The Importance Of Western Culture And Punjabi Culture

A constant struggle of incorporating western mentality and remaining true to my Punjabi culture has been at the root of many dilemmas throughout my life and has caused me to engender my own set of values, which reflect a unique blend of western culture and Punjabi culture. As a future marriage and family therapist who will be assessing a diverse population, I foresee this amalgamation becoming an issue when I receive clients who come from a similar background and have a certain expectation of what I should say, or when I receive clients who come from a different background and have different values than I do. If one is not consciously aware of these values and biases, then it is very likely that these concerns will impede the therapeutic relationship and the work of the therapist. For instance, Punjabi culture emphasizes parents sacrificing their own happiness for their children’s happiness, which can be seen via parents not getting a divorce for a child’s happiness. I have seen the latter occur many times, even in instances where the parents cannot stand one another. Growing up I understood this mentality, because I had witnessed my American friends going through turmoil when finding out their parents were getting a divorce. At the time, I believed that the parents were selfish, that they were not considering what this would do to their child. Additionally, my family had also pushed forth this value in our home, even in instances where my aunts were living with alcoholic
