The popularity of vampires in films has increased dramatically over the past decade or so. Films such as Van Helsing, Fright night and Twilight have all paved the way for a new type of vampire that appeals to the audience for several different reasons. Leaving a lot of the traditional vampire traits behind, these films have created a new attractive vampire and in the case of twilight, a vampire that has feelings and emotions and does not want to drink human blood. These more modern vampires are not only more appealing to the viewer; they are also signifiers of the modern culture in which we live in today.

In Van Helsing, the three brides of Dracula are strikingly beautiful women and Jerry the vampire in Fright Night is very handsome, and this fact is remarked by the female characters in the film on several occasions. The fact that these new modern vampires are seen as very sexual and extremely attractive individuals shows that the modern audience of the 21st century needs to be visually stimulated in more ways than one. The saying ‘sex sells’ does indeed apply here. Along with being stimulated visually by the camera effects of these movies, audiences like looking at people who are attractive. This attractiveness adds to the appeal of vampires even more as they are becoming sexier, more enticing and even more alluring.
Taking the aforementioned points into account, another vampire phenomenon which has hit the 21st century must be discussed. The Twilight Saga, which shows vampires in almost a completely different light, has swept across the world and has gathered a very strong and loyal fan base. In Twilight, vampires are seen to have feelings and emotion, and they also want to abstain from drinking human blood, well the majority do. Here, vampires are stepping away from the traditional horror/fantasy/adventure genre and are stepping closer to the romance
