Therapy is an activity which takes place when someone who has problems allows another person to enter into a particular kind of relationship with them. Some clients may precede further though therapy in a shorter space of time whereas other clients may not fully accept or commit to the therapy initially, it is vital that continued support is given to the client throughout this process. The importance of developing self awareness is essential for counselling psychologists as it provides the key to personal growth and self development (BPS, 2006). Parker (1999) argues that all counsellors should be self aware to guard against therapeutic ineffectiveness and to prevent damaging clients. Working with clients may present many personal challenges but can also be used as an opportunity to assess personal feelings and thoughts whilst relating to others. It is important for the counsellor to remain emotionally detached from the situation and the relationship that has been developed with the client.
