Growing up in school, students are constantly reminded that a college education is necessary to make a decent salary. Over the years, it has become evident to many young adults that this statement is indeed true. However, as the need for jobs increases, so does the necessity of being more competitive in a work field. Since our generation has grown up knowing that graduating from college is a necessity, a college education is no longer enough to be competitive in the job market; therefore, our generation has given birth to a new requirement to find the right job after college. Not only are these programs beneficial for interns, but for employers as well. Companies can be sure that interns are dedicated and truly interested in the field that they are working in. There are many people who are currently working in fields where they never thought they would work. Their plans in life didn’t work out the way they wanted and they are now living under what they once labeled “Plan B”. A good example of this can be found in a chapter from the book To Become a Teacher. “When I asked why he wanted to teach and, more specifically, why he wanted to teach young children, the young man quickly responded. “Oh, I’ve always heard that its good to pick up some teaching credits. The early childhood education program looked doable [easy enough, I quickly interpreted] with my engineering courses. Anyway, if all else fails,” he continued, “I could always fall back on teaching.”... How I wish that this young man’s story was an exception...” 5 Internships are a way to prevent situations like these. Employers can see who really wants to work in a department and if they can’t find anyone fit for the job, they can at least see who has the potential and who doesn 't. A person who doesn’t intern after college is truly missing out on a chance to take his career on a test-run. Internships are indeed excellent and rewarding ways to gain hands-on experience. Also a superior chance to experience what I will be doing in those professions, and how to acquire it. My professional success will be achieved with the work I put into a degree towards my desired field, and the experiences I gather as I work towards that degree. The internship program will provide me with a chance to see the real world applications and impacts I will be making, and how to successfully fulfill my role in these jobs before I even graduate.

Finding previous relevant research that correlates with my topic was very difficult, because not a lot of studies have been conducted with respect to interns and internship effects., However, with using these keywords: legal setting, internships, interns, motivation. I was able to find three relevant articles that some how were relevant with the proposed study that I wanted to conduct.

The world is filled with different kinds of people who can learn information in different ways. Many people can learn simply through being taught in a traditional classroom with the help from textbooks. Of course, there are many other ways to learn new material. However, I strongly feel that actually observing work and seeing all the angles of work being performed can be more beneficial to a person. Internships can help people or students see and learn what they could not in a traditional class setting. They can also give students a better understanding of what their future profession might involve. It is very difficult to learn concepts until a person is able to see or experience them for his or herself. I chose to undergo an internship at a chiropractic clinic because chiropractic is the profession that I am striving to reach in my future.

The internship took a different perspective, it was a collaborative effort that brought people of various disciplines together to accomplish a greater task. I worked with a collaborative of students with majors ranging from film and geography to computer science and mechanical engineers. An internship is no good if you do not make it work. Thus making the internship work for you is very important. To start out the student must want to direct their full attention to the internship because the internship is pretty much starting out their future. First impressions are usually suppose to be good so a student should not go into an internship thinking that it is going to be easy and that they can just blow through it. Internships should be beneficial for the students and the employer’s. The internship program coordinator should look for a few things when they are picking out the companies in which they are going to send their students to learn and gain experience. First off the firm in which you might be thinking about going into for an intern must have work for you to do. Sitting behind a desk all day staring out the window will not teach you anything. It also helps out when there are positive people surrounding the student intern. “For an internship to work, the firm’s principals must be available to supervise and teach.”(Berger 30) The student intern will usually have lots of questions and if there are good people around the intern to answer his or her questions and correct their mistakes then the internship will be quite beneficial.
Typically, internships are professional experiences that students participate in to gain professional skills and experiences. In this particular experience at Accounting Firm X I did in fact gain substantial professional skill while participating in new and challenging experiences. Internships allow in- class material to come to life in a practical manner. My internship did do this but not in a way that I had planned.
