Many characters in books show wisdom and love when they meet serious problems or crossroads especially when the problem and the crossroads relate to their family or their friends. Wisdom and love are great topics in literature, because almost every theme is related to wisdom or love in some way. Love helps characters to think more seriously and with more detail when they are facing serious problems or crossroads. Wisdom helps characters make better choices or decisions. In The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and That was Then, This is Now by S.E. Hinton, Scarecrow and Bryon showed wisdom and love when Scarecrow and Bryon influenced their friends and family by serious incidents which happened around them.
In The Wizard of Oz, the Scarecrow showed wisdom because he decided to escape from the Kalidahs, crossed the huge river, and saved Dorothy and friends from the crows’ attack. For example, Scarecrow gives an idea to make bridge with big tree to save Dorothy and her friend, including himself from Kalidahs’ attack. Scarecrow says, “Here is a great tree, standing close to the ditch. If the Tin Woodman can chop it down, so that it will fall to the other side, we can walk across it easily.” By this idea, Scarecrow saved himself and his friends. If he didn’t, maybe he and his friends would die. But because of his Idea, Dorothy and her friends saved their lives and could continue their journey to Emerald City.
