The Influence Of Dr. Seuss's Literature In My Life

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”(Dr. Seuss, the Lorax) The childhood of thousands of adults and children alike were all made memorable because of one man. Theodor Seuss Geisel. His use of words and depictions, although with hidden messages, of daily life has molded the imagination of every child.

Early in 1941, a result of World War II, Theodor Seuss Geisel began developing political cartoons for the liberal publication, PM Magazine. Being too old for the draft, Seuss aided the military by making animated training films and illustrated propaganda posters for the Department of Treasury and the War Production Board. This series of events, led Seuss to not write another children’s book for seven years. As a Result of wearing multiple hats, do we find that Seuss’ career as a political cartoonist effects the messages given in his children’s literature?

Dr. Seuss’ real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel. He was born March 2, 1904, in a small town named Springfield, Massachusetts. His parents were Theodor Robert Geisel and Henrietta Seuss Geisel. He gives his mom credit today for his love of rhymes and being able to rhyme so well. He lived a happy childhood with his parents and his sister and even used some of those memories in his books (Horton hears a Who and I heard it on Mulberry street).

Even though Dr. Seuss was voted “least likely to succeed” (“Grahame-Smith” 14) in college he quickly proved everyone wrong. He was widely known for his great books written for children. “Many of his books were initially composed of his sketches”(“Dr. Seuss” St. James). Dr. Seuss successfully wrote and illustrated sixty books for children (“Dr. Seuss” Biography). Dr. Seuss was able to impact the lives of many people with his constant hard work and creativity.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, MA to German immigrant parents (Morgan & Morgan, 1995). His parents immigrated just after the end of WWI, and he was bullied in school for being a German immigrant (Morgan & Morgan, 1995). Seuss’ care for minority rights and his strong voice against isolationism during WWII were likely influenced by this experience as a child. The majority of his career would be involving politics in one form or another, and even pervaded the messages in his children’s books (Morgan & Morgan, 1995). His second wife, Audrey Stone Dimond-Geisel, would continue his work in children’s novels and movies after his death, but instilled more moral lessons,

“ I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them Sam-I-Am.” These famous words not only started my childhood but many children’s childhood. Theodore Seuss Geisel or most commonly known as Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1994 and from there the world was changed. Theodore Geisel is a charismatic man who put his lively personality into his fun and lighthearted books like Green Eggs and Ham, The classic Cat in the Hat, and the iconic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Although he is most famous as an author of children’s books, Geisel was also a political cartoonist, advertisement designer, and film director (Kaplan). He used the power of imagination to produce unforgettable children’s books and helped solve the problem of illiteracy among America’s children. By using his experiences in life as a foundation for most of his books, Theodor Geisel created a unique writing style that incorporated various elements and techniques, enabling his books to appeal to people of all ages.

We all know him as Dr. Seuss, but who was Dr. Seuss really. Well, Theodor Seuss Geisel was an author, cartoonist, artist, animator, book publisher and poet. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts where a Dr. Suess Museum is now open, along with tours of his childhood home.

Dr. Seuss I took an unconventional approach in the topic I chose for my reading assignment – whereas most groups selected single novels, my partner and I opted to read a collection of short stories by none other than the notorious Dr. Seuss. Were I writing this essay on a “normal” book, I would be able to pose a question about the book itself and answer it in an ordinary sort of way. However, given the subject matter I have chosen, an essay on an individual book, though possible, would be a very tricky thing to do. It would be wiser, and probably easier, to respond to the man himself. My decision to respond to the man himself makes many more choices – what facet of Dr. Seuss shall I ask myself questions about? Our overall the unit of study for writers workshop is making our writing interesting. We are also incorporating an author study of Dr. Seuss. Learning different techniques to make our writing interesting is important for young writers. Not only does it make their writing better, but it also inspires them to use their creativity. We decided to do an author study on Dr. Seuss because he has great examples of creative writing. We were able to use many of his books as examples for each of the strategies we worked on.

Is Dr. Seuss Considered an Artist? Imagine you were in Dr. Seuss’s shoes. You are one of the most famous artists in the world. Being able to be recognized as a child’s hero, having creativity, and being imaginable.

With children stories that hold deeper insight than most would expect to find in children books to stories that are pure nonsensical like Green Eggs and Ham that came from a bet (Biography). Dr. Seuss’s literary elements in his seemingly innocent works hold deeper meaning behind them and often paralleling to the events that were happening during his lifetime, like his book Yertle the Turtle.
