It also went to show that the use of marijuana didn't lead to morphine, heroin or cocaine addiction. It proved that no effort is made to create a market for those narcotics by stimulating the practice of marijuana smoking. Finally,it showed that the publicity concerning the catastrophic effects of marihuana smoking in the United States is unfounded. In 1972, a Congressionally created commission called the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse, whose members were appointed by then-President Richard Nixon, completed one of the most comprehensive reviews ever undertaken regarding marijuana and public policy. Their report, "Marihuana: A Signal of Misunderstanding," proclaimed that "from what is now known about the effects of marihuana, its use at the present level does not constitute a major threat to public health," and recommended Congress and state legislatures decriminalize the use and casual distribution of marijuana for personal
"Marijuana is the second most popular drug after alcohol in the country today. So many people smoke marijuana that the numbers alone seem to legitimize and condone its presence in people's lives. Yet, even in moderation marijuana is not 'safe.' Somehow this information had not filtered down to people who think they are smoking a fairly innocuous drug. Our society perpetuates the myths about pot being a fun, harmless, recreational drug. These myths feed into people's denial of marijuana's problems" (Baum 6). However, the abuse of marijuana is a problem. It is not only a personal problem, but also more importantly a social problem. Throughout history marijuana has been used to serve various purposes in many
Human beings have many fears ranging from the unique to the common fears of many man. There is steadily increase in people having fear of sharks as written in Sharks and People: Exploring Our Relationship with the Most Feared Fish in the Sea by Thomas P. Peschak, “The technical term for the fear of sharks is selachophobia or galeophobia. Studies by psychologists show that we are not born with fear of sharks or any other living creature, but that these fears are acquired during early childhood through the display of emotions of people in our immediate surroundings. In addition to these terrifying real-life events, the publication of the book Jaws by Peter Benchley in 1974 and the release of the Spielberg film in 1975 fanned the flames
Even though Dr. Seuss was voted “least likely to succeed” (“Grahame-Smith” 14) in college he quickly proved everyone wrong. He was widely known for his great books written for children. “Many of his books were initially composed of his sketches”(“Dr. Seuss” St. James). Dr. Seuss successfully wrote and illustrated sixty books for children (“Dr. Seuss” Biography). Dr. Seuss was able to impact the lives of many people with his constant hard work and creativity.
The use of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana within America throughout the twenty and twenty-first century has been heavily disputed within our own government as well as shaped many of our leaders lives. Even currently, the argument for legalized marijuana is heavily debated and brought to the American public eye through vast media sources. The health risks involved in partaking of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol can be very consequential, or not at all. Many current political acts, such as Colorado legalizing recreational marijuana, have brought the eligibility of past studies on the health risks of marijuana to the surface as well as the health factors involved with other legal substances. This act followed by many other states has forced the government to reevaluate their stances on the legality of mind altering substances.
As the Governor of New York marijuana would be legalized for recreational use for various reasons. According to Anslinger and Cooper (1937), Marijuana derivative of the Indian hemp plant called Cannabis sativa. It was used as a medication to cure depression, hysteria, insanity, and mental retardation (Anslinger & Cooper, 1937). Then during the 1800 's the drug was used for other purposes but because it could not be injected it became ineffective (Anslinger & Cooper, 1937). Later on in the 1920 's, it was perceived by people in power that marijuana was a minority drug (Anslinger & Cooper, 1937). The dangers of marijuana were vigorously exaggerated to discourage new users and persuade current users to cease using the drug (Sifaneck et al., 2015). This was a prevention strategy that was used to scare youth away from using the drug (Sifaneck et al., 2015). Anslinger (2009, as cited in Anslinger & Cooper, 1937) indicated that among young people, crimes such as robberies, murders, suicides, and burglary was the results of marijuana use. This statement was very untrue, and marijuana can be very
Is cannabis dangerous? This particular issue has been discussed, contemplated, and argued in several settings throughout our country’s history, but it is a particularly prominent issue in today’s society. Many individuals have their own opinions on marijuana, whether it be positive or negative, but an objective perspective is necessary to justly weigh the benefits and detriments of marijuana use and legalization. When an unbiased person analyzes the controversial topic of cannabis, he or she would realize that the substance does not plainly fall into a single category. There is ample, scientific proof that marijuana has numerous medicinal purposes, such as treating glaucoma and different seizure disorders. However, there is equivalent
This discussion is not new. Cannabis. Pot. Grass. Mary Jane. 420. Ganga. Herb. Joint. Blunt. Skunk. Marijuana. Weed. With over two dozen different names, call it whatever you fancy. The battle for legalization throughout the United States continues to be a controversial topic. As more states choose to legalize weed, more medical research in the United States is beginning to unfold. Although the views of marijuana as a deviant drug are changings rapidly, our medical research on marijuana is still lagging due to the lasting legacies of anti-weed drug policies and misinformation about what Cannabis does to the body. In 2013, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, made a documentary entitled
The topic of legalizing marijuana has been a topic of controversy for quite some time now not only throughout our local streets, but throughout the local and into the state government. The legalization of marijuana is such a controversial topic because some are for it and some are against it. People are for the legalization because of the great uses it has towards medicine, the money that could come from the taxation of legalized marijuana, and the emptying of prisons because of the releases of marijuana offenses. The list could go on and on. Other people are against the legalization because it is considered a “gateway drug”, or because the legalization of marijuana would eventually
Marijuana has been used for thousands of years to treat many conditions and has never caused a single human death. The 1999 institute of medicine proved that it did not in any part reach the legal definition of a schedule 1 drug the US law put it under. The institute of medicine established that marijuana has positive medical benefits in a variation of illnesses and has a lower chance for drug abuse than alcohol and tobacco which have a higher rate of being a gateway drug used by minors. In 1988 the Drug enforcement administration also started to investigate the medical uses of marijuana. As a result the DEA discovered that there are positive medical uses for marijuana and was uncovered to be “one of the safest substances known to man” DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis Young said during a two year hearing on marijuana for medical use. Soon after the facts about the acceptable medical uses of marijuana were noted it started to attention publicly, increasing its popularity and supporters quickly.
Since the legalization of marijuana for medical use, eight out of ten states caused a decreased in teenage cannabis use. Currently in the nation there are several states that allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Government officials have different belief on medical marijuana. According to Judge Young, “Marijuana has been accepted as capable of relieving the distress of great numbers of very ill people” (“Top Ten”). The governmental figure sees potential with the use of medical cannabis. According to Walters, “Smoked marijuana damages the brain, heart, lungs, and immune system” (“Top Ten”). Walters is suggesting that this study is only going to do harm. Though there are many people who agree and disagree with cannabis use for
New York Academy of Medicine put out a broad research report in 1944 announcing that, contrary to earlier research and widespread belief, many ideas concerning marijuana usage the problems surrounding marijuana were exaggerated or fallacious. The studies showed marijuana did not induce violence behavior, insanity, committing of sex crimes, or lead to addiction or another drug use. (“Historical Timeline- Medical Marijuana”; “Marijuana Timeline”).
All hard drugs should not be legalized in the United States. Some people would argue that drugs like marijuana, have medical benefits and cause no real physical harm. What these individuals have not considered is the long-term health effects. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse “Marijuana” article, “Other health effects of the use of marijuana include: breathing problems, increased heart rate, and problems with child development during and after pregnancy.” Therefore, the legalization of these drugs would just increase the amount of drug related health problems. In addition to the health issues, crime is another major concern in the controversial topic of drug legalization. The Drug Enforcement Administration has released reports
The law of marijuana has grown rapidly throughout the last couple years. Marijuana has been approved by 27 states, but now United States of America is rethinking its view. Due to the immediate effects such as rapid heart beat, disorientations, lack of physical coordination, often followed by depression or sleepiness. According to international statistics, over 94 million people in the US have admitted using it at least once. In this paper, I will discuss my thoughts and opinions on the documentary, five things I learned from it, and lastly if I still believe marijuana should be legal or illegal in the United States.
Recreational use of marijuana is already permitted in a handful of states, and can be medically prescribed in over half the states of the US, though it remains illegal under federal law. News reports on the issue suggest some voters are concerned that the decriminalization of marijuana will have adverse effects on the US crime rate. Opponents to the legalization of marijuana often claim that people who use marijuana are more likely to move on to harder drugs and those users commit crimes to pay for their habit. Additionally, they are concerned that marijuana dispensaries are attractive targets for criminals and that marijuana use encourages alcohol abuse, and that stoned drivers are a danger to the public. That being said,
The death penalty is a humane method of giving punishment to people who are savage killers. Capital punishment is lawful, dissuades ferocious wrongdoings, and is a fair punishment in the enormous majority of death row circumstances. Furthermore, capital punishment was reinstated by the U.S Supreme Court in 1976, and since then, more than 1,420 prisoners have been executed. In addition, lethal injection is the most common form of execution in the United States, which is a series of injections of three drugs that cause an overdose that is fatal to the prisoner. Although rarely used, other methods of execution are electrocution, death by firing squad, and hanging. However, there are some who believe that there are too many people who are punished for crimes that they did not commit; and that capital punishment is unconstitutional, inhumane, and is not effective at preventing crime. Furthermore, lethal injection is one of the most humane and common methods of execution in the United States.
