Alejandro Mendoza - Pena. HIST 2020-005 Last Stand “Last Stand” by Michael Punke follows the decline of the American Buffalo and the movement that was born to protect it from extinction.1 It follows George Bird Grinnell and the significant role he played in helping create the preservation of the bison. While the book goes into detail on this movement, it also goes into detail on what caused it. It explains that it was mostly overhunting and greed that threatened the buffalo. “The American Yawp” by Joseph Locke and Ben Wright goes into detail about America’s history throughout the years.2 Specifically, chapter 17, titled “The West,” talks about westward migrations, the Indian wars, and federal peace policies.
Maybe this would open the eyes about the war in Iraq, even if you ask people on the street they usually say that the war was wrong. It really surprised me that he won the next election, at maybe he shouldn't have, and he actually cheated like the movie says he does. A lot of these clips that Michael shows in his movie, had been shown in the news and I recognized some of them, and you have to admit that Bushes behavior has been very weird. Even though some people say that this is propaganda, all lies and is stupid just doesn't want to see the facts. A lot of these things are true, and can anyone actually stand up and tell me why a war where hundreds of thousand people have died? Was it to force democracy down on a middle eastern country, how
A war that is justified is still a war, and no one wants to be in that kind of hell. The idea that the only way to win is to be the best at killing people so you can stop killing people and go home, is a way to survive. However, the rules keep changing and you are still there,
The experiences that you face not only shape you for the time being but for the rest of your life. In chapter 8 “April 1996, Memphis, Tennessee” in the book The Terrorist’s Son by Zak Ebrahim with Jeff Giles, published in 2014 by TED books, Ebrahim talks a lot about his choice of not following the path that was expected of him. He chose to be a better person than what his father was. He uses his experiences, location, and details to show the audience an inside view of his world.
In 2001, an event occurred in the United States of America that was life-changing for every American. On September 11, America had been severely attacked by terrorists, leaving behind traumatic memories for many and led to the country having to take initiative. At the time, George W. Bush was president, and he had to take action to this event in which was defining his presidency. Nine days after the attack, Bush gave an address to a joint session of Congress and to the nation. This dramatic address struck home with America, raising confidence and giving hope to the people. One may wonder, how exactly was Bush able to accomplish such a historical address? The usage of various rhetorical devices are present in his speech, allowing him to craft a powerful speech and connect with his audience. Bush establishes Cicero’s five canons of rhetoric throughout his 9/11 speech by achieving each individual requirement differently to present an address in order to adequately address the attack and give America a plan of action.
Why does the world need to kill two million men just because two countries can’t agree with each other? War is devastating to countries and most indefinitely to individuals and soldiers. A war can ruin families, friendships, education, economy, and the minds of innocent people. Most young men, who were just approaching manhood, were pulled of their innocence of childhood, and thrown into a world of rage and destruction. Soldiers that luckily survive a horrific war often find their lives turned completely upside down since they enlisted, and sometimes it is just impossible to forget the vicious past and start over again as a civilian. Many older men believe that wars being fought are wars of dignity and glory, but truthfully, wars are
On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks were directed for the United States by means of four hijacked planes. Two of which hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center, one hit the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense, and the fourth crashed in a field near Pittsburg after it was meant to hit the White House. The terror spread in the United States and brought concern and fear to the citizens. The impact of these terrorist attacks caused serious and detrimental damages within the country, and their result on the people were enormous; insecurity, helplessness, and susceptibility spread. Especially after the release of a videotape in which Osama Bin Laden, head of Al-Qaeda, admitted that he was responsible for the terrorist attacks. Hence, President George W, Bush declared the “war on terror” against all terrorists in the Arab world, specifically Afghanistan and Iraq. In the following paper, we will be discussing how the war on terror was waged, its effects on the target countries, and how it was perceived by political thinkers, where some saw it as a conspiracy theory against the Arab countries, and others believed the USA was the victim.
One cannot listen to the news or commentaries without hearing a controversial story that will cause you to pause and emit an "ahem sigh". In view of the recent tragedies around the world that affect America and Americans, one might reach a point of bewilderment and become reluctant to watch or listen to the news, however; if you are enrolled in a political science class, it is necessary to involve yourself in current events. The questionable killing of an American citizen was a forerunner event that caused discussion and debate. His name was Anwar-al-Awlaki who was killed in Yemen.
Security measures drastically increased after 9/11. 9/11 was an act of terrorism that would change the way the country handled privacy. Americans needed to voice their opinions after this happened and have their own rights protected. The need to protect individual rights is the utmost important aspect in a thriving U.S. society.
On September 11, 2015 the greatest act of terror known was committed at the World Trade Center, as well as the Pentagon. The terrorist group known as al-Quaeda coordinated an attack by hijacking U.S. commercial flights and sending two planes into the World Trade Center and another into the Pentagon. Luckily, a fourth flight was retaken by the passengers and could not reach its target, yet sadly it crashed in a Pennsylvanian valley. This event broke the hearts of American citizens and citizens worldwide, and the actions coming after wards would have a huge impact on America.
“Muslims, Bin Laden argues, must reverse a series of humiliations that they’ve endured since the Ottoman Empire, the last Muslim great power, was dismantled after World War I. Al-Qaeda’s 1998 declaration of a jihad, or holy war, against ‘Jews and Crusaders’ urges Muslims to attack ‘the Americans and their allies, civilian and military,’ supposedly as a response to U.S. policies that al-Qaeda feels oppress Muslims: the stationing of troops in Saudi Arabia; the backing of U.N. sanctions against Iraq; support for repressive Arab regimes; support for Israel; alleged complicity in Russian attacks on Muslims in Chechnya; and interventions in Bosnia, Somalia, and other Muslim regions that bin Laden sees as attempts to spread America’s empire. These Western policies, according to al-Qaeda, add up to a ‘clear
Walter Laqueur’s book, “The New Terrorism: Fanaticism and the Arms of Mass Destruction”, is empowering readers with the entire spectrum of terrorism. The reasons behind terrorism are not easy to understand, but Laqueur goes into great detail to try and bring the reader to an understanding of what the terrorist is thinking in order to justify the means to the end.
Persistence is a firm continuance in course of action despite difficulty or opposition. In the world of entrepreneurship and business you can't be weak even if you fail a couple of times. Janelle Shanise James is the embodiment of this strength and ideology. She prides herself as a mother, beauty lover, rule breaker, and truth seeker. Make-up has always been Janelle’s passion throughout life, but, up until a few years ago, she had always discounted it as something that girls just play around with. Although most business owners can look back to a time in their childhood where they were selling postcards or making a few dollars wiping windows - Janelle admits that she hadn’t been grooming herself for self-employment at a young age. She began
Do you ever have one of those moments in your life in which you will never forget where you were? I remember waking up early on September 11, 2001, getting ready for school and my dad telling me hurry up to watch the news with him. Being in 8th grade at the time, the news really wasn’t something I would watch in the mornings so I knew it had to be something important. Then I saw it. An airplane crashing into a tower, people panicking, and mayhem ensuing in a city very well known to me. When any tragic event like 9/11 occurs, the effect it will have on a nation is tremendous. It left America in shock, anger, and sadness just to name a few adjectives to describe the insurmountable amount of feelings that we felt on that day.
My professional and personal goal is to achieve a bachelor degree in healthcare. Being the best person I can be, and setting goals that I can achieve is my motivation. Setting an example for my daughter to dream big, set high goals, and hard work will pay off in the end. I will also be the first person in my immediate family to receive a degree. Growing up getting an education beyond high school wasn’t really pushed or encourage by my parents. Long-term this degree will set me up for a professional career that I can retire in. Also I can be an example to young adults to set a goal and stick to it no matter what. With faith and perseverance you can achieve anything you set your mind to do. I want to be able to support my family better, and be a help to society. In my previous educational endeavors, which was 10 years ago. I became unfocused on my goals. I got married while in college and started a fulltime job. I am still married today to my husband of 11 years now, and we have a 5year old daughter. I’m in a different place in my life right now.
