This evidence pulled from the text suggests that women were looked at as having something wrong with them if they were not married. However, when Emily did begin to date “some of the ladies began to say that is was a disgrace to the town and a bad example to young people” (Faulkner 1002). Women were taught to seek marriage at a much younger age than men. Defying the social standards during this time period was generally frowned upon. The gender conception of a woman’s role has changed; however, complete independence of women is still not accepted. The independence of women is still not celebrated by the end of this time period. Like the previous authors Kate Chopan and Charlotte Perkins Gillman, Zora Neale Hurston and William Faulkner had messages centered around the independence of women. So far, independence has shown to be a commonality within all four authors. However, they also differ in their advancement. The advancement of women in between these two periods is of vast difference. During Chopan and Gillman’s time period, women had no equal rights or real sense of independence. Women were still viewed as best seen and not heard. By the time Hurston and Faulkner are writing their pieces, women’s suffrage movements have increased the awareness equality.
