Gun Violence
Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.
It has spread to the suburbs and small towns. Gun violence rates have increased in the last decade due to hatred and societal issues, and while shooters and victims both face many difficult obstacles, there are some solutions that the public and schools can enforce through awareness.
One major cause of Gun Violence is hatred, which can lead to many different outcomes. These outcomes can either have a good affect on some or a negative. For example, Getting caught and now having a criminal record. Some may learn from this and never commit another crime. The rest on the other hand can be more raged when released from jail. This will cause them to escalate down the same path as before. These people are causing the same problems to society as before. Therefore they are a living threat to everyone around them.
Another cause of gun violence is social
In today’s time there is no stopping the public from witnessing the day to day violence across America. It floods the daily news, it scrolls past our eyes through our smartphone screens, it blares through our stereos, and it’s published in our newspapers and magazines. As humans, in this day and age prosper where bad news is never hidden from the media. It is recognized all the time, the thoughts of violence crossing one 's path never settling just right in in the stomach. People live to assume they are merely lucky until, essentially, they have become the bad news constantly being brought to the public. Violence, unfortunately, is apart of life, becoming more of a problem in some places than others- but constantly lingering among us. One of the most disputed, and common results of violence nowadays in America is specifically gun violence. “Guns are responsible for roughly 30,000 deaths a year in America” (Goldberg). This is, without a doubt, a serious issue in America. Taya Kyle, the wife of Chris Kyle, who inspired the movie ‘American Sniper’ spoke out: “My government has proven that it 's not able to protect me against people who want to kill. And I don 't blame the government, because there is only one person to blame here: The man or woman who decided to kill.” (Kyle). It is no one 's fault during a violent gun crime but the person who committed this crime, no one can predict the future. It is not the guns fault for
“We lose eight children and teenagers to gun violence every day. If a mysterious virus suddenly started killing eight of our children every day, America would mobilize teams of doctors and public health officials. We would move heaven and earth until we found a way to protect our children. But not with gun violence.” (Warren, 2014)Criminal gun violence, which violence enacted by the use of a firearm, includes murder, assault, and suicide, or attempted suicide. This violence imposes a heavy burden on our standard of living, not only on groups that have the highest victimization rates, but also on the community at large. By one estimate, this burden amounts to $80 billion per year. (Cook and Ludwig, 2000)
This database indicates the mass shootings as incidents of 3 or more shooting victims, not gang or drug related and appears to be indiscriminate. It includes the numbers of people injured or killed in mass shootings from 2000 to 2015. 80% of gun deaths occurred in young men and 10% in young women. Young men were ten times more likely to be killed by guns than young women, but older teenagers are at the most risk. If gun control was legal, it would decrease the amount of fatalities and injuries. The main purpose of this database is inform readers by looking at the numbers to really see our country’s issue with gun violence. There are no proofs stating this database is pleasant. They all state the toll of fatalities and injuries. The date of
Imagine living in a carefree world, it’s impossible but with the criminal justice system enacting laws to forbid illegal activity, crime has lessened nationwide. Several categories of crime such as guns, drugs, and organized crimes spark major concern. Crime has existed since human conscience was active. Gun violence is the illegal use of a firearm. Drug crimes are executed by one whom obtains, produces, and allots illegal substances. Organized crimes have several components, one that involves firearms, drugs, and the exchange of human beings for self-gain. This professional crime threatens the tranquility within our society, defies our rights as a human, and weakens all social and economic classes nationwide. Thanks to state-established programs, an extensive amount of crimes, globally, are eliminated, resulting in fewer criminals among the community. Numerous policies were formed to prevent the distribution of firearms and criminal gun crimes such as homicide. The Organized Crime Convention provides states a certain plan to battle organized crime. Crime has marked our history, and unfortunately, it will continue in the future. The criminal justice system is society’s response towards any violation of cultural norms. Advanced forensic procedures, together with the amount of news given by the public allows an offender to be tracked down. New and improved forensic technology aids scientists and investigators to conclude their ongoing criminal investigation. The criminal
From watching, listening, and being brainwashed by the overpaid liberal media continually, it is obvious that America is hurting from having these people telling us how we should think. The media is trying to push gun control on anyone that will tune in or read it. The media will all say the same thing, and the problem is gun violence. What if one removes the word gun from gun violence, that still leaves violence. Before one can decide which side to support, the information should be completely researched for important, specific information about how America will be affected, and what the cost are for the people protecting their rights.
As the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” However, President Obama addressed a call to limit gun violence in January 2016 due to the tragedies caused by gun violence happened in the past. Gun control has always been a controversial issue in the U.S. While some people claim it is a constitutional right for citizens to carry guns to defend themselves, others argue that guns are more likely to cause harms to people rather than protecting them. During my online research, I have found two primary sources, an advertisement and a gun control policy, advocating for gun control, and a cartoon against gun control, all adopting different strategies and from different perspectives. The advertisement and the cartoon both aim to arise emotional feelings to the audience, while the gun control policy tends to convince the audience through the logical structure. Nevertheless, the advertisement and the cartoon are relatively weak in logos, while the policy has some weaknesses in pathos.
Although it seems like the problem of crime and gun violence is never approached or discussed, there are leaders within America tirelessly working to find a solution to help decrease crime. Alex Yablon puts it like this in his article on The Trace, saying “the lack of progress on the federal level should not be confused with a lack of proposed solutions to America 's gun violence epidemic – there are plenty of those, on both sides of the table.” Yablon means there are some bills that would limit the access to guns as well as bills that would prevent the enforcement of restrictions on guns. However, he is not the only one to have an opinion of how the government is viewing crime and gun violence. John Donohue, in his article Gun Control: What We can learn from other Advanced Countries, points out that besides being the world leader in the amount of guns available to citizens, the U.S. does not seem to be making much progress on finding a solution. Donohue also goes on to say that, “the stricter gun laws of other ‘advanced countries’ have restrained homicidal violence, suicides and gun accidents,” despite there being protest by the armed citizens (Newsweek Magazine Web). These two men each hold different viewpoints when it comes to how they think crime and gun violence is being addressed by the government, however, each of their viewpoints presents a valid opinion in regards to the issue. Still, in order to fully understand what is going on at the federal level, one has to
There hardly exists a more divisive issue in the political and media landscape across the United States currently than that of gun control. Advocates on either side of the issue are quick to voraciously fight for what they believe, as well as to tear down anyone who sees the issue differently. But unlike other issues, it seems that gun control advocacy does not rest on a spectrum; either you are pro-gun control or you are against it, and anyone caught in the middle is likely to get flak from both sides. But why is the issue of gun control such a hot topic? And why is it that there seems to be no room for compromise? The reason the issue of gun control is so heated is because it’s not just another frenzied debate; it’s a battle.
There have been 46 school shootings so far this year, with an average of about one a week. This is an absolutely mind blowing statistic., Nno other countries in the world have such a major problem. (Carissimo). I aimed to pursue this broad problem, and to discover why the U.S. has such a problem with mass shootings. and I wondered if there a way to fix this permeating issue or will it continue to eat away at America. How many more lives will be lost until, we as a country are able to rally together to solve such a profound problem?. Guns themselves have not affected my life personally, but they have become such a center focus of politics and the media. I have never so much as held a gun in my life, but nonetheless, the constant bombardment of violence and death inspired me to follow it in further detail. I think the key reason I’m so intrigued by this topic is my own uncertainty on where I stand on the issue, I feel unable to pick a specific side of the topic, but regardless I feel, like many others, that there is something fundamentally wrong, something that is the root cause of all of this violence and death. As a first world country the U.S. outrageously outnumbers the entire world in gun violence and guns infuse the whole culture of the U.S.. And as a country we have yet to find the cause or the solution.
America has 88.8 guns per 100 people, which is about 270,000,000 guns, making it the highest total and per capita number in the world. (“Should...”) However, children are not the majority of the owners of these guns, parents and other adults are. Often, children are taught not to use guns, but one can question if this is truly the correct thing to do. If children are given permission to use firearms by parents, it is possible that they might learn more than a child without this privilege. However, guns do, in fact, have the capability of causing harm and havoc. Although weapons can potentially harm young children, parents who permit their kids to shoot guns should not uniformly be labeled “bad” parents because firearms can involve a child’s
Plaguing the nation, for quite sometime, has been the issue of gun control. Whether you are for gun control, or against it, almost everyone has an opinion on it. One organization, Moms Demand Action, has released a series of ads expressing their views on the issue. Released in April 2013, was a series of print ads entitled “Choose One,” in which a child is shown holding an assault weapon which is juxtaposed to another child holding an item that is banned in schools, but is not harmful. As stated above, the ads were released in April 2013, which was four months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. It is no doubt that these ads were created in response to the shooting due to the location and the theme of the ad. The specific ad that will be covered is the one that features a young girl holding an assault rifle, and the other girl holding a copy of ‘Little Red Riding Hood.’ The ad is meant to illustrate the absurdity of the lax laws regarding gun regulations. Moms Demand Action achieved their goal by presenting a thought-provoking and shocking ad.
The Orlando nightclub shooting in Florida on June 12, 2016 was the single largest massacre in U.S history, taking the lives of 50 individuals, including the shooter himself, and injuring 53 others. This is one extreme example of the gun violence that has been occurring in this country, but mass shootings like this and the one at Newton in 2012 are only a small part of our gun violence issue. The everyday gun violence that takes place in cities all across the United States claims the lives of thousands every single year. According to The Guardian, 33,500 civilians die each year because of gun brutality- “that’s about 1 life every 15 minutes” (Beckett). Between the years of 1999 and 2013, there were 464,003 gun deaths in the U.S, about 58% of them were suicides 37% were homicides. (ProCon.org) Gun violence and the consequences of that violence, have become a real and dangerous problem in the U.S , why else would the CDC list the United States as having the highest rate of gun violence out of all developed countries today? (Gale Opposing Viewpoints) This issue is not just attributable to a single factor, there are several that play an important part in why gun violence is such an issue in the U.S, namely laws and poverty; and in these causes we can also find solutions.
According to the Virgin Islands Police Department’s public information officer as quoted in the VI Consortium (Gilbert, 2016, para. 4), violence is increasing and is expected to continue rising and reach 60 non-vehicular homicides by the end of the year in the territory. Within the same VI Consortium article (Gilbert, 2016, para, 5), the Governor of the Virgin Islands, Kenneth Mapp was quoted as saying “[t]he violence is going to be brought under control, but there is going to be more violence and there’s going to be more homicides and more shootings before we arrest this problem because we have to catch up. The government has to catch up with a lack of officers on the streets, the lack of law enforcement personnel. We have to catch up because
Gun is always a heated topic in US. Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans cut their life by virtual of guns, great deal of people tend to prohibit gun purchase in the US, says the number of people died increase dramatically every year, more and more people use gun in an inappropriate way, in other word, crime. President Obama delivered several emotional speeches last year for gun accidents, from empathy to angry. But there is a counter argument says gun control is not the answer to crime, criminal can always find guns to hurt people, if average people can not have guns, we don’t have weapon to protect ourselves and families. Hence, the responsibilities become pivotal for gun owners, we have to take the responsibility for either ourselves and others.
Firearms have been the subject of long standing controversies in America society, culture and law. And our children and young adults are getting their hands on guns in a variety of ways and for various reasons. Some for recreational use, hunting and target shooting, and some for a means of hurting one, or many people at a time. “An average of seven children and teens under the age of 20 are killed by guns every day” the Brady Campaign states. (Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, n.d.). There is a problem with keeping guns in the home because it increases the risk of injury and death. Between 6% and 14% of firearm owning households with a child under age 18 have an unlocked and loaded firearm. (Johnson, 2004, p.175) .
