The Influence Of Violence In America

I strongly believe that America has a culture of violence. Just think; since 1966, a whopping 889 people have died during mass shootings. In 2015, there was over 25,000 gun related injuries in America. As of yesterday, 776 people have been shot and killed by police this year. Although many of these casualties were not innocent people, there was numerous innocent people who were killed this year who did not deserve it.

Violence takes a toll on everyone and can cause a strain on not only a person’s mental health, but their physical health, also. Because nothing ever seems to get done for the prevention of violence, those in communities affected become tired and weary, putting a strain on their health, due to the stress of this violence. There is an increase of paying taxes, stemming from vandalism of neighborhoods, stealing from homes and stores. Because of this, more law enforcement officers or guards have to be brought in to assist in the prevention of crime. There are those who lose hope, because no matter how much they try to create a better environment, nothing seems work. On the other hand, there are those who have hope and will do anything in their power to assist in the fight against violence.

Violence is a critical thing people think is a solution to a problem, but it’s not. Violence leads to people getting severally hurt it many cases. People tend to fight each other to release their anger they have against that person. People are willing to conflict the most pain to feel satisfied, Which causes others to get hurt or even hospitalized many times. Also nothing good comes out of creating violence in any situation. People are to busy wasting their time trying to fight someone, when they can be doing something better and more productive. Violence has been around for centuries; the first documented act of violence that comes to my mind is the story of Cain and Abel, where Cain murders Abel with a rock because he is jealous. As well as commending wars in the name of peace. Society has been saturating our children in violent acts, through television, movies and games. Thus creating a culture that popularizes violence, making it appear sensational. Furthermore, the constant media reports on violent crime sensationalize these acts.

The influence of mass media has progressively increased in American society, but can the media have effects beyond mere entertainment and impartial information? American culture has become saturated with online news reports, social media, and media entertainment. Technology has become a major factor in America’s social environment. Much of the information gained from digital sources involves or portrays violence, and many social scientists have concluded that exposure to these portrayals may influence some individuals to behave violently. There is evidence that consistent exposure to violence can lead audience members to accept violence as normative, and adopt the behavior into their own lives (Surette, 2013, p. 393). Other researchers support the theory that the benefit of using the media to fight violence outweighs any negative effect from it (Flexon, 2009, p. 608). Understanding violence is a complex, multi-faceted process, and all of these viewpoints must be acknowledged in order to understand the relationship between violent behavior in the media and violent behavior in individuals.

Violence is something that has been in human culture for a long time. From Colonization times to the founding of America, violence has been displayed and accepted in the process. For example, When Europeans started to colonize America, violence towards Native Americans was used and accepted in order to achieve success. Violent methods have been regularly used in order for people and countries to achieve higher success in what they seek. In protecting a nation from other threats, violence has been the accepted way to handle disputes between nations through war. Through war from past history, violence is nothing new to us. Violence has always been a means to solving disputes. Disputes are something common humans have dealt with when conflicts arise between one another. With the desensitization problem continuing to grow, many people are beginning to be unsure what violence truly is. As stated, there are various ways in which violence can be portrayed. In recent times, much of the violence society is exposed to comes from new media. This can be seen in almost all aspects: news, television, movies, social media, video games, the internet, marketing, and much more. With this over exposure comes a desensitization that cannot be ignored.
