The Jesuits, also known as the Society of Jesus, are an all male Roman Catholic order that was founded by Ignatius Loyola in 1540. The primary message of the Jesuits are to “find God in all things”, and to make “men and women for others”. Each Jesuit takes a vow of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The current pope of the Catholic church, Pope Francis, is a Jesuit. The Jesuit order is committed to doing justice all around the world. In Cleveland the Jesuits can be found at Gesu Grade School, St. Ignatius High School, and John Carroll University. In Cleveland, the Jesuit order founded St. Ignatius in 1886. All three Jesuit schools in the Cleveland area are highly active in serving those who need help, especially those in the inner city. The …show more content…
The Jesuits and Marianist have many similarities and differences among their communities. In the Marianist community they too are very much involved in wide variety of people such as, education, parishes, and spirituality centers. Just as the Jesuits are focused on diversity, so are the Marinist. The Marianist community consisted of Priest and Brothers which eventually spread to the Sisters, while the Jesuits are mainly made up of just Priests and Brothers. The mission of the Marianist is to seek the gospel through service and the lives of others. With the guidance of Mary, the Marianist work together to find faith to help serve others for their dignity, liberation, and justice. The Marianist look at Mary as a model of faith and guidance to help carry out God’s plan to serve others. Mary is their model of faith, just as Jesus is the Jesuits model of faith. Marianist put the presence of Jesus among not only themselves but for others. Both Jesuits and Marianists value living, praying, and supporting the community which strengthens the world, mainly those in poverty. The Marianists has a similar mission statement to the Jesuits as they both “live in a community as equals.” The difference between each of the mission statements are that the Marianists “minister with the youth and solidarity of the poor.” Both religious orders contribute to today’s society by making Cleveland a better place through work of God and His
Ignatius did not worry about not knowing the French language, as he trusted that God would help him cope with language barriers as he did in the past. He walked seven-hundred miles to Paris from Salamanca. In Paris, Ignatius realized that he should focus more on education and postpone his efforts to help the marginalized and people in need. Ignatius realized that in Spain, he devoted too much time to helping others and not enough time getting educated. At the age of thirty-seven, Ignatius enrolled at the College of Montaigu to study humanities, which included the study of Latin grammar and literature. Ignatius had been given money by some of his Spanish benefactors so that he would not have to beg for alms. With this money, he found a room in a boarding house with other Spanish students and turned over the money he was given to another student there for safekeeping. Unfortunately, the student quickly spent the money and Ignatius had no money to pay for school or support himself. He left the boarding house and found a room at the Hospital Saint-Jacques, a hospice for pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. However, the hospice was far away from Ignatius’ school, giving Ignatius far too little time to study and too little time to beg arms. It also caused Ignatius to miss the morning hours of school due to the hospice’s
The actions that people make around us can help us succeed as a society. In The Book of Martha, Martha’s actions helped solve a huge problem that humanity faced: greed. The human mind is capable of experiencing many emotions, and though we try to avoid negative emotions, there are times when we are victims to our own mind. In reality, humans have more negative characteristics other than greed. By practicing religion, one can find a way to better themselves. Our community and society revolves around our belief of a higher being. Through the teachings of God, we make decisions that will benefit our society. A way in which people practice their religion is by attending mass, held at a church. The church that I decided to visit is called, “The Parish of Santa Rosa,” in which I got the chance to interview one of the Pastors.
• Legion of Mary: This sodality had its origins in Ireland and was founded by Frank Duff, a common man. Its role was to help the spiritual life of its members and help those who were sick and house-bound. They also helped explain the Catholic Faith to those who did not understand it. This was joined by the many parishioners.
After visiting The Knights of Columbus I learn something interesting. The world 's largest Catholic fraternal service organization was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven in 1882; it was named in honor of Christopher Columbus.
“The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is an apostolic Catholic community of women religious that exists to carry out the Gospel of Jesus Christ through service and prayer in the world” (qtd. in “About the Sisters of Charity”). The Sisters are led by their mission statement to be “[u]rged by the love of Christ and in the spirit of [their] founder, Elizabeth Ann Seton, [the] Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati strive to live Gospel values. [They] choose to act justly, to build loving relationships, to share [their] resources with those in need, and to care for all creation” (qtd. in “Mission Statement”). Through this mission, they dedicate themselves to “the education of children, care of orphans, the poor and the sick” (qtd. in “Sisters of Charity Cincinnati”). These values are exemplified in numerous ways but specifically have been shown with the creation of educational institutions, orphanages, and their selflessness during the civil war.
The Sisters of St Joseph have made many contributions to the Catholic Church, some of which include providing education for the poor, caring for children and the elderly, and providing pastoral support. They have also set up spirituality centres where they can provide support and opportunities for people to
A Message From a Priest to the Congregation Mother Teresa was a Catholic saint who was famous for her missionary work, and received a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts (“Mother Teresa”). She is quoted as saying, “Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work” (“Mother Teresa”). This quote refers to the Christian value of missionary work to the needy.
Our task is to choose two Jesuit secondary schools and to learn about their approach to the Jesuit teachings and beliefs. The first school, Fordham Preparatory School, is located in the United States. The second school Loyola High School is located in Canada. These schools wouldn 't be here today if it wasn 't for St. Ignatius of Loyola and his creation of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540. We will explain the dual purpose of Jesuit education and how both schools incorporate it, the history and general information of both schools, how they compare to Fairfield Prep, and how both schools show compassion.
While visiting the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe I discovered how religion is capable of bring a community together to worship one religion. The cathedral shrine of the virgin of Guadalupe is a catholic church and is the second largest Catholic Church membership in the United States. As a result, I found it to be the perfect location to visit for this reflection paper because of my family has been practicing the Catholic religion for many years. Additionally, this experience also allowed me to go back to my religious root because I had little exposure to religion while growing up and have not considered myself religious because of this reason. Visiting the cathedral was an eye-opening religious experience, from the exterior to
Roles of the Catholic Church in Western civilization has been scrambled with the times past and development of Western society. Regardless of the fact that the West is no longer entirely Catholic, the Catholic tradition is still strong in Western countries. The church has been a very important foundation of public facilities like schooling, Western art, culture and philosophy; and influential player in religion. In many ways it has wanted to have an impact on Western approaches to pros and cons in numerous areas. It has over many periods of time, spread the teachings of Jesus within the Western World and remains a foundation of continuousness connecting recent Western culture to old Western culture.-
While I was at my last job for a Jesuit University, I was introduced to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and his Ignatian
For one, St. Ignatius originally founded the Jesuits and Le Moyne College is a Jesuit school. This represents unity with the eternal community of the faith. Also, Jesuit values, created by St. Ignatius, are being passed down through generations. The faith is being preserved and restored throughout generations. The statue depicts the service St. Ignatius provided to the faith.
Ignatius of Loyola: Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish knight from a local noble family , hermit, priest since 1537, and theologian who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and on April 19, 1541 became the first Superior General.
The order was different in that the priests did not wear a habit, they did not pray the Office (daily prayers said by priests and monks), there was no hierarchical structure, and they did the work that the pope ordered them to do (Cunningham 205). The order believed that the problems of the Church were more of a people’s problem than a doctrine problem (Lindberg 335). They thought that if a believer masters his will and follows God freely, then there would be no need for reform (Lindberg 335). According to the Jesuits, “Catholics had fallen away from pure faith by not participating in pure obedience to the hierarchical Church,” (Holder 197). The priests went all over the world, spreading the word of God in places like India, South America, and China (Holder 198). The order also established many colleges as well to teach their ways (Holder 199). They practised an untraditional type of prayer called “interior prayer” (Holder 197). It was a “form of silent prayer that sought out God in the inner recesses of the believer’s soul” (Holder 197). Loyola wrote a book called the Spiritual Exercises which “was to be used as a handbook designed to help somebody guide another through a program of reflections and meditations that would lead to a deeper sense of purpose in life and to a deeper commitment to the ideal of Jesus” (qtd. in Holder 199). The idea of this order is similar to another order in Spain, who saw that self-reform, and not conflict, was the
St. Peter’s Basilica and La Sagrada Familia are structures with amazing architecture, but they are much more than just a structure. Both basilicas tell a story about not just the architects and their interests of certain architectural styles, but also about the history and story of Catholicism. La Sagrada Familia and St. Peter’s Basilica are not often compared due to the time in which they were built, as well as due to their different styles of art and architecture. However, despite their very different styles of architecture, they both serve Catholicism a similar purpose by uniting those believing in the Catholic faith in very similar ways by using these magnificent buildings as propaganda in a positive manner.
