Social symbols are standards or beliefs that society uses to define what is accepted or what’s not. It a model or visual interpretation of what society is viewed as depending on the favoured culture. In our modern world, there are various social groups in which ideas are copied and adapted for that social symbol. For example, throughout history people have used intelligence, skin color and body types as a figure of what is “in” or in other words a symbol that must be followed in order to be successful. First and foremost, Intelligence has always played a major role in how people succeed in life. Wealth or luxury is always perceived to be credited to top tier college graduates or top earning entrepreneurs based on the level of their achievements however that is not completely true. In today's society, people are creating businesses or doing things to gain money but the level of respect is not the same if someone were to go to college. For instance, a doctor may graduate from Harvard while another doctor may graduate from his or her community college. Due to the fact that the first doctor was a Harvard graduate, the doctor may be taken seriously with patients, coworkers and even jobs in the future. Sometimes though intelligence does not have to be learned but can be a natural given gift. Every person is born with a natural gift that helps push them to their goals. The issue being debated in the article “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff is street smarts versus book smarts. Gerald Graff is an English professor at the University of Illinois and has written many books. The author claims that people are better off if they are more street smart than book smart. The authors is very persuasive using real life examples. I although disagree with this claim. I think that you need an equal mix of both street and book smarts.
Society’s view on intelligence is becoming watered down from the truth. In Rose’s article, “Blue Collar Brilliance” Rose discusses societies outlook on intelligence. Rose explains how society thinks blue collared jobs don’t involve any intelligence, and anyone can do a blue collared job. He explains how society thinks that since you don’t have to have a high education to perform well in blue collared jobs, it takes little to no intelligence. Rose says, “We reinforce this notion by defining intelligence solely on grades in school and numbers on IQ test” (Rose 279). Rose explains that even though most blue collared jobs don’t require a college degree, they still demand many forms of intelligence. Rose also explains how his brother dropped out of school in the ninth grade but eventually became a successful employee of the company General Motors. Quarterly examines different IQ scores among varying incomes and argues that having a high IQ tends to put one in more financial distress. Quarterly states that “Intelligence alone doesn't explain why individuals succeed or fail in economic life.” This quote is a critical argument that supports Rose’s claim. Throughout Rose’s article his main idea is that a blue collar worker, receiving a low income, tends to hold more intelligence than typically perceived.
What about those individuals that are academically gifted but are unable to care for themselves, are they well educated? To be educated shouldn’t one be both academic and practical. I am not saying that one must possess a college degree because I know for some that this is not possible, and for some this opportunity may not come until later in life. One should possess basic knowledge that we obtain from school. We need to know about the past so that that following generations do not repeat it. We also need to know math and reading so that we can communicate as a society. Science, also important so that we understand how things function as a whole and why. As for practical knowledge, people need to know how to take care of themselves the basic survival needs. It goes back to the survival of the fittest. There are too many young adults being sent into the world unable to fend for themselves. They can’t cook, clean up after themselves or even do their own laundry.

Everyone has an opinion concerning what type of education is most useful. We all know that a college education is important in the competitive world we live in today. For instance, if you want a career in engineering, medicine, chemistry or law, a bachelor's degree or higher is mandatory. We often see people who have made it really big, and yet have little or no formal education. My opinion is, in order to get and keep a good paying job, you need both “street smarts” and “book smarts.” The combination of practical knowledge and explicit knowledge is the key to a successful career.
