The political stability and prosperity of the Renaissance Period created an atmosphere where people’s interests returned to the ancient teachings of Rome and Greece. This resulted in an increased interest in art, especially art that highlighted an individual’s experience. During this time there was little turmoil and the economy was flourishing, so people could live more extravagantly. The art of the Renaissance Period reflected this extravagance as well as the time period’s return to an interest in humanism. Humanism arose out of classical thinking in Rome and Greece and was based on the importance of the overall human experience.

The gallery currently has three exhibitions on view: a group show by the women artists from Studio 44, an artist run studio space in Sweden; “Making Power” by artist Joan Ryan; and “Destroy Edit Transform” by Andrea Burgay. In order to home these three exhibitions within its long and narrow storefront space, the gallery is divided into three tiny rooms. By presenting artworks that span several mediums including video, painting, and sculpture, the gallery exhibition space evolves somewhat haphazardly to become a charming, but cluttered and disorganized space. To be honest, the space is not large enough to show three different exhibitions, which made me feel overwhelming when I visited the gallery.

I visited a small gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina called the Shain Gallery. The exhibition that is currently on display is by the artist Arless Day. The exhibition consists of painted mixed media on canvas (some had frames) and paint on canvas (no frames, on the floor, and leaning on the partitioned walls). My focus during my visit to the Shain Gallery was on the signage, layout and spacing, lighting, and distractions.

In this museum, we will be showing you artwork throughout history that all shares a similar theme in all of them. All of the art pieces in this museum all involve nature and seascapes, many artists throughout history have drawn nature and the ocean that is around them or beautiful place that they made up, but many of these beautiful landscapes were made with no specific theme in mind except beauty, many of these painting are supposed to depict beauty in the eye of the beholder, but many of these painting may still seem dark and gloomy.

Whether pride, fear, or peace, art is intended to make the viewer feel an emotion. The visit to the St. Louis Art Museum had me excited to discover a new revelation. Being the second time that I had visited in two semesters, I was looking forward to a new angle to take, writing about some of my favorite pieces I was unable to include in my last paper. This semester we have been focusing on the Renaissance era (1300-1700), also known as the Rebirth. During this time, scholars and artists looked back towards the classical learning. The Renaissance was a very memorable period for the European civilization. This period dates back to the early 1300’s and lasted for hundreds of years. During this period, many things were invented and innovated, so many often define the term as a period of “rebirth”. In all actuality, The Renaissance is a period of rebirth, but many leave out the significance of the two principals that shapes its meaning. The two principles that shaped the styles created during this period includes the classical forms of the Greek and Romans, and the interest of humanism and the importance of the individual.

They advanced immensely in the aspect of natural art, human and nature. In this era they discovered the beauty of naked art that shows the raw, vulnerable, perfection of a human man ("Renaissance Art." History.com.) Artists were inspired by the Ancient Greek and Roman society. Nevertheless most of the art was displayed in the church, and showed sacraments that were celebrated. The Renaissance, a time period painted over like a great canvas with the names of legendary artists. People in the modern world know mostly the great names like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, etc. These names have become ingrained in culture, so much so that the names have taken on a new persona of four animated turtles. But like any time period these names barely scratch the surface of a cornerstone in the history of art. Beginning in the 13th century, known as the Early Renaissance, the focus of art started to shift from a heavenly perspective down to a more human perspective. Sciences grew, knowledge of the human body expanded, and in turn this helped shape artistic trends like they were clay on a potter’s wheel. Great

The renaissance or “rebirth” was a cultural awakening which spanned from the fourteenth to sixteenth century. A growing interest in humanist traits and classical ideas heavily influenced the art during the renaissance. A growing community of artists provided much needed competition for their profession. The renaissance introduced many different and modern ideas but also remained obedient to classical belief. The unique art of the renaissance spread throughout Europe. Northern European art differed tremendously from Italian art.

During the shift from the middle ages into the Renaissance period new conceptions of the individual and the human mind quickly came to light. Although art in the Middle Ages was centered predominantly on religion and faith, the incoming art of the Renaissance underwent a drastic change. A vast amount of these changes mainly focused on individualism, secularism, and humanism. Following the collapse of the feudal system, thoughts of individualism quickly rose when people realized that they didn’t have to adhere to a specific group.Throughout the beginning of the Renaissance, religious figures and the Catholic Church began to lose authority which conducted in new ideas of secularism. Comparably, humanistic art and notions became preeminent when individuals focused on glorifying the human body, learning more about it and inclined more towards realistic art.

Beginning roughly around the year 1400 an era in Europe began; one that would shape the ideas and the lives of men. This era of rebirth or renaissance came within the fifteenth century through the revival of classical texts. One central effect of the Renaissance was the production of a new intellectual idea: humanism. Humanism being defined as a, “[t]erm invented in the 19th century. . . [regarding] developments relating to the revival of Classical literature and learning in European culture from roughly 1300 to 1600” left its mark on all of Europe leaving nothing untouched not even the artist.
