Fatal diseases have been the cause of death for a large percent of the human race. About 5.8 million Americans have heart failure, 670,000 people are diagnosed with it each year, 23.6 million have diabetes, and one million live with Parkinson’s disease (Watson, Stephanie, and Craig Freudenrich, Ph.D). Diseases such as above kill off important cells that reproduce rapidly to help the body function normally. Well, what alternatives does one have to turn to when the time clock runs out for all cells, resulting in death. Stem cell usage is a second chance given that doesn’t set death as an essential from these fatal diseases. Once an egg cell is fertilized by a sperm, it will divide and become an embryo(Watson, Stephanie, and Craig Freudenrich, Ph.D). The embryo has to be at least four or five days old to produce stem cells. The embryo then, “can give rise to an entire organism consisting of hundreds of different kinds of cells“ (Panno, Joseph). These different kind of cells can be used for various types of reasons in the human body. Because of this versatility, embryonic stem cells have the highest potential for use to regenerate or repair diseased tissue and organs in people(Mayo Clinic). Two ways scientist get embryos are from a process called in vitro fertilization, and therapeutic cloning. Vitro fertilization is when a sperm and egg are fertilized in a culture dish then implanted in the female. This technique is used mostly for women who can not get impregnated on their own. However, more embryos are made than can be implanted(Watson, Stephanie, and Craig Freudenrich, Ph.D) in the process. Which are no longer wanted or needed. The unused embryos are then frozen, and usually donated by couples for stem cell research. The second way scientist get embryos is from therapeutic cloning. This process occurs when a cell from a diseased patient merges with an egg that is donated. The steps taken to therapeutic cloning is first the nucleus of the donor is removed from the egg.
