In the late 1800’s and 1900’s as the workforce was growing, so were concerns among the people. Working conditions were dangerous and people had to work for many hours. Wages were low and sometimes children were forced into these hostile environments. People wanted these things to stop. They were finding ways to fight against these conditions and change them for the better. Organizations were popping up to make these changes but they all had varying ideas of what to change and how to do it. Some of these degrees varied from the time and place that the groups were created in. There were several prominent groups in the labor movement. There were the Socialists, the Knights of Labor, and the American Federation of Labor (AFL) to name a few. …show more content…

All of the leaders wanted better hours, working conditions, and wages, but other goals varied. Terrence Powderly wanted to push the country in a utopian direction. In document D, the National Labor Tribune wrote,” The objects included education, the bettering of the material condition of the member by means such a as schemes as cooperation…” These goals can be used to effectively construct a utopian society. But, as mentioned earlier, Gompers didn’t agree with this. He was focused on industrialization. He found it to be more practical to focus on concrete economic gains instead of utopian ideas. Gompers also wanted to solve problems as they arose and improve the quality of life for the AFL members. In document C, Adolph Strasser, a founder of the AFL said, “…we want to dress better and to live better, and become better off and better citizens generally.” With the industrial revolution on the horizon at this point, it was more rational to focus on trying to better concrete ideas that would be very significant in the future instead of utopian ideas. But Gompers didn’t only disagree with this, he disagreed with Eugene Debs and the Socialists as well. Eugene Debs was a committed Socialist. Debs wanted socialism to thrive, he wanted to replace capitalism with Socialism. Every one would work for the government and the workers would lead the country.
