One of the first traditions that took people in was the Derby fever. Derby fever was when people would get excited in the early parts of the year for the Kentucky Derby. Derby fever was not just in the United States it was heard of everywhere and still is. Derby fever was mostly led to because the Kentucky Derby was thought of as a celebration of spring. The Derby has always been known for its brightly colored vicinity, with the flowers and the horses. (Doolittle pg 24)

The drink is called the Mint Julep. Those who have had it describe it as “Cool as Kentucky. Fresh as a Spring.” The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Over 120,000 Mint Juleps are sold and consumed during the time of people enter and finally leave the Kentucky Derby. During the duration of the event, the 120,000 Mint Juleps requires ingredients by the thousands. A minimum of ten thousand bottles of Old Forester Mint Julep are opened and put into the mixed drink. Added to the Old Forester Mint Juleps, are over a thousand pounds of mint, to add add an emphasis on the mint.
