Thomas Edison had been considered very well known as an inventor by many people all around the world. Some of his greatest contributions as an inventor that had influenced life globally had been the Phonograph (1877), The Motion Picture Camera (1892) and publicly introduced globally in 1893. One of the most common inventions that he had developed as an inventor was the The Long Lasting Practical Electric Light Bulb invented on December 31st, 1879.

Edison had multiple ear infections which lead to his hearing loss as an adult. He attended school in Michigan for about 12 weeks when his family moved there in 1854. His mother pulled him from school because he was hyperactive and prone to distraction. In my opinion he was probably bored with the level he was entered at. Edison developed a process for self-education and learning independently that would help him throughout his life. During the civil war, he traveled throughout the Midwest as an itinerant telegrapher. He used his spare time to read, study and experiment with telegraph technology and familiarized himself with electrical science. By the 1870s, Edison became known as a first-rate inventor. He invented the phonograph (figure 1) to compete with Alexander Graham Bells’ telephone. This brought him worldwide fame. Edison’s portrayal in Moran’s book “The Executioner’s Current” holds much more realistic and in depth aspects of his personality, than shown in the short excerpt, “They Transformed the World” pertaining to “America’s greatest change-makers.” On top of being an inventor, as shown in the excerpt, Moran’s portrayal of Edison displays him as an aggressive and competitive businessman by using the media and press to influence public opinion, as well as by pushing for the Electrical Execution Act.
