THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDIVIDUAL
Physical and health education is a significant aspect of a wholesome education around the world. It concerns itself with the total well-being of the individual, encompassing physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual beliefs. There are three areas within Health Education namely health instruction, the provision of health services and environmental health. It also involves the development of an individual, group, institutional, community as well as systemic strategies to improve health knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviour. The main aim of health education is to positively inculcate a health savvy attitude in individuals as well as communities no matter how the environment or working conditions are so that it does not have an adverse influence on their health. Health education is important because it further enhances the health status of individuals, families, communities, states and hence the entire nation.
Health education indefinitely improves the quality of life for many people as well as contributes to the reduction of premature deaths. Indirectly, health education reduces the costs (both financial and human) incurred for medical facilities, insurances. The main cause of ill-health in this country and elsewhere is highly due to ignorance of simple health rules such as hygiene or of indifference to their practical application. Health
It is the same as playtime but it will focus more on exercising. Physical education will teach children the importance of exercising and staying healthy throughout their life time. Playing is important for children because they learn capabilities of the body and how it moves (Sanders & Graham, 1995). Exercising and learning about the body interests children, anything that has nothing to do with writing and reading will interest children. Children will learn a lot and fast if it interests
Physical Development – This area is only split into two different aspects. The first one is ‘moving and handling’, this means that children must be able to show control and confidence in large and small movements. The second aspect is ‘health and self-care’, this means that children must know how important it is to stay healthy and do regular exercise.
But over the past few decades, the definititon and concept of health has evolved to encompass more elements than just the physical well-being of a person. This is partly attributed to various researches and studies that have taken place around the world in the last 60 years. Already in 1948, the World Health Organization declared that health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not
Physical literacy is defined as, “‘the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.’ The International Physical Literacy Association, May 2014” (“Physical Literacy”, 2017). Another understanding of physical literacy is, it is “the cornerstone of both participation and excellence in physical activity and sport.
The purpose of health education is to positively persuade the health behavior of individuals and committees as well as living and working conditions that influence their health. Health education is the development of individual group, community, and systemic strategies to improve health knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behavior. Health education is a social science that draws from the biological, environmental, physical, and mental sciences to promote health and prevent disease disability and premature death through education driven voluntary behavior change activities.
Physical education is a vital part of education in schools and has changed significantly over many years and generations to become what it has now from the 1992 curriculum (Accessed at http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1992/603/contents/made. Last accessed 13/03/2011) to the newly introduced 2008 curriculum. It has changed in many ways
The definition of health and illness varies across societies due to their differing cultural, social and ethnic beliefs. The description associated with health and illness has been socially constructed so that the view of a medical profession is the most accurate. There is a general conception to think of health habits such as exercise and consuming a healthy diet when the terms health and illness are mentioned. However it is thought that the conditions that determine health changes are heavily based on one’s social conditions as it is seen that diseases occur in patterns. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) “health is a complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.” Social
Physical development includes providing opportunities for young children to be physically active and interactive, also to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. Children must also be taught the importance of physical activity and also the importance of having a healthy diet.
Health literacy affects everyone. In life, everyone wants to take care of their health and stay healthy. Health literacy is a very important skill needed by everyone to be able to find, understand and use health care information. Also health literacy is not only needed when someone goes to visit a doctor, but it is also very essential for taking care of you every day. Health literacy helps to protect your health by preventing the health problems from proper understanding of the disease and treatment plan. It also helps to better manage the health related problems and unexpected situations.
In order to promote independence and participation of users of health and social care it is important to provide them education which is termed as patient education which is also considered to be an important thing in order to enhance the safety as well as the satisfaction. It is very helpful in order to produce better outcomes and also improve the quality of care.
The World Health Organisation defined health: “State of complete physical and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity” (WHO, 1946 p.100). Many factors influence health such as family traits, behaviours, access to quality healthcare and environment (quality of air, bad/good water and housing conditions) (WHO, 1946). The holistic view of health combines the mind (mental), body (physical), emotional and spiritual elements to a person (Ewes & Simnett, 2003).
Health and Physical Education provides learning opportunities for students to make meaning of and apply the knowledge and skills related to health and movement. They learn movement skills through physical education. These skills enable them to develop personal, interpersonal, behavioural, cognitive and social skills. Movement skills also encourage students for ongoing participation across their lifespan which leads to positive health outcomes (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2012). According to UNESCO (1999), learning to move and enjoying the freedom of movement is a human right (as cited in ACARA, 2012). HPE promotes movement skills which are important part of daily life to enhance active living. The content of curriculum focuses on developing knowledge and understanding about how body moves
I believe that physical education and health give a unique opportunity to the students to contribute to the overall well-being and student’s development. As a teacher I believe that the most important things that I can teach my students is a love to be physically active because i believe that physical ability will affect every aspect of student’s life including their mental health, academic achievement, self-esteem, social competency and ability to function well in any environment. The purpose of physical education and health class is to provide the concepts of health and skill related fitness in order to create the student with continuous physically active that can promote the development of life long movers. Physical education and health
Health is man perceiving oneself at his or her optimal level of functioning. Health can be achieved even in a diseased state by assisting clients to achieve the highest perceived state of health as possible. Health is a direct result of environmental factors and health teaching and promotion. It is important to incorporate the teaching process and recognize the different domains of learning in order to achieve the most effective, positive behavioral changes. Since man is in constant interaction with his environment, and each client has different beliefs, cultures and values, health promotion and teaching are important for man to achieve his or her optimal level of functioning.
