I attended the Irish Pub jam session at Henry’s Upstairs in Lawrence, Kansas. I went at 5:30 pm on March 13th. When I arrived at Henry’s I went through a coffee shop and then up a set of stairs. As I walked up the stairs I started to smell a different smell from the coffee shop below. It smelled like an old house mixed with the faint smell of beer and very subtle cigarette scent. The upstairs was very cozy. When I was there, there were about 10 audience members and you could call the place “packed”. The feeling you get in this environment is definitely a pub feel. When I go to performances I am accustomed to them being formal and this was on the other end of the spectrum. I felt very relaxed being here and everyone else seemed this way from my observations. There was no real set up for the musicians. There wasn’t a stage, sheet music or stands. They just played in the booths. The people in the audience seemed to be diverse in age but along with the musicians the most common age group attending was middle-aged. The audience members seemed to have connections with the musicians and know about the music and musical instruments that they were playing. This makes me believe that the people who come and watch are regulars at Henry’s. When they started playing pieces, it was what I expected. I have heard Irish music before so it wasn’t a surprise to me. The first thing that came to my mind when they started playing was the scene from the movie Titanic when Jack takes Rose down
In a large city, full of diverse people, finding a musical performance is not hard to come by. Luckily, as I was searching online for different performances I ran across The Flex Crew performing at Skully’s music diner. I have been to Skully’s once before to watch a folk band perform. The atmosphere was a lot different than when we saw The Flex Crew. Obviously, the genre of music was a lot different, along with the atmosphere of the crowd. I was very surprised by the number of people in the bar that evening. Mostly, because the performance started at 11PM and the world series was on. On top of this, online their website said the show began at 10PM, but like a very great band they came out at their own pace. In the meantime, there was a DJ performing to keep the crowd alive. The Flex Crew is a reggae band from the Columbus area. After doing a little research I learned they are known as “the best reggae band in the Midwest.”
Jokes aside the band did do a terrific job with this piece as Mitchell introduced it with something that teenagers could relate to; television. The song was commonly played in many TV shows that the target audience are known to have seen before. However, I never knew much about this composer or his music. The bizarre, but an expectation from a percussion based performance was that the xylophone took the lead. This was actually wonderful to hear because of how unusual it was to hear. The melodic line was also supported by the upper woodwinds which went together significantly well. The timpani player brings out the beat and the base line. It was almost as if there was a great presence as soon as the piece began because of the timpani because it establishes the quarter-note pulse. I’m not used to hearing a whole section of a string family play together with the brass family and the woodwind family, but they did quite the job together. The string family played the off-beat eighth-notes which totally coincide with the timpani’s pulsing quarter-notes. Then there was the famous glissando in the trumpets and trombones. This glissando reacted to the melody that came from the woodwinds and the xylophone, and according to my research this “reaction” to the melody is a compositional technique known as “call and response”. Hearing this piece live was absolutely magnificent, and I felt like I was in some sort of adventure
The pieces were quite odd for me at the first time, first hearing, but I got used to it at the end of the each piece. “The Gospel Train” and “Little David, Play On Your Harp” were African-American Spiritual songs, which I kind of enjoyed, because I was also, very spiritually active. The last song, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” was very calming songs. I liked the lyrics of the song. The lyrics were very touchy that it made me ponder after the applause.
In the heart of downtown, the Valley Bar has an intimate basement level music room. Unlike many concerts, the size and atmosphere of the bar give the audience a personal, raw interaction with the artist. Additionally, this enables the artist to quickly connect to the crowd in a casual, comfortable way. Being so close to the artists allows the audience to feel their emotions on a deeper level than they would in a normal concert
When I went inside there was all old people, everywhere. I was surprised. I never saw concert like this where only old people are present. They all were in casual dresses. They have wines in their hands and hearing the music in the peaceful manner. I was the only one who had Gatorade to drink. There was applause after every instrument played, and after the voice. Old couples were dancing on the side, I was happy and thinking this is how old people enjoy. There was no loud noises and screaming during the concert. Old man, who was hosting the stage welcomed everyone, and announced the names of donors who helped the society to organized that concert. He announced recording of songs is prohibited and requested everyone to switch off their
I arrived at this restaurant on around 4:00pm on a Saturday night. I walked into what almost seemed to be a concert instead of a restaurant. Every weekend the Pour Haus will have live entertainment whether it is a local band or a band they brought out of town. This was possibly the only thing I did not like about my experience. While the live entertainment was great, it was almost too much for the smaller inside area. During the summer they have enough room outside for the live entertainment, but they could have

Not only was this my first Jazz concert, but it was also my first time visiting the University Center for the Arts. I was greeted immediately and with a very welcoming attitude by staff that was willing to guide me in the right direction when locating the entrance to the Griffin Concert Hall. I felt for such a professional environment I should have been paying a lot of money to be enjoying a show at this facility. Proceeding into the concert hall I observed a nearly every seat full with people of all ages. I sat rather close to the stage so I could get a good look and really observe facial expressions and demeanor of the personnel.
October 3rd-4th was Oyster Fest weekend. It was in Shelton WA. On the 3rd it stared at 10am-6pm and on the 4th 10am- 5pm. The ticket price to get in was $5 and food prices were a range of $3-$10. There was live country music on both of the stages. One booth had a mine golf game. Plus there was a train that took kids 3-7 around the park.
On 29 January 2016. My friends and I went to a concert performed by Tiffany Austin. The concert was entitled Tiffany Austin’s Blues de Voyage hosted by Presidio Officer’s Club at San Francisco in partnership with the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music. As I attend the concert, I categorize myself as a casual listener to a well performed music. I didn’t have enough knowledge yet back then to analyze critically on the performance as it is my first time attending a house concert. It was an exciting experience and I enjoyed it a lot. The atmosphere was good as everybody in the room also enjoyed the singing and music played by the performers.
My first concert experience turned out to be very different from what I expected. Even though I would not choose to listen to classical music normally, the concert has made me enjoy this type of music more and made me think about how much more there is to music than just lyrics and a
The instrumental piece “Celtic Air and Dance” by Michael Sweeney is rich in artistic merit due to the presence of various styles, tempos, and moods throughout. Regarding the selection to use this work, when I was in middle school the band performed this song to the whole school and the performance was remarkable. I was shocked to see a group of students my age have such a passion while playing these instruments. The group was in sync which sparked a confidence between the members where the music just flowed into the audiences’ ears. I left that performance wide eyed with goose bumps running through my body. So, when I read this music prompt the first vision I saw was this memorable performance since it appealed to me when I was younger.
The concert was performed on the Southam Hall stage at the NAC; this is a large hall with extremely good acoustics. It is a nationally known stage, so the quality of the hall is very good. Generally, the audience was very receptive as it was composed of adults, who were all silent. The acoustics were very good as the hall spread the sound throughout the hall without making it echo. This had a positive effect on the performance, because it was possible for the orchestra to be clearly heard from any point in the entire hall. I was impressed by the large number of students that I saw that night because the show deserved to have been heard by many young people.
While walking from class yesterday, I saw something. I noticed there was a group of individuals setting up a tent, electric keyboard, and a few other things amongst these. It was obvious to me as if there was going to be a local concert in the park. I assumed this would be produced by a group of younger people, but it was led by an older group. To me, this was rather interesting since it was as close as Woodruff Park. This was a close location from to my dorm and right outside the location of my class. Unfortunately, I was not able to stay for the first half of the session, but I was able to return for a short time after leaving my meeting.
