The Islamic State Of Iraq

The United States, with its coalition partners, has committed to degrade and destroy the terrorist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This group poses a threat to the people of the Middle East, as well as to the United States, our allies, and interests in the region. If this terrorist organization is left uninterrupted, ISIL will grow, threatening the surrounding areas of the Middle East, our allies abroad, and the United States.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, popularly known as ISIS and Daesh, is the 21st centuries rising global threat to humanity. The world has united to reduce and ultimately prevent genocide. In the paper ISIS will be referenced as Daesh. The initial part of the essay will cover Daesh origins, ideology, goals, and objectives. It is essential to know the similarities of the present Daesh brutalities and historic barbarisms of Wahhabism. The rest of the essay will focus on leadership, funding, and capabilities, such as physical bases support locations. The conclusion will attempt to raise concern of the internal threat within the United States. This essay will be limited to sources not having access to restricted or classified information. The closing goal of this essay is to embolden the serious threat to the United States and other countries seeking pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.

ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is a terrorist group that is trying to build a caliphate in Syria, as well as evoking war with the United States. ISIS first started as a branch off of Al- Qaeda; until February 2014, when they broke away from Al- Qaeda. According to K.T. McFarland, a national security analyst, ISIS has raped and tortured it’s way through Syria and Iraq, killing those who won’t join their group.. They have managed to recruit thousands of citizens from around the world to join their cause. ISIS is a realistic threat to the U.S. and the world, and the US needs to stop them.

Throughout history, the Middle East has encountered many obstacles that are still present today. Terrorism is a huge obstacle that has not yet been overcome. In previous years, the United States saw Al Qaeda as the main face of terrorism. Today, that is not the case. Formally established in 2013, the most prominent terrorist group today is ISIS also known as the Islamic State and the Levant (Pierpaoli). ISIS is a Salafist Muslim organization that has declared a caliphate in Iraq and Syria and imposes a strict interpretation of Islam. According to the U.S. secretary of defense, it is “beyond anything we have seen.” Led by Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, it has been seen as the most potent military force in the nation (Morgenstern). Today, one of the biggest issues facing the United States as well as the rest of the world is the Sunni-militant group which goes by the name of “ISIS,” or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It has been the topic for major discussion for the past three years, with many leaders of major countries and nations trying to figure out how to defeat them. ISIS is a powerful force and has been for several years and many countries including the United States are trying to figure out how to stop them.

The United States need to eradicate ISIS and all of their affiliations in order to get rid of them. ISIS are responsible for countless acts of destruction and unjustified killings. The United States need to bomb Iraq and Syria where ISIS members are located. Doing so will prevent ISIS members coming into America

ISIS which is also known by other names such as ISIL or the Islamic State, arised around 1999 in Iraq as a group of extreme Sunni Muslim Jihadists. Extreme jihadism is the practice of extremely agressive interpretations of the Jihad and of Islamic fundamentalism. Though every muslim somewhat follows their own Jihad , this group has taken it to another level both believing it is right to kill and behead in the name of god. After Americas invasion of Iraq was over , and with the neighboring civil war in Syria , the brutal group has been able to gain alot of power in the past couple years and seems to be gaining even more now.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham is a terrorist organization that began as Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Since Al-Sham can mean Syria or the Levant, media and governments usually refer to them as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL); some use the derogatory name Daesh in order to avoid recognizing the group’s claims. The Islamic State declared themselves a caliphate with Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi becoming Caliph Ibrahim. He claims authority over all loyal Muslims worldwide, and uses extreme violence in an attempt to spread their extreme ideology. They pose a great threat to the Middle East and the West as long as they continue to exist and hold power in the region. In order to limit the radical long-term effect they could have on the world, the nations of the Coalition against them must devote all available resources to destroying the organization rather than many devoting some resources to containing them.

The Islamic State, otherwise called the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), takes after an unmistakable assortment of Islam whose convictions about the way to the Day of Judgment matter to its system, and can help the West know its adversary and foresee its conduct. In December of 2011, the United States withdrew all remaining combat troops from Iraq. After eight years of war, the United States turned the responsibility for the defense of Iraq over to the Iraqi security forces. Iraq immediately saw the rise of sectarian violence among Sunnis and Shia. This nation also saw the reemergence of the insurgency known as Al Qaeda in Iraq in the northwest portion of the country. The problems in Iraq grew with the igniting of a civil war in the neighboring nation of Syria. This civil war allowed for members of Al-Qaeda in Iraq to spread to and develop in an unstable area and emerging as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS. Within twelve months, ISIS grew by creating of an organizational structure, engaging in violent military campaigns, developing an economy and establishing successful recruitment techniques. ISIS now controls large swaths of territory in both northwest Iraq and Eastern Syria. Political leadership in the United States is now debating what action should be taken to combat the terror group ISIS. To prevent ISIS from harming our national security, to stop the threat of international terrorism and to stop the destruction of Iraq and its people The United States should send ground troops to Iraq to combat ISIS.

“As ISIS has grown, its goals and intentions have become clearer. Al Qaeda conceived of itself as the vanguard of a global insurgency mobilizing Muslim communities against secular rule. ISIS in contrast seeks to control territory and create a ‘pure’ Sunni Islamist state governed by a brutal interpretation of sharia” (Cronin). The quote shows that ISIS is growing, and will keep growing. They are growing in a very negative and brutal way. In doing so the U.S. does not like their ways of handling situations, and they need to be stopped until they can not be stopped anymore.The U.S. has a choice to send troops into stop them or to try a plan that does not involve troops. Although deploying ground troops against ISIS may not be apart of Obama’s plan, U.S. should deploy ground troops against ISIS.

ISIS is a very prominent thing that we hear about today. A lot of people don’t fully understand what ISIS is, ISIS stands for Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. Which means that ISIS is trying to convert and take over all of Iraq and all of Syria. They are doing this by killing, capturing, and terrorizing innocent civilians. These are people that have done nothing to deserve this. They are also destroying all of the land that they come in contact with. Most of which being sacred, timeless land that is what we would consider and landmark.

Everyday we see on the news the next terrible thing that has happened involving ISIS. Mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters are all perishing due to cruelty of this group. We all sit around waiting for the next attack hoping that it isn’t us, living our lives in the fear of the possibility of being a victim to these people. The US continues to attempt to control ISIS and put them to an end, but no one can find the right solution.

In the horror novel, Supernatural Horror in Literature, the author, H.P. Lovecraft starts off by stating the following: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Choosing the topic of ISIS/ISIL, which are the Islamic State of Iraq & Syria / the Islamic State of Iraq & the Levant, was an easy choice because in truth, I know very little about the terrorist groups within these Islamic States. I, along with seventy percent of Americans, fear the rise of the IS and would consider them the number one threat to American interests (Telhami). Through further studying this topic, I have been able to better understand how ISIS/ISIL was created, along with understanding International Law’s ambiguous confrontation of the issue regarding the use of force.

The Islamic State is an accident of history, emerging from multiple political, economic, and social tensions in the Middle East. It has challenged the territorial divisions forced in the region following the fall of the Ottoman Empire by shaping out for itself a large area of territory. But ultimately, its consequence will flow as much from its challenge to settled concepts of government, national sovereignty, and national identity. The Islamic State is most well-known for the violence with which it asserts control, but its vicious tactics will likely stop the group from ruling efficiently and building broader support beyond the front line fighters who defend its security and the authoritarian killers who walk its streets.
