Space exploration is declining because funding for it has gone down. Public and government interest has waned as there does not appear to any direction or goal; whereas, other countries have dramatically increased their commitment to space. Examples are China, sending men to space and India, which is sending satellites to Mars. Space exploration drives economies and consequently, these other countries are becoming industrial powerhouses. America is in danger of losing its place as a leader in everything connected with space. The discoveries that have stemmed from research in space exploration, have given us scientific discoveries such as MRI and laser devices, economic benefits such as global internet service and telecommunications and…show more content…
It then made America create a space program, and as President Kennedy had said in his speech to inspire the American public, “Finally, if we are to win the battle that is now going on around the world between freedom and tyranny…It is time to take longer strides… time for this nation to take a clearly leading role in space achievement, which in many ways may hold the key to our future on earth.” (Kennedy 514). Now as then, STEM education is poor, enemies threaten America, and funding for space exploration is meager. As space exploration is expensive and dangerous, some critics believe that America has bigger priorities and should concentrate on problems on Earth such as feeding the hungry, finding cures for diseases, environmental conservation and facing overseas threats (Ajian 20). While understanding that the temptation to focus on finding solutions to present problems is extremely high, it is important to realize that it was the research and development performed by NASA that has resulted in unexpected and valuable breakthroughs. Miniaturized integrated circuits, satellite technology, GPS navigation systems, bone-density measurements, miniaturized heart pumps and other technologies were all developed from NASA’s research that have enhanced all lives (Hall 24). Space programs have set goals that required innovation and technology yet to be developed. New spin-offs include water filtration systems that tum wastewater into drinkable water, wireless light
