As future healthcare professionals, it is our job to continue to enhance the systems approach to diversity and cultural competence in every healthcare team/setting in which we take part. Throughout this course, we have learned the importance of becoming educated and more empathetic towards the cultures and backgrounds of our treated patients. This greater understanding of specific populations and their beliefs/traditions allows for a more well-rounded, health-based relationship between patients and their providers. Establishing a rapport with clients is just as essential to overall wellness than the actual service provided by healthcare professionals. As a future speech-language pathologist, my ultimate career goal is to specialize in work with deaf and hard-of-hearing pediatric patients. One way that I can make a difference in the systems approach to diversity and cultural competence is to interpret for the deaf community in different healthcare settings, similar to Tomiko Cross’ interaction with the Japanese community at the Good Samaritan Hospital and Health Center of Dayton. Communication is a critical skill that is necessary to provide the best overall care. The deaf community often struggles with sharing their thoughts and understanding suggestions made by medical professionals. Being able to provide that voice would be one small step towards making healthcare more accessible to a population that struggles to connect verbally due to their disability. In order for the nurse to properly care for the patient, she must know and understand the patient’s culture. “Cultural care is a comprehensive model that includes the assessment of a client’s cultural needs, beliefs, and health care practices” (NRS-429V, 2011, p. 1). When healthcare providers approach patient care entirely from their own cultural perspectives and beliefs, their decisions and behaviors can negatively impact patient care. Evaluating and acknowledging my own beliefs, values, biases, and prejudices allows me, as a healthcare professional, to better understand patients’ cultural needs and values.
I am a Brazilian black male with military experience and diplomatic knowledge who grew up in a low-income household in a developing country. In addition, I have traveled to about 35 countries and am acquainted with people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, ethnic groups and nationalities. These characteristics and experiences allow me to see the world from perspectives that are unusual for most people. Besides being open-minded and non- judgemental toward all my future patients, I personally understand the difficulties faced by people of color, immigrants and individuals from low-income families. In sum, my background and my cultural literacy will allow me to be a sensitive and culturally aware patient-centered care.

Working as a Case Manager (CM) for a Medicaid-based Health Insurance has brought me in contact with patients of varied cultures, languages and races. As a CM For Metro Plus Health Plan, my responsibility is to teach High Risk pregnant women about their diseases, encourage them to stay in care with their Primary Care Physician/Obstetricians, explain the importance of taking their medications as prescribed, and adhering to all their providers plan of care, with the goal of encouraging these patient’s to become responsible and active participants in their own care. I have been able to directly observe as a clinician, how cultural competence can positively impact not only the relationship between my patients and I, but also the level of care I am able to provide.
Miscommunication, medication errors, and lack of compliance commonly occur in the healthcare field. These are just a few of the errors that occur due to the patient being from a different culture than the physician or healthcare worker. Those three errors alone have a huge impact on our healthcare today. If we could have a better understanding of other cultures that are different from our own we could have a dramatic decrease in errors and a great increase in healthcare participation. Training must be completed and must be done in more than one way. The first step is to make sure that all physicians and health care workers get the same nationwide training that focuses on improving cultural competence. How this is completed must be done in more than one way (Horwitz, 2001).
As a health care professional, we are faced with caring for patients of different cultural and ethnic background. Researching and learning about the patient’s culture values, beliefs and practices is essential and remarks the ability to provide quality health care for the patient. “Organizations and individuals who understand their clients’ cultural values, beliefs, and practices are in a better position to be coparticipants with their clients in providing culturally acceptable care” (Purnell & Paulanka, 2008, p. 2). In the U.S, some patients receive equal treatment in the health care facilities, but others receive unequal treatment because they are from diverse backgrounds. In the article, “Cultural Clues” Melissa Hansen focuses on the importance of culturally competent workforce- (nurses, technicians, and doctors) who can recognize cultural differences to allow effective communication with patients. The culturally competent health care workers also include the community health workers- (community health promoters, village health workers, and lay health advisers). In fact, the lack of understanding between the healthcare workers and patients is results in an estimated one-third of patients who do not adhere to prescribed medication regimens. This condition leads not only to serious complication and more hospitalizations, but also is costing the U.S. health system an estimated $100 billion to $290 billion every year (Hansen 22). Necessarily, the health care workforce needs to improve this state to reduce disparities.

Culture and values are standards that influence and shape human behaviors, decision making processes, personal relationships, and status of health and happiness. The United States has become a symbol of a multicultural society representing many different ethnicities and minority groups. As our culture continues to grow rapidly so is the necessity to increase awareness, understanding, and tolerance of these diverse groups. Business is not a ‘one size fits all’ kind of world, to be successful leaders must have to ability to connect to and communicate respectfully with their staff, colleagues, and customers. Sometimes leaders need to take a step back and look for potential areas of improvement, frequently these can be found surrounding cultural awareness. “Global relationships are particularly vulnerable to cultural mismatches. To ascertain a cultural fit between partners in global transactions, one needs cultural awareness.” (Siakas, & Siakas, 2015, pp 207 & 209). In the healthcare arena, there are opportunities to encounter and work with people “from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds to ensure delivery of culturally competent care” (El Amouri, & O 'Neill, 2014, p 135). Being a leader, rather than just a manager; involves ongoing self and situational evaluation; looking for areas of improvement as well as shoring up the strong points that will be openly shared with others.
For health care workers, cultural competency is important for obvious reasons. On a daily basis, healthcare professionals work with patients of a variety of cultures, and many work with team members who come from different cultures than their own. Medical and other healthcare professionals spend many years in school learning how and when to treat patients for giving symptoms, but teaching them to interact with patients currently falls on knowing the things that make up a person’s cultural identity. Cultural differences that exist between people, such as language, dress and traditions, and the way societies organize themselves, their conception of morality and religion, attitudes about illness and death and the way they interact with the environment. Cultural competence is important in health care because the patient outcome, patient readmissions, staff retention, and labor relations all determine the outcome of an organizations success. Diversity improves the effectiveness and productivity of the workforce. Disadvantages of ignoring cultural diversity can result in a loss of revenue for the business. Company growth will also be affected by ignoring cultural diversity. Steps an organization should take to face this challenge is to implement training that cover workforce diversities and keep an open dialogue among employees expressing concerns, differences, ideas, etc.
