The issue of reorganizing an organization is a complex problem that can affect many areas of the business. The division manager, Karen Howell, faces several issues that will determine the fate of the employees that comprise a twenty percent reduction (Gusdorf, 2011, p. 6). The lack of accurate documentation is prevalent pertaining to employee performance is lacking throughout most the department (p. 6). This is apparent after discussion with several supervisors that admitted that employee appraisals were not a central focus during the evaluation process (p. 6). In addition, the reduction of employees through the process of layoffs can decrease the service quality for the organization (p. 1). The decision by division manager, Karen Howell, to proceed with the selection of which employees to layoff may consider alternative options. First, this option may include incentives for early retirement to reduce the force and cost associated with employees that are senior (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2016, p. 187). Next, the incentive options for senior members of an organization make an attractive prospect for those that may have considered this option (p. 187). In contrast, this does not imply to reduce the workforce based on age due the legal implication that restrict this practice (p. 187). The process to start the layoffs should include several steps that include employee notification, criteria for layoff development, communication with separated employees, media mediation, security concerns, and provide reassurance for remaining employees (pp. 193-194). Fist, the employer should reduce the amount of legal concerns by providing an elective release that protects the business of Civil Right Act, discrimination in age and disability (Moran, 2010, p. 72).
