Coming into this class, I wasn't sure what to expect. Of course,I expected to be writing a lot but was unsure of the type of writing and the style. I was looking forward to writing challenging pieces that stretching me creatively as a writer. I wanted to explore how to express myself in my writing because it had been a long time since I'd written a creative essay. One of my main hopes for this class was challenging myself to become a better editor of my own papers. I often find it a tedious and laborious process to find and edit the grammatical errors in my papers. However, this is an important skill that I need to develop for my future as a successful writer.
Words are an essential part of everyone's life, from the time a baby is born words are encouraged to stimulate their growth because simply being able to say "milk" or "mama" provides the baby with a huge amount of power. In fact, they were even used to
The importance of college-level writing is a topic that is very much backed up and accompanied by facts and studies. Writing in the college-level is needed in order to master college work in any class. Basically all classes require you to more than likely submit some kind of research paper or essay. Writing for Learning to Improve Students’ Comprehension at the College Level by Fahad Alharbi as well as Luiza Costa Ribeiro, Writing Essays at College: Why it’s Important both go into detail on how important writing at this level is and all the skills learned for during and after college. As well on how you can benefit from them.
Having the writers workshop has helped me tremendously because the students not only are helping with any grammar and punctuation mistake but they are also giving me suggestions to fix my paper. I always look forward to the writer's workshop because they give me critical feedback letting me know what needs to be fixed. What I usually get suggested to fix is my
Over the years I have become very familiar with writing long papers, reading books and articles, and researching different topics. I can remember not knowing where to even start writing a paragraph in third grade to not knowing where to start writing a one-page paper in middle school. I finally got to high school and two to three-page essays was all I knew. In elementary I was already reading chapter books, and writing summaries for submission. By high school I was reading two books at a time. The only thing that was new to me beginning high school was research.
Professional scholars have their own perspective on what college level writing is and how it is done. A various number of scholars believe that college writing consists of well articulate writing skills and having the authority to make your work dynamic in every aspect. Well articulate writing skills consist of knowing how to explain yourself with legitimate grammar, and having the authority is knowing automatically how you are going to write, and having the ability to write coherently. Scholars like Elizabeth Wardle and Donald M. Murray have explained what college level writing is in their knowledge and how to distinguish those writing skills in your essay. College level writing in Elizabeth and Donald’s view consist of finding your identity.
When I first walked into Professor Roberts’s office, I was a little overwhelmed. Her desk was cluttered with papers from all her other classes. Cards filled the bulletin boards that past students wrote her. I was a bit ambivalent; I didn’t know what I was getting myself in to. Was the abundance of thank you cards supposed to be a way to tell me students respected her? Her sincere smile finally made me feel at ease. She could probably tell from my shaky voice and sweaty forehead that interviewing was not my thing. Professor Windy Roberts is a well-respected Spanish professor who teaches my Intermediate Spanish at the University of Minnesota Morris. Professor Roberts prefers content over grammar and mechanics and also wants her students to have control over the different verb tenses. I understand her preference because we are still learning about grammar, and through writing, we can practice those skills.
Writing was always hard for me, since my English was never my strongest suit. College Writing is giving the opportunity to learn to write better. With a total of seven essays that will be done in this class, I know my writing skills will improve drastically. Essay writing were never my favorite because it always took me a long time to complete one. I used to be always scared of writing Essays because of my English. I only started to get my confidence in writing essays in the College Writing class. I noticed that the more essays I wrote, the better I got. With every essay, I have gained new knowledge about different topics and myself. I recognized that in my first essay, Between the World and Me, by Ta -Nehisi Coates, my vocabulary was very limited. I always used the same words because I didn’t know any other words that I could use. To improve this matter, I decided to read more in my spare time. I came across many big words in the texts that I read and I decided to circle them. I them decided to guess the meaning of the words when it was used in the given sentence. I then looked up the words that I didn’t know and although it made my reading slower, I got more of an understanding of the new words that I was reading in the text. It shows that reading and writing goes hand in hand because you can’t improve your writing if you don’t read and expand your vocabulary and vice versa.
My first undergraduate level college writing class provided me with a great deal of knowledge not only about the multi-dimensional writer the class formed me into but also about the writer who I used to be through the various diverse assignments we completed this semester. My first essay of the semester was a personal essay about my experiences on a given day. At first, I found my first assignment somewhat challenging due to the struggle surrounding the goal of not sounding like I was just listing of my day. My goal was to be as descriptive as possible and persuade my audience into feeling like they went through my day with me rather than reading about it. Looking back onto the progression of our essays I now understand why the Personal Essay was our first. As writers we needed the basic tools of being able to write with descriptive power, active voice and structural correctness in order to excel in the next essays to follow. The first essay contributes to my future as well by engaging the importance of an active voice in writing which in turn provides a confidence for the author that will reflect in future works. The second essay over the course of the semester was the compare and contrast essay. The compare and contrast essay consist of closely examining the similarities and differences between two related podcasts and forming a clear thesis statement. This essay created a complex task for the writer in terms of organizational skills and ability to form a thesis based upon
High school did not prepare me for college. College requires students to develop a work ethic, as well as adapt to the use of textbooks, essays, assignments, and test. Typically, in high school my teachers gave me rubrics that were the blueprint of my assignments and a grading system that limited my potential because it taught me to do only enough to get by. High school teachers spent their time directing me on procedures instead of teaching critical thinking, which would be the reason later for my unpreparedness in college.
Even though writing is part of our daily lives, being able to put together an academic paper is not as simple as sending a text. Actual college writing can prove to be a lot more difficult and confusing if one does not know what exactly is needed to write a college paper. Writing An essay qualified as college material incorporates strong relation to the audience, knowing one’s identity and authority, and the process of the writing itself.
Prior to arriving at Berkeley, I initially had trouble with applying critical thinking skills into interpreting texts and providing meaningful analysis on my essays. Before I encountered a college-level English class in my academic career, I would only showcase minimal, simple explanations that were clearly apparent to the readers without providing any significant observations about the text. I interpreted critical thinking as a crucial, important element in not just English classes, but in any class that required writing essays and understanding the content the textbook. Since I had trouble with developing my critical thinking skills, it was hard for me to develop a strong thesis because like how critical thinking is important in any class one encounters in their academic career, a strong thesis is important because the entire baseline and foundation of a student’s essay revolves around the thesis as well as be able to provide evidence to back up one’s argument. Because these problems would constantly follow me around in any class I encountered, I felt an extreme sense of low confidence that I would not be able to advance as a critical thinker in advanced college classes. However, it was not until the College Writing R1A program thankfully gave me the opportunity to further develop my skills as a reader and a writer in my classes.
Our Senior year is the one that makes memories and major changes in our lives when we grow up and move on to bigger and more exciting things. One of the biggest changes I have seen in my growth this semester was the way my writing changed and evolved into a stronger element able to be used when heading to college. This course made my writing stronger which prepared me for college and for future jobs. This course is one I would recommend for the freshman to take to help them prepare for college writing requirements. The biggest changes I noticed in this course was taking out informal language, making stronger thesis statements and eliminating the wordiness in essays.
I learned the slang phrase “One and done” in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Draft this summer. For non-basketball fans, it simply means that aspiring basketball players will try to get themselves drafted in the NBA after completing only one year in college. During the NBA draft night, the player may or may not get drafted depending on if their skills are viewed by the managers and coaches enough to play in the professional level. Throughout my college writing experience, I have been a “One and done” kind of writer. In this case, it means turning in the first drafts of the papers I write without major revision, something that I regret not doing. Not only because of the not so great feedbacks and grades that I got but also because I knew that I could have done better but for some reasons I decided not to.
College writing has been a semester fill with different essays and ways of writing. Although, we have only written three essays during this entire semester (not including this one), it has helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Even though we did write essays, we also wrote many journal entries throughout the semester. By being able to express our creative thoughts out on paper not in an essay format was very beneficial to the course. Throughout this course I have had some easy parts and harder parts for sure, one being my grammar definitely needs some work. However, this course has helped shaped me as a writer.
