The issue of time can never be overemphasized, to me, every human being is unique, and so is with everything they do. Since we are the expert of our own lives, how we experience and interpret time solely depends on us. That is to say, not everyone on the planet sees the idea of time in the same way. I know that as there are distinctive objective scales of physical time, there are diverse cultural scales of subjective time. However, what is very common in every culture is that we tend to see time in line that is we call things of yesterday or years ago “things of the past” and things of tomorrow “things in the future”. This short story talks about a book that is also called The Garden of Forking Paths. Yu Tsun meets a man called Dr, Stephen Albert who showed him a letter written by his grandfather, Tu’si pen. Before this encounter, Yu Tsun reflects early in the story, “everything happens to a man precisely now. Century follows century, and things happen only in the present” (64). With this, Yu Tsun portrays time in a linear manner. That is, people experience time as an issue of present minutes, one after the other. When the minute is experienced, on the other hand, it no longer exists. Because of this, the past is no more genuine than the future. Both exist no place but in the human mind: the past fits in with the domain of memory, while the future has a place with the domain of imagination. Nevertheless, when Yu Tsun arrives at Dr. Stephen Albert’s home, the notion of time as linear is challenged. Albert explained to Yu Tsun that Ts’ ui Pen his ancestor “did not believe in a uniform, absolute time. He believed in an infinite series of times, in a growing, dizzying net of divergent, convergent, and parallel times” (69) .In this development of time, all presents, pasts, and future exist at the same time. Further, every choice an individual makes prompts diverse future.
