated in the mid-1990s by their lack of time for planning and reflection; they were truly interested in changing the instructional format of the school day and year in order to benefit the predominantly minority, at-risk students at this school. One teachers experienced the year-round schedule and the opportunities intercessions provide for professional development or rejuvenation they are more content with their jobs, are more motivated, have a stronger commitment to their students, and are absent less from the classroom. Therefore, teachers are positively affected by using the year round school
Many items on the agenda were routine for the meeting, but I did not realize how much paperwork, reports, applications, and other forms were involved in a single meeting. This meeting addressed the instruction report, superintendent report, school nutrition report, fundraisers, field trips, and grant applications. The amount of work that goes into getting approval from the board is tedious for a district so large.
Presently, second grade students are engaged in identifying, creating, and extending a wide variety of patterns in accordance with the Virginia Math Standards of Learning (2010) 2.20 and the Newport News Public Schools (2015) pacing guide. The curriculum framework identifies the following essential skills:
Collaboration between teachers is a key component to professional development that will lead to higher student achievement. There is a need for schools to set up time for teachers to be able to collaborate together. This allows for teachers to help each other, matchup content, teach each other new and best practices, troubleshoot student issues just to name a few of the areas that collaboration time can help foster within a school. The key is to build time for teachers to be able to collaborate during the school day or week. This collaboration time needs to be between grade levels, departments, and cross curricular when needed. For many schools this is an afterthought to the school schedule or a fleeting thought after the master schedule is completed. A principal needs to keep an open mind to any strategy that will enable the teachers to be able to collaborate for the good of the students and the school.
The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey
When students go to a year round school, their grades are better. This academic increase is mainly due to not having summer break. During summer break, students tend to forget most of the information they learned in their previous school year. “At the end of the long break, teachers are finding themselves having to take extra time out of their day to re-teach their students the lessons they already learned the previous year” (Research Spotlight on Year-Round Education). Also, year round school provides teachers with more time to finish all of their lessons. Most teachers don’t even finish teaching the full text book they’re given.
Going further with the agenda, the way the meeting worked so smoothly was due because each member of the meeting had a task. For instance, Lt. Brent Abbott oversaw the city staff committee liaison, which from the looks of it he was part of finalizing any changes in the committee. Then they had Esther Mirador to keep track of time and
