In this day and age, an increasing amount of employers are requiring a higher level of education in order to hire people. Having a degree allows adults to have multiple choices of when, where, and how they work. Because of this, college graduates have new and improved employment opportunities. In a recent study of young americans, 58% of college graduates and people with some college or associate's degree expressed being "very satisfied" with their jobs, compared to only 50% of high school graduates and a drastic 40% of people without a high school diploma. For many people, working at a job you are fond of is crucial for living a quality life. Having a degree aids in increasing the amount of choices when selecting a career path you will enjoy. Because of this, college graduates have lower poverty rates than ever before. The 2008 poverty rate for bachelor's degree holders was 4%,
Education, the money maker, is the most important thing anybody can go through with. It’s extremely difficult to get a good job these days and even more without education. The competition is tough and now bosses only want the best of the best, even if you have been with the company for an extended time. On the other hand, education lets you be more independent. However, a high school diploma is no longer sufficient.
Everyday we go to school to receive our education, but what is the purpose of education? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, “The Purpose of Education” and Frank O’Connor’s short story, “Christmas Morning,” both discuss what is the purpose of education. The purpose of education is to acknowledge not only one’s intelligence, but also one’s character, provide one with the ability to make decisions and achieve their goals.
In today's society, it is more difficult to get a job without having an education. McClellan talks about two different people in his essay, Voss and Galipeau, who were guaranteed a job with their company. When their company moved over seas they had to find new jobs. Voss had to get a college education to be able to get another job, and even with her college education she found it difficult. When she finally found a job, the job only paid $12.47 an hour, compared to her original job that paid $27 an hour. Galipeau had to take a part time job somewhere because he was too old to be starting a new career (McClellan 552-553). This is a perfect example as to how even with a company having promised them a solid job, more education was needed just to find another job that paid less. Additionally, even the jobs that require nothing more than a high school education do not pay well. There are also very few jobs that a person can get without additional education past high school. Those who don't even have a diploma may have an even harder time finding a job. According to the United States Department of Labor, "In May 2013, about 27 percent of all U.S. jobs were in occupations that typically require less education than a high school diploma for entry. These
For many years education in the United States has been taught the same way over and over again. It has put children through many years of boring lectures to learn something and eventually will be forgotten. In the Banking concept Freire gives his opinion on the traditional way students have learned for many years. He Calls it the Banking Concept of Education, it is when a student knows nothing and the teacher has to educate them with boring long lectures that will eventually be forgotten by the school year is over. This form of teaching has not really helped students succeed especially when they get to the college level. It has not let students think about what they are learning and think critically about everything they are learning. The banking concept way of teaching has only let students learn a ton of materials but not so much in depth because of a lack of time and too many topics to cover. Students today have been struggling to succeed in their future because of the banking concept, and some countries have already passed the education in the United States.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is projected to be highest for those without a diploma or GED. However, those that have a master’s degree will have the lowest unemployment rates. Also, the 2018 estimated median weekly income for people with a diploma or college degrees are as followed: less than a high school diploma, $471; high school diploma, $652; some college but no degree, $727; associate degree, $785; bachelor’s degree, $1,066; master’s degree, $1,300; doctoral degree, $1,624; and professional degree, $1,735. There is a big difference between those without a diploma and those who have earned a bachelor’s degree is very noticeable. For someone to graduate high school and earn a degree in a career that one enjoys can almost immediately change their lifestyle and enjoyment of life. I, myself would enjoy my job more if I made a weekly income of $785, I do not want to work 40+ hours and barely get by. Many youthful people already know what they would enjoy being and by going to college not only will they have a job promised because of the degree in hand but they income will remind them of all of their hard-work. There are a few jobs that require higher education that does not pay as much as it should, but the one that come to mind first are teachers. Four years should earn someone an income of $50,000+ and yet after all of the hard work put into their career, the under-pay, and appreciation they still put their heart into their classes. A positive attitude about one’s job will create a much better work place and one worth being part
Teachers are the subject in that they have knowledge that they then infer knowledge onto students. Students, in turn, are objects that receive, memorize, and repeat. The concept of banking prevents students from using their full intellectual capacity.
Employment rate for individuals that have a college education is going up, but the employment rate for those with a high school degree or less is in a decline. According to Education Corner, employment options for people who have a high school education is declining because their employers see them as a replaceable person that can be replaced at any time a stronger, more educated individual walks in the door and meets the requirements for the job, on the other hand, college graduates tend to have skills that make them more qualified for a broad range of employment options. The job market today is becoming more of a competition to receive a job than it was in previous years, in order to give yourself the leading edge you must understand the importance of a college education.
But not every student is the same. Some students may find it easier to use the “banking” concept for their way of learning. It all depends on which learning environment the student is more comfortable in. Also, I believe that it depends on which type of class the student is taking. From my experiences, I have noticed that both methods have worked for retaining the necessary knowledge, but each method is best used for different subjects. For more of the memorization type classes, like math and history, I would learn more from the banking concept because those classes are mostly about remembering and memorizing certain formulas and dates in history. Any other way of remembering those math formulas and history dates wouldn’t be as effective. Even as young children we would learn the alphabet and words through memorization. At that young age the children are not mature enough to go through learning by the problem-posing method, they need to use the banking concept. But as for the subjects like the physical sciences, students would benefit more from the problem-posing method. Being involved and actually experiencing how the sciences work is much more beneficial than being lectured on the information.
Freire has made valid points as to why the banking concept of education can be poor at times. Freire expresses the attitudes and practices of society within the banking concept of education and lists that the teachers know everything and the students know nothing (319). When my teacher messed up halfway through solving the equation and I caught the mistake should I have not said anything because teachers know everything, right? In reality people make mistakes as do teachers.
To avoid overlearning, students should take breaks after reviewing content. Some educators believe that method of learning is an effective way to prolong long term retention and is common in schools. For example, assignments for mathematics courses include similar problems, leading students to overlearn.
Pablo Freire talks about the problem solving method vs the banking concept in his essay. Under the banking concept he says, students are just empty capsules being filled by anything their instructors tells them. Freier does not agree with this learning technique. He is against the idea that we as students are just empty vessels. The banking concept is making us use our brain in a way that is totally unnecessary. The information we are given is stored only to be used once or never again. The problem solving method is the complete opposite. It allows students to broaden their minds. It lets us express what we already know, what questions we might have, and allows us to get answers. As said in the introduction paragraph, literate arts are used as a
Education has existed throughout history in one form or another. The process of passing down accumulated information from one generation to the next has been present in every human society, past and present. From the young listening to the stories of the elders around the hearths of the ancient world, to pupils being instructed in the alphabet in a one room schoolhouse on the American frontier, to the present day online teaching sessions; the tradition of teaching and learning has been a constant in the ever changing world. Education has been and continues to be used for many purposes, chief among them being the creation of an educated citizenry, the empowerment of that citizenry, and improvement of the
In almost every culture and in all parts of the world, getting an education is valuable to a person’s future. But what is it that makes education so valuable? What is the purpose of an education starting from the early stages of a child’s development into adolescents, and from adolescents into adulthood?
Education is one of the most essential necessities of a personal life because without education, we would not have a brighter future. In two essays “Learning to Read and Write” and “A Homemade Education”, Malcolm and Douglass describe what they have gone through in order to become more successful in their pursuits in life. While Malcolm X lived part of his life in prison, he spent his time writing numerous definitions from a dictionary amongst the walls and tables. The elements of the dictionary motivated him to not only become a free man, but a well educated one at that. Douglass, who also taught himself, began his life in slavery. But after a series of attempts, he escapes from slavery and pursues into his
