The United States contains 5% of the world’s population. However, our nation covers 35-50% of the world’s civilian-owned guns, is ranked first for firearms per capita, and holds the highest homicide rate among all other nations of wealth and democracy at 88.5% (Masters). Such high rates and loose restrictions are bound to lead to tragedy. We will not sit here and make excuses, we will not allow power in the hands of insanity, and we will not allow the safety of our children to be hindered. After each tragedy that has struck, we have failed to successfully improve gun control. Gun control has been a big topic for the past decade in the united states. These debates will rise and fall time in and time out after something horrific happens in the state. Anti-Gun supporters do not realize that it is extremely difficult to regulate something in the states that is a big portion of our economy.Would stricter gun laws change anything? So far statistically It has been proven otherwise one must consider how a citizen would defend themselves when they are faced with terror. How will they defend themselves if there are restrictions on guns? It seems that some states that have stricter gun laws are where the most shootings and also where more terrorists attack take place. It seems that gun control is only pushed when shootings gradually get worse and worse. But why are these anti gun groups not speaking up when police brutality happens or when a racial hate crime occurs? The occurence of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting of December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut. The gunman, was 20-year-old Adam Lana, who first shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. He then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. As first responders arrived, Lana committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The shooting began at approximately 9:30 a.m. Sandy Hook was the deadliest mass shooting at a high school or grade school in U.S. history and the second-deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre. This shooting yet again assured the nation that gun violence is still as big of a problem as it was back in the late 90’s when 27 teenagers got killed in another mass killing in Columbine, Colorado. We as a nation must stand up and oppose mass murdering because these actions are not only unjust but inhuman as well.  The increase in gun violence can be decreased by, identifying the regions in the country where the most gun violence occurs and restricting their access to limiting or monitoring the availability of guns and ammunition.

Americans realize that the 10 Amendments produce the Bill of Rights which were made to prohibit government powers from infracturing the basic individual liberties; therefore, the changing of one of the Amendments would offset the basic individual liberties granted by the founding fathers. Countless U.S. news stations and support groups portray the mass shootings, gun violence, other gun propaganda, or naturally the use guns, as a scapegoat to support gun control. One morning in Newtown, Connecticut, many children and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary were ready to begin their daily routine of attending school, or work. Unfortunately, they were not aware that this would be the last time they do so. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary ended the lives of several staff and young children. This devastating tragedy added fuel to the controversial gun argument. Parents of the children lobbied to pass gun reform laws which would help provide safety for citizens and prevent awful events similar to this from occurring in the future.

On December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, twenty-year-old Adam Lanza (just barely out of his teens) shot and killed six adults and twenty children at Sandy Hook Elementary School after murdering his own mother at home. He then turned the gun on himself bringing the morning’s fatalities to twenty-eight. Sandy Hook elementary school shooting is a horrifying example of exactly how easily accessible guns can destroy innocent lives. Twenty young children were murdered on that day. Six teachers died trying to protect them and it was all down to one man. One man with a twisted mind and three guns he had taken from his own home was able to eliminate the future of twenty six people and break apart families forever.

One main issue in the Americas is the problem of gun control and if guns should be allowed. Many Americans will argue that since it is allowed in the Second Amendment there should be no argument that the people should be allowed to own guns. Others will say there should be gun control because many crimes committed are with guns. On the other hand it could be seen as criminals still finding some way of getting guns albeit through smuggling or some other way of obtaining guns which would lead to more issues because Americans wouldn 't be able to defend themselves. Just recently, a student fired a shot inside a school bathroom after he found his father’s semi-automatic handgun and brought it to school ("Book Bags Banned following Conyers School Shooting."). This shows that it is extremely easy for young or unqualified people to buy or find guns. On April 20th, 1999, two teenage students entered Columbine High School and opened fired, taking the lives of twelve students and one teacher; the shooters committed suicide after (Stanley). This shooting called for national debates on the loose laws of gun control. Not much has changed since that shooting except for a couple of new laws. In addition to the Columbine High School shooting, there was also another very recent massacre that involved an elementary school. In December of 2012, was a shooting that rattled Connecticut and had the residents of Sandy Hook feeling defenseless. Ever since the 2nd Amendment was ratified, gun control has been a flaming topic of debate in America. The politics surrounding this debate could affect the lives of millions of Americas who already own firearms. Americans are looking for information regarding what a conceal carry permit is and how to obtain a conceal- carry permit so that they may formulate their own opinions on the issue. The United States is known for many things. We’re number one in Moon landings, number one in diversity, and number one in guns per 100 people. As a left-wing Democrat, I find this very concerning and dangerous, but many others feel differently about the topic of gun control, and more specifically, background checks. Most opposition to extensive background checks are Republicans, and this can be seen portrayed in traditional Republican values like safety, security, and family. Through the opposition of explicit restrictions to our Second Amendment right, gun control opposition enacts values like patriotism and nationalism with strong traditional American beliefs.

Even though guns are used for good every day, they are also used for situations that are not good for our safety or the safety of others. Gun violence continues to rise in places where handguns are illegal. In the United Kingdom, where hand guns are illegal there are more violent crimes than here in the United States where handguns are legal. Even though we have less violent crimes, we still have a major problem with violence. The article “Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence” states, “On average, thirty-two Americans are murdered with guns every day and one hundred-forty are treated for a gun assault in an emergency room” (“Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence”). So it shows violent crimes are still a big problem in this country. One of the biggest problems is how much it affects the children of our country. The author also says, “Youth children which live in the most rural U.S. counties are as likely to die from a gunshot as those living in the most urban counties. Rural children die of more gun suicides and unintentional shooting deaths. Urban children die more often of gun homicides” (“Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence”). Reading this fact is very alarming as children should not be around guns as they are very dangerous to them. Overall, guns can cause a lot of deaths, but it shows where they are legal there is less violent crimes.
