The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Feminism as the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. Feminism has become the obsession of American society in recent years while other countries like Iceland and Norway have taken legal action to guarantee gender equality. With this information, Americans constantly ask themselves, why is achieving a feminist society almost impossible for America? Unfortunately, Puritanism has altered American history and caused a diversion between the sexes in modern society. The Puritans created strict, domestic social norms that were imperative to obey. These gender roles implemented on men and women have altered American mindsets to these specific gender roles we are supposed to follow. Without the influence of Puritanism, a complete feminist society would be achievable in America’s modern day society. The Puritan influence has brainwashed Americans into thinking that men are superior over women. This idea has brought up issues involving the role of a women in society. The Puritans believed that women were only to maintain household order, encourage faith and moral growth and, most importantly, to be subordinate to men. (Gender and Sexuality in Colonial America) This belief has unfortunately not left the minds of men who believe they hold all the power. Men have taken advantage of women by using sexual harassment as their weapon. Recently, Harvey Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment against his clients.
