A sociology major has many things to offer in aspects of careers. Such concentrations can include social work, community and youth work, counseling and therapy, and education. For me in particular, I am focusing more on the social work aspect of a sociology major. Having a social work concentration means you having a focus on certain core values. Some of these values include: service, social justice, integrity, and dignity of the individual. With a social work concentration, dignity of the individual is a key component. Social Workers have to be able to listen to each person and their individual situation and be able to comprehend what is going on and what is needed in order to correctly assess the situation. “Social workers treat each …show more content…
Possessing both of those qualities will help to ensure you to do the job to the best of the abilities possible. Factors that could diminish my path would be people refusing to accept my help. Some people, children especially, do not like to be questioned by someone with an authoritative figure. With that being said, a social worker could appear to be someone with an authoritative figure, causing some people to refuse to open up completely out of fear and misunderstanding of something they do not have a lot of knowledge about. Something else that could be a challenge is to be completely understanding of every individuals living conditions and or the situation they are in. Being one hundred percent open to every situation you could be in is a very important part of being a social worker. Care and compassion are also a must in this field as long as you know how to keep a safe distance and not get to emotionally involved or attached to the people you are working with. Ways that I can include dignity of the individual in my career path is by teaching my clients or anyone in general how they can better their self-worth in order to help them succeed. The definition of dignity is: an individuals sense of self-respect and self-worth, physical, and psychological integrity and empowerment. If I can help someone to see their self-worth it will make it easier for them to deal with whatever situation they are going through. If

Alot of people do not notice the mammoth problem drug abuse is in the United States, and how fast it is increasing in our society. Billions of dollars are spent each year to combat drug treatment but more are spent on buying and selling narcotics. Many people think they
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old. I want to change my line of work and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I am sure the fact that I was brought up by two extremely dysfunctional parents and the engaged in relationships that were of that same caliber, has much to do with why I believe I have something of positive significance to offer today. In short, I married at 19 years-old and had 5 children. I married an alcoholic and abuser of all forms and although I knew he drank and was abusive, I did not understand what I was dealing with back then in 1975; I did not understand abuse then as I do today. I grew up in it; I was very accustomed to it, it was normal to me. Ten

There are a set of multiple skills that I believe an individual should strive to possess when pursing Social Work. An individual working in Human Services should have the desire to help, be self aware, objective and remain unbiased, genuine, empathetic, and patient. Apart of being self aware is acknowledging the values, attitudes, beliefs, emotions, and past experiences one has and how it can affect their thinking, behavior, and relationships. Being able to identify these behaviors and change them is crucial for Social workers to do in order to avoid any interference when working with clients. Its important for a Social worker to be objective and evoke no judgment when evaluating clients and their situations. By doing this Social workers are
When I think about what social work means to me I think of a life of service, humanity, social justice, human dignity and worth, integrity and competence. You are stating that you have and desire to improve the lives of people less fortunate and/or unable to advocate for themselves. You understand the value of every human life, regardless of their background or belief. This is a profession that is above reproach where integrity and ethics are most important. That means something to me.
other people. One with a degree in social work can find a job in almost any field. Social workers can work in hospitals, clinics, schools, child welfare and human services agencies, settlement houses, and community development corporations. By pursuing the social work career will open doors to many different job environments. I am mostly interested in how social workers work in schools, hospitals, or settlement houses. Serving people in need is the main goal of a social worker and this is exactly why I chose this career. I know that a social worker is required to identify people who need help in a specific type of service. A social worker has to work with someone and should be able to assess the person’s needs, the situation that the person
Social workers have three major aspects that they focus on. One of the aspects that social workers focus on is helping people find solutions to the problems that they are facing. The second thing social workers focus on is working with the systems to give the people that they are helping access to the services and resources that they need in their lives in order to solve the problems that they are facing. The third aspect that social worker is to link their clients to systems. Social work works with social functioning. Social work focuses on how people interact with other people that are around them, and how interacting with each other affects themselves. As a social work professional it is critical that you have accurate assessments on your
The social work profession is a helping one that focuses on people of all ages, culture, economical status, ethnicity, gender, and political affiliation. Promoting social justice while being ethical conscious is an essential requirement for professionals practicing in the field of social work. Possessing the ability to act ethically is important because it affects the quality of the services offered to the population we serve. Being a social worker is far from an easy feat due to the difficulties and complexities of the job. This is due to its different settings accompanying different tasks.
Knowing this, it is especially important that social workers look at everyone as individuals, not posing their views onto others. Supporting this is the social work value of service which suggests that social workers, “Subjugate their personal desires in order to focus on the needs, interests, and wishes of the people they serve” (NASW Code of Ethics, 2008). In the chapter it discusses that since social workers make such an impact on their clients, it is important to not pose ones values onto our clients as it does not support our
There multiple fields in social work such as, the hospital, military, government, schools, private practice, and many other areas but the one thing all of these fields have in common is their mission. In a TEDx Talks (2015) Anna Scheyett talks about the mission of social work and she states, “the mission of social work is to promote and support individual and community well-being, and to fight for social injustice” (TEDx Talks, 2015,
Social work within the school system is an important and necessary asset to have. It helps many students with a severity of problems that children and adolescents face, whether it be at home or at the school itself. The role of the social worker is to establish a working relationship between the school and the family. In addition, they also help make sure that the child’s needs are met, whether it be their academic achievement, social, emotional and behavioural competence. By observing the child in its environment, they establish what needs that child might have and they figure out how they can utilize that perspective on the child to ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities academically or socially. We are looking at the different polices and job duties that a social worker faces while working in a school, whether it is a child with mental health related issues or a child with learning disabilities.
To be a social worker, one needs to have clear and concise boundaries when they practice. For example, to understand a client the social worker must level with said person and engage them on a personal level that develops trust but at the same time they must always remain professional and
The role of a social worker involves firstly obtaining a professional qualification at degree level set out by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC), who sets educational standards and regulates for social worker training. The social worker is an intricate part of society which supports and works with vulnerable individuals, families, children and the wider community in order to protect these individuals from harm, neglect and abuse. Assessment is core to social workers practice. As a social worker, professional practice entails supporting and evaluating assessments of need and risk continually, Walker and Beckett (2003). Social workers help individuals, families and communities to make informed choices and understand their own resourcefulness in order to bring about positive change to their lives. However, this can involve negotiating both complex and challenging situations. In some cases the social worker is required to intervene where children are at risk of harm from their parent or caregiver in a crisis child protection situation, the social worker would be required to present facts to the courts in order to obtain a child protection order, (Section 47 of the Children’s Act 1989). Ultimately the social worker must attempt to build positive relationships in sometimes adverse situations with individuals whom may or may not wish to cooperate, however, the social worker must where possible keep the family together.
Law has come to play a very important part in social work practice. It can be said that the understanding of law underpins and provides duties and power, whilst understanding the statutory legal requirements is essential for effective, fair, anti-discriminatory practice (Brammer 2007). Due to the shear amount of laws and legislation that have been passed or updated over the last decade, the role of the social worker, metaphorically speaking could be said to have become somewhat of a chameleon, forever adapting to their legal environment, whilst trying hard to remain true to the traditional values of the role of a social worker. It is this conflict between law and social work values that will be analyzed in this paper. From looking at the values that underpin the modern day social worker and then looking at some of the main legislation relating to adult services such as the Mental Health Act 2007, the Community Care Act 1996, Mental Capacity Act 2005 the relationship between these Acts’ and how they sit with social work values will then be discussed.
