Table tennis is characterized by numerous rules that govern how the game should be played. The game is mainly characterized by exceptionally fast reactions thereby making rules quite necessary. Players must allow the ball to bounce once on their side of the court before returning it to the opposite end. The initial serve is, however, exempted from this requirement. Points are scored if a team fails to keep the ball in play. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) instituted some key changes in the rules of the game following the 2000 Olympics games, which were held in Sidney, Australia. The amendments were mainly aimed at enhancing the game’s viability as a spectator sport that could be televised. Among the new changes was the increasing of the ball’s diameter to 40 millimeters. Soon thereafter, the ITTF changed the game’s scoring system from 21-point to 11-point system (International Table Tennis Federation, 2014). The serve rotation was also brought down from five points to two. Soon thereafter, the global federation of the game changed the rules and effectively prohibited players from hiding balls during service. In keeping with the sport’s spirit of fairness, the rules cushions opponents from being caught by surprise. Rules require that the ball must be tossed a minimum of 16 centimeters in the air before being served. There are rules governing the course of events during a match including which team takes the first serve. In order to highlight the numerous
One of my proudest achievements is joining the Varsity Tennis team. A lot of people told me that learning to play tennis at an advanced level within a year was impossible, but I payed them no heed and went to the park every day to practice. It was a rigorous year of tennis, but the key to success for me was with stubborn determination. I got blisters, callouses, and a couple of injuries, but all of my hard work paid off when I saw my name on the list.
It’s not merely a smaller version of tennis, however, as certain rules make it stand out, such as players are not allowed to approach the net – an area called “the kitchen” – unless the ball drops there first. Another important rule is the first player or team – many people play doubles – reaches 11 points. They must win by two.
Limb length has a significant role to play in the success of the tennis serve which can evidently be seen in that over the last few decades the sport of tennis has had few professional players that are shorter than 180cm (McLester & St.Pierre, 2008, p 240).
It was my freshman year when I first found out how much of an impact a tennis captain can make on a fellow player. I had just lost one of the first challenge matches I'd ever have and I was absolutely devastated. It was against a girl that completely destroyed me, the resulting score was 0-10. At the time, I thought that this was going to be how all challenges matches were going to be and that I just wasn't cut out for the rigors of high school tennis. I walked off the court, trying not to cry and I eventually failed. Abby Peoples spotted me, ran over, and comforted me in a way that didn't make me feel embarrassed by the fact that I had teared up over a simple challenge match. She helped me learn the value of losing and the strength of confidence.
On the afternoon of August 8th, 2016 a young girl was facing the tennis match of her life. The Girls 14s Nationals were coming to a close and the championship trophy was only 3 games and 1 set away. Everything she had dreamed for was so close, yet so far. The extremely sunny sky glared into her eyes, making it impossible to think. But she couldn’t lose hope now, if she won this match, she would be crowned the Girls 14s Nationals Champion for Tennis. All she had to do was clutch this game. Just a few more points…
