I believe that the leader of any group of people should think positively because as a follower, you always look up to the leader. More importantly, followers look up to their leader for advice and guidance when things become unpromising. If the leader stays hopeful then so does the group. On the other hand, if the leader is pessimistic in bleak situations, then the group loses its self-confidence and optimism. Furthermore, in the following setting, Ralph had the group make a fire on the island so they could signal a ship. The reason he wants to signal a ship that is passing by is because he wants to alert that ship about their existence on the island where their plane had crashed on. However, that plan fails because the fire did not produce
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.” Abraham Lincoln. Once you give a man power, it all goes downhill from there. In The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there is one group of boys on an island. The boys elect one chief, Ralph, but another bigun thinks he’s a better chief. So the other boy, Jack, leaves and forms a new tribe with most of the boys. After a little bit of time, the groups begin to fight resulting in a couple of tragic deaths. Why would people follow a corrupt leader like Jack? They follow them because they feel like the new leader can help them better than the old one; they think that the leader or ruler can provide for them and it doesn’t matter who that leader is, they will follow them because there’s no one else to follow.

In society, there are often people who acquire strong leadership qualities and understand what it means to be a favorable leader. Other times, there are people who have strong qualities to lead, but they do not understand how to be a favorable leader and create a safe and comfortable environment for those following them. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the characters of Ralph and Jack arise as two different leaders who bear strong characteristics and they both seek power on the island. The boys become leaders in their own ways, creating individual environments that prioritize different matters, all while trying to work towards their rescue off the island.
Over time there have been many leaders of countries, groups and societies that are believed to be the “best” or what someone could only dream of. However what if a perfect leader doesn’t exist? In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies Ralph’s sense of leadership declines throughout the novel. So what if he doesn’t actually possess the skills the boys had hoped he for.
The first chapter of the novel, The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding is effective in establishing the characters, concerns and language for the remainder of the book, as well as introducing the main themes of the novel; that the problems in society are related to the sinful nature of man and good verses evil. In Golding’s first chapter, the main characters are introduced, we see many ominous signs of what’s to come through the authors choice of language and the beginning of rivalries, issues and concerns are portrayed which are to continue throughout the rest of the book. The microcosm on the Island is presented from an early stage, as well as themes that emerge and remain important throughout
Symbol of Sin In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, the use of a torturous scaffold symbolizes sin and redemption. In Hawthorne’s novel, the afflicting scaffold is present in three scenes throughout the story. The first scene occurs during the introduction of the novel, where Hester Prynne is given time on the structure in return for her sinful crime of adultery.
A true hero is not the one in the spotlight afraid of what the people will think about his actions a true hero stands and proclaims for what is right although people may despise him for his/her actions. The heros of real life are usually the one that people think are considered over the top and usually end up being ignored while people agree with a person who says the same thing but only slightly less over the top. William Golding saw this and have incorporated into his novel Lord of the Flies. Due to the recurring pattern of the hero being the protagonist people automatically assumes the protagonist to be the hero, although he/she may not be the hero, but rather a support character as shown in the novel Lord of the Flies.
I plan on furthering and pursuing my craft of storytelling at USC. I look forward to collaborating with other creative minds as I do at my current college. At Diablo Valley College I am apart of the DVC film club and a member of the film production community. They are like my family and I plan on meeting and forming a new family filmmakers at USC to grow with. Along with meeting new collaborators, I also have multiple friends that live in the Los Angeles area that are in the film and music industry. I plan on working with them as well and combining the two communities of friends. I am certainly going to push myself to leave my comfort zone right away and not hold back. I am a strong believer in the idea that being in uncomfortable situations
William Golding was born in Newquay, Cornwall. He went to school where his father worked as a teacher, at Marlborough Grammar School. He was going to study science in college, but later decided to switch to English. In nineteen thirty four, he published ‘Poems,’ his first published works. In nineteen thirty nine, he got married and had kids. He worked as a teacher a little, then joined the Navy. Eventually, he left the Navy and went back to teaching. He wrote Lord of the Flies in nineteen fifty three, and the publishing of this book caused him to quit teaching and work full time as an author.
The author William golding starts out when their is a plane crash that lands on the island where Ralph, Jack and the other boys are located. Ralph blows the conch signaling for a meeting asking the other kids what choices they should vote on that Ralph had picked, But shortly after the meeting Ralph sets a signal for help just like a good leader would do. Shortly after the meeting”s from talking about they need shelters. The next morning they are still on the island , so Ralph blows the conch again to call for another meeting. Eventually Ralph and Jack start fighting each other over the conch. The whole group has enough problems though with a beast being
People who have natural leadership characteristics and charisma, others admire and follow, regardless of if they agree with this persons decisions, or have different ideas themselves. The boys looked up to Ralph from the moment he “[blows] the conch to discover how many children have escaped death in the plane crash”(Rosenfield 1). “Ralph is the natural leader by virtue of his superior height, his superior strength, his superior beauty,” (Rosenfield 1) which causes the boys to immediately vote him as ‘chief’(Golding 23). Ralph assigns jobs to each of the boys creating a society for them to function in while they wait and hope to be rescued (Golding 23). He is smart and knows how to handle situations in the group. In particular, he keeps Jack, a boy who is jealous of him, happy by making him leader of the hunters because “bullies want power, so sometimes the leader will give it to them” (Brand and Smith 19) to avoid
In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of young boys were stranded on a deserted tropical island. They were all extremely scared and did not know if they were going to be able to survive. A boy named Ralph called a meeting with the boys so that they could vote for a chief. It was between Ralph and a boy named Jack; Ralph ended up winning. Two boys named Piggy and Simon were the wise and respectful boys on the island. Although Piggy was the smartest boy, Ralph was definitely the best leader.
William Golding was born on September 19th 1911 in Cornwall, England. As a child he had an interest in literature but his parents wanted him to learn about natural sciences and he did so until his second year at Oxford when he changed his major to English literature. After college he worked as a teacher, director, theater actor, and wrote poetry. He also entered into the Navy during World War II. The Navy gave him insight to the evils of the world he lived in. When he left the Navy, he began writing novels and teaching again.
The question has been asked whether or not the true nature of humans are good or bad. Throughout the novel of Lord of the Flies, we have many examples on what the nature of humankind is. Two characters named Jack and Roger, according to the Freudian theory, have reverted to their ID. Within the past fifty years, there have been two major events that have dictated whether or not humans are bad. Fifty years ago, we were in the midst of the Vietnam War and 14 years ago the attack on the twin towers and the pentagon happened. Due to what I have read in the novel and the actions of humans during these two events, I have concluded that humans are inherently bad.
The characteristics of gothic literature come to include those of cheerless, tormented characters, dark, gloomy, mood and tone, complex and dramatic language, multiple narrators, plot lines, symbols, and themes, and supernatural events that defy logic, including ghosts and monsters. Many, if not all, of these characteristics are shown in The Fall of the House of Usher. The House of Usher itself is deteriorating, and clearly has signs of falling apart. The narrator, before entering the house, claims of seeing “the discoloration of ages had been great. Minute fungi spread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves.”
