Disaster risk reduction is a systematic approach in recognizing and reducing the risks of disasters. According to the UNISDR or the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, “The conceptual framework of elements considered with the possibilities to minimize vulnerabilities and disaster risks throughout the society, to avoid or to limit the adverse impacts of hazards, within the broad context of sustainable development.” The capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Manama is where the most of the commercial centers, government departments and other service centers are located. They are now currently building systems of the public sector and the parliament, supports social strategies, and ensures the sustainable use of energy and the environment. According to a source, the Government of Bahrain and the UNDP has been a consistent partner working across sectors to ensure inclusive and sustainable development. They’ve been working together to prioritize and create strategies for the betterment of the nation’s development and economic status. The Kingdom of Bahrain is closely monitoring and reporting on the implementation of HFA. They have set up national coordination mechanisms with other Middle East countries and have been working with United Nation’s Development Program and the World Bank regarding the hazard mapping and risk assessment. Last May 2009, The Middle East has its fair share of natural disasters, but the idea of disaster risk reduction is new, and often difficult to convince the government that funding the program would produce positive effects and results. Expeditious economic and urban development has also concentrated people in hazardous cities, wherein small effort has gone into boosting risk-reducing capacities.
