Literary Analysis Outline I think the authors of the short story "The Interloper" and the chapter two of the book "Live To Tell" make the use of suspense in their stories to have the reader get a good story by giving him/her a surprising ending in each of the stories which is going to make them read more of their wonderful great work. Suspense in the story "The Interloper" makes it have a surprising ending. There is a part of the story where there are two enemies together in the woods with no one to help them: "And each prayed a private prayer that his men might be the first to arrive" (Saki 4). They both were scared and silently praying for their men to come help them know that they are out in the forest hurt and unable to move, I consider …show more content…
ng towards them and they were finally going to get helped and out of those woods alive, but suddenly they realize that it's not people who were going towards them, this is when suspense comes in action because Ulrich gave a sudden pause and that makes you wonder …show more content…
The story has a part where Victoria has these tranquilizer tablets, she's holding them firmly in her hand then she says "I creep into the hallway of my now silent home, already terrified of what I might find" (Lisa Gardener 18) She is being silently in her own house waiting for a terrifying act from this person that is trying to kill her. This is suspense because it makes the reader wonder is he going to kill her? Why does he want to kill her? Why doesn't she call the police? And what mostly the reader wonders is who is this person that wants to kill her? It just makes the reader want to get to the end and find out all these questions. At the end of the story he has fallen asleep with these tranquilizer tables that she has given him and meanwhile she's stroking her fingers along his cheeks and she asks to her self "I wonder if tonight will be the night he will finally kill me." Here is where suspense comes up again and makes the reader wonder even more who is this person that even though he tried to kill her she's stroking her fingers along his cheeks? Well this question is answered at the end when The author finally reveals it to the reader when Victoria says "Meet Evan, my son." "He is eight years old" (Lisa Gardener 21). Know that gives the reader a surprising ending of the story because who would of imagined that
The night is crisp and black as the moon lets off an eerie glow, leaves rustle and fall somewhere in the distance. A silhouette dwarfs the blackberry bush in the corner as one’s footsteps refrain, they move closer; you run. Suspense is a state of tension and anxiety which was used in the sentence above and is common in books and short stories. In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W Jacobs suspense is created in a variety of ways. Jacobs demonstrates this by using foreshadowing, conflict and surprise endings.
The development of the characters personalities helped to create suspense. With the development of Jeanine’s character it created suspense by making her attacks feared. Also she was feared because of the simulations, which could make people who were affected commit suicide, which also built the suspense with the fact that they needed to stop
By: Lucas Armstrong Ulrich gave his best effort to grab his gun. After struggling for a few seconds he finally hooks the edge of the firearm onto the button of his leather jacket.
The story opens by introducing Ulrich von Gradwitz. Ulrich’s grandfather had a famous lawsuit which created a feud between the neighbors. It later grew to a personal feud between Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. “;if their was a man in the world whom he detested and wished ill to, it was Georg Znaeym,”(Saki 83). Ulrich is in the woods waiting for some beast to come within range of his vision. Ulrich later became face to face with his biggest enemy, Georg Znaeym. “Each had a rifle in his hand, each had hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind.”(Saki 83). A beech tree had fallen on top of Ulrich and Georg and they were stuck underneath it. “ His heavy shooting boots have saved his feet from being crushed to pieces,” (Saki 84) Ulrich offers to become friends with Georg and their feud disappeared. Saki’s purpose was to make sure to get to know someone
* The author creates suspense by starting with the slow beginning and then making the story faster and more attention-grabbing. The author cleverly manipulates readers sense of disbelief by eliminating the possibility of police help or parental understanding. The author reveals the serial killer to the reader at the end of the story. By that time Duncan keeps searching him. Author slowly reveals the clues out of the lost journal of serial killer to make readers focus in the story. Also with the slowly
Ambrose Bierce uses suspense when writing the story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” which keeps the reader on the edge of their seat and allows Bierce to control the mood and tempo of the story. The story happens on a bridge where a man is being hanged by the union army. The details of the hanging are explained in part one. In part two it is explained who the main character is Peyton Farquhar and how he was tricked into attempting to burn down a bridge. After that in part three it shows the events preceding the death of Farquhar and the exaggerated images that follow until it is exclaimed in the end of the story that Farquhar has died. and Bierce uses multiple methods to create suspense, including the story structure, plot details, and imagery.
The suspense in Shirley Jackson's short story makes readers feel like every character could be evil; just even the mood and atmosphere of the story has a suspenseful feel to it. The pace creates such anticipation that grasps the reader's attention. For example, She creates suspense through Miss Strangeworth's thoughts and actions instead of using her words. For example "She went into the light sitting room...
In The Interlopers story there was two guys that don’t like each other. They threatened one another. If the other one comes on the other men’s property, he will kill him. At one point they met each other in the forest and they got stuck undeath something together. The one dude was being nice and other dude wasn't really accepting his kindness.
Suspense is very important in the story. It draws readers in and keeps not only the reader alert and alive, but it keeps the story alive as well. Suspense is developed when Whitney and Rainsford discuss the supposedly dreaded island that Rainsford ends up having to swim to after falling into the water. Suspense is sustained throughout the story when one mysterious event leads to another. The role that chance plays in the story is significant.
The short story “The Interlopers” by Saki demonstrates the ironic aura of man vs. nature, and man vs. man. Hector Hugh Munro, pen named Saki, was one of the most popular short story writers during the pre-World War I British literature era. He wrote many stories and is often referred to as a highly under rated author for British literature. His war experiences were apparent in the novellas that he wrote, and often gave readers a gloomy, disturbed feeling. Other stories by Saki include: “Gabriel-Ernest”, “The Toys of Peace”, and “The Storyteller”. These short stories specifically illustrate horror, and the advantage of living life outside of the box. The three predominant literary techniques in Saki’s “The Interlopers”
Suspense is a detail that many horror writer use to catch the attention of many readers and keep them holding on till the end. Just as W.F. Harvey does when creating suspense in his story August Heat. Mr. Harvey used three methods to create his suspense for his story, foreshadowing, withholding information, and reversal. With these three methods he is able to make the reader feel like, “ We may even hold our breath without realizing it as we read on eagerly to find out how the story ends”(Source 1).
Suspense is a key factor in this story because it keeps the audience interested due to the level of high tension and anxiety that arises frequently. Foreshadowing was also present in this film to provide hints to what is later going to occur in the plotline, for example Grace (Mother) tells her daughter to “stop breathing like that” even though it is not her causing the annoyance, the breathing only gets louder and Grace screams “stop breathing!” This is a subtle reference to the day Grace went mad suffocating her children, causing them to “stop
Suspense is created by authors with a technique called, characterizing anxiety and fear. When authors use this technique they describe what a character is doing to portray fear. This advances in the reader’s curiosity. For instance, in the “ The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, The White family is given a magical monkey’s paw that grants three wishes to Mr. White. His first wish results in their son’s death. Mrs. White forced Mr. White to bring their son back to life with the magical monkey’s paw; Mr. White knew this couldn’t be good and wanted to wish his son away so “ [he] was on his hands and knees groping
The author wrote this story as a literary genius. There is an extreme level of suspense that leaves you wanting
It is quiet except for the chirping of crickets. A glut of eerie looking trees is the only thing in sight. Once you think you are safe, a figure appears in the distance, followed by the sound of feet in the snow. Someone found you. Who could it be? Will they take your side? This is suspense. Suspense fills the mind with questions and makes the reader wonder what is going to occur next. It is a little difficult to understand exactly what suspense is, but it is easier if thought about using metaphorical thinking. Metaphorical thinking is the connection of a tangible word and an intangible word to create one statement. In “The Tell Tale Heart,” “The Interlopers,” and “The Monkey’s Paw,” suspense is clearly evident, as the reader experiences an on-the-edge feeling, and feels compelled to read more. “The Tell Tale Heart,” by Edgar Allan Poe, is a short story where the reader watches the psychotic narrator carry out a plan to kill an old man he knows. The suspense in this story comes from the anticipation of the murder and when he starts to hallucinate as he speaks to the police after the murder has taken place. “The Interlopers,” by Saki, is a short story taking place in the Carpathians about two men named Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym who take part in a lifelong feud over ownership of the land they live on. Suspense occurs in this story when the two men are face to face, preparing to kill each other, and when they are trying to see who has come to their aid. “The Monkey’s
