Kpop Is Not All Sunshine and Rainbows “Kpop” is short for Korean pop music, it is a musical genre consisting of electronic, ballad, R&B, hip hop, rock, jazz, and pop music originating in South Korea. Kpop has spread like wildfire across all of Southeast Asia countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand, etc. Kpop entered the Japanese market at the beginning of the 21st century and immediately became a big hit, as well as the Chinese market. Until today, a large number of teens in the US and in most European countries know of Kpop through the power of the internet. Many Kpop music videos on Youtube exceed by the millionth views. Some companies prefer pure talent, some prefer beauty, some prefer uniqueness in styles, and some prefer personality. After all, it’s about competing for popularity. Depends on how fitted they are for the company, the longer or shorter they must train to make a debut. The ideal time to train for each trainee is three to five years. Park Jihyo, a member of girl group Twice, was trained for ten years since the age of eight. Twice is now one of the most successful Kpop groups in terms of popularity. Within the time of training, trainees will have to follow strict practice schedules, heavy diets, crazy sleeping and resting time. Jackson Wang, a JYP entertainment idol shared that his agency has dance lessons, vocal classes and other types of “star academy” classes where each lasts up to three to five hours a day, and each trainee is required to attend all classes despite school hours. These classes can cost up to $2000 per month, and they are to be paid as soon trainees become successful, if they choose to drop out, they’ll have to pay the company out of pocket. Some trainees can choose to continue with middle school or high school alongside with training. But most of the times, they can’t handle the physical and mental stress of balancing both schedules so a lot of them drop out since a young age.
