We are a nation of laws because having laws helps keep things in order and protects our people. They keep us and our rights safe against other people, organizations, and the government. We also have laws that protect our rights as citizens, and which include things like: “Laws that come from the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution, that guarantee our basic freedoms like freedom of speech, religion, and the press. Laws that protect us from discrimination because of our race, gender, age, or because of a disability” (Law and the Rule of Law). Having laws affects our civil freedoms because some laws have to violate our rights in order for them to take effect. We choose to have law enforcement agencies enforce our laws because we need somebody to keep things in check. Law enforcement agencies are what keeps citizens civilized. If it weren’t for law enforcement agencies, then everyone would feel entitled to act as they wish, in which most cases leads to violence to resolve a conflict they may have with another person. However, having law enforcement agencies enforce our laws affects our civil freedoms because they sometimes have the right to go against our civil liberties if they have reason to do so. “Media bias” portrays police officers as the bad guys and all people that they come across are victims. Most of the time news stories about police are negative. Because the news tends to cover negative events the most, you only hear about the “bad guys” in law enforcement rather than those who are doing their job well. In the Trayvon Martin case, neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, fatally shot Trayvon Martin out of what he claims to be self-defense. Zimmerman spotted Martin walking around the neighborhood and called it in as suspicious behavior because he did not recognize Martin. When he approached Martin, an altercation took place in which we do not know the full details to. When this story came out, and people became aware of this event, a lot of the public wanted to believe that because Martin was an unarmed minor, Zimmerman is at fault. However, because we do not
