The Joy We Experience From Horror

When reading or watching a horror story there is a feeling you get from it that may to some seem weird if your supposed to be horrified from the story. The feeling comes as terror and fulfillment that we experience in us. But, why do we want to experience these feelings when we can be happy just playing a game? Also, why do we want to? Everyone who watches and reads horror will do it for one main reason: that they experience more pleasure from the actual pain which can sound confusing because you do not normally hear those to words together. it is almost like a little kid with candy. Viewers like the kid want the good that comes from the thrill and if they have to wait they want it even more. If we keep wanting these stories then what do we really get from them?
When reading or watching a horror story we often get mixed emotions that would seem to clash but really they can help us understand better. An example of this would be when Trisha is lost in the forest and is “battling” to figure out her way and struggling with religion. Stephen King writes, “It was a fully grown North American black bear, perhaps four hundred ponds” (The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, 244) What this quote is talking about is when we would see a black bear we would experience horror. As the reader we get horrified but want to know what happens so we keep reading. As we read on we can get more horrified but we get this excitement while reading on that keeps us wanting to read on more. Even though we were horrified the black bear ended up saving her life. This is an example of how being scared makes us want more excitement from this horror.

Horror is a feeling of fear, shock, or disgust that we take in as pleasure and excitement. The excitement draws in and makes us want more of the same feeling because we have experienced something we want again that cannot be found in our previous everyday life.
