And I, Angolo di Tura…buried my five children with my own hands… And so many died that all believed it was the end of the world- The Plague in Siena: An Italian Chronicle The Black Death, as famously known as the Plague, was the first true disaster that was recorded during the fourteenth century. For the disease shattered the populations of Europe, East Asia and the Middle East. One of the countries that was devastated was Italy, for the plague changed their culture, economics, and social structure. The culture was no longer full of life, instead it was full of death and sorrow. Writers like Boccaccio wrote about the agony of the Black Death. Furthermore, the social structure went from a firm society to a flexible society; for people were able to go against the status quo that was set at birth and place themselves in better positions. For example, laborers moved up and became merchants as a result of the death rate rising. Nonetheless, the economy took a fall as well because the plague had killed many of the laborers that worked the fields. this resulted in many of them migrating to northern Italy, until the plague was gone. And over the past couple of centuries, historians and scientist have tried to understand why the Black Death occurred and what caused it. Mark Wheelis, a microbiologist, believes that it was a
