Introduction Many people, especially Christians know of the book of John for its famous verse found in chapter 3 verse 16, “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (NIB, Pg.1912). But there is far more to the fourth Gospel that gives us an in depth culture of people known as the Johannine Community. Thesis In order to better understand the Fourth Gospel in the Holy Scriptures, I am going to first give a brief description of the authorship, setting, and date in which this was said to have been written. Second, I will explain the purpose or context in which this gospel was written. Third, I will discuss key verses and passages that tell us more in depth about Jesus. Last and finally, I will my own questions, thoughts, and observation of the Gospel of John. Last and finally. Background When discussing the time period in which this piece was actually written, it is important to understand that it was written before the epistles. According to many scholars such as Charles H. Talbert, the book of John was written either after or around the same time as the letters 1, 2, 3 of John (Talbert, pg.4). According to Talbert, the text cannot be dated much later than 100 AD. There are fragments from Chapter 18:31-33 that seem to be dated back to as early as second century, or 125 AD (Talbert, Pg. 1917).
